While not as in-depth I believe as Frank's "Downfall", Allen & Polmar do a great job at explaining the overall plan to invade Japan, its history, the forces on both sides, and the realities facing President Truman on the decision to drop the bomb. The only I'll say gripe is the occasional very random facts drop in that don't have much to do with the story (PT-109 comes to mind). But overall, if you didn't know anything about the Operation Downfall, this is the book for you too get started!
