Just finished my second read through of Wolves and I loved it even more than the first time. There’s a reason that The Dark Tower series has such a loyal following. I’m already looking forward to my next journey.

Soooo... The sci-fi element was both exciting and weird and out of place haha.

The robot shutdown was a tad sad.

The wolves were a LOT.

This one was too long with a lot of meandering western feel and could have easily had some repeat passages shut down.

The time lost was interesting, and Susannah's pregnancy was weird as crap, but a good addition to the series.

Lots of good content to add to the dark tower, especially the numerology and the extra doors. Eddie shined the most in this one.

3.5 rounded up to 4 Stars.

One of King's best! Another great installment of The Dark Tower Series. King continues to create fabulously detailed worlds and then lets us bounce in and out of them as we visit other times and places. In this case, Roland and his Ka-tet come upon an old western town that's cursed with a band of marauding "wolves" who sweep in every twenty years or so and take many of the town's children away. The kids do come back after only a few weeks, but they're ruined. Big and dumb and stupid. They don't live very long either. One man in the town decides to stand up to the wolves, but he needs the aid of some real gunslingers. The town sends a group to scout out some new folks who are coming their way. The newcomers certainly seem to have the weapons and the attitudes to do the job. Just as amazingly the group that goes to meet them includes none other than Father Calahan, now relocated in place and time from the town of Salem's Lot.

This story stands on its own in many ways but also ties in very nicely with the overall plot and direction of the dark tower series. There are visits back to various versions of New York, major developments for members of the Ka-tet, and the usual King insight into people and their motivation. I think it's important to have read the previous dark tower books and Salem's Lot to get the most out of this work. But in any case, its another great read and testimony to King's genius.

My 100th book of the year is done!

I'm not exactly sure why, but I enjoyed this more this time around than I did the first time.

I much prefer this narrator over Frank Muller. (At this end of this audio book, King himself speaks about Frank Muller and why he didn't continue narrating this series-it was due to a motorcycle accident in which he was seriously injured.

(Frank is part of the reason The Haven Foundation was created. It's to help independent authors, narrators and frelancers during times of catastrophe. ) To find out more, please click here: http://www.thehavenfdn.org/

I was sorry to hear about what happened, but I'm glad to have George Guidall back as narrator and I'm looking forward to listening to the next book.

«No one ever does live happily ever after, but we leave the children to find that out for themselves.»

For decades, the Wolves have come from Thunderclap to take children from Calla Bryn Sturgis, and then return them roont. After 23 quiet years, they're coming back again, and the folken, knowing that a ka-tet of gunslingers is close to their town, ask them for help.

As The Dark Tower series moves forward, it gets more complex and more epic, and after the emotionally devastating n  Wizard and Glassn, I had my doubts about this book because I was afraid it wouldn't top it, but it actually exceeded my expectations.

Wolves of the Calla was delightful to read. It had more character and world development than any of the previous installments, and similarly to them, it was a slow-burner that kept me hooked and interested in the story, in great part because of the characters.
They've all grown up a lot since the earlier books, and I've been getting more and more attached to them. I've been suspicious about Susannah being pregnant since n  The Waste Landsn, and now I know I'm right, and she might even be in danger. Don't kid with my feelings, King! Don't you dare!

Anyways, I LOVED to see Father Callahan again, to know more about what happened to him after the events in Salem's Lot, and I feel he'll have a great importance in the next books. There were a lot of connections to other King's works, but I feel Callahan was the definitely the most impactful. Hell, he was the major character of this book, and I just loved that!
King also explored some of the people from Calla Bryn Sturgis, and I created bonds with them, like Ben and Andy (a robot!).

Obviously, there was the mystery around the Wolves and why they did what they did, and that was so damn intriguing! And the things about the Sombra Corporation, the Black Thirteen, the travels between worlds - all of that was stunning. King's world-building capacities were on top.

Once again, shit hits the fan, and the last 150 pages were incredibly crazy, fast-paced, mind-blowing and had all the badassery!! I just adored the Sisters of Oriza, their abilities to throw the dishes, and I loved to see Susannah with them - so freaking awesome! And that cliff-hanger! Ugh, King, don't you mess up with my feelings 'cause you hurt me, but I love you.

What else can I say? Wolves of the Calla is, along with n  Wizard and Glassn, my favorite novel of the series so far. I feel infinite love for it.

Čitajući poslednjih nekoliko stranica, moja reakcija bi se mogla opisati rečima Dete Voker: "BEMTIMATER! BEMTIMATER BELU!"

This book had promise but it didnt hold me like 1-4. I enjoyed Father Callahan ( Always!) and enjoyed some of the action regarding the Wolves. This is where the series for me took a hit.

RE-READ 3/13/23.
I don't know what I was thinking when I first read this but I don't agree with anything I wrote above (besides loving Father Callahan) This goes from my initial 3 stars to easily 4-4.5 stars.

We are introduced to Callahan ( salem's lot fame) and this Calla (village) that gets tormented by "wolves" and kidnap 1 of every pair of twins in the town. Most parents in this town bare twins with singles being the rarity here. We find out that the wolves serve the Crimson King and that use the twin mental powers as food for their beam breakers. The wolves are cool Dr. Doom substitutes equipped with light sabers and harry potter sneetches. Intense action the last 10 percent of this book. Love the Women of Oriza too.
We also see Black 13 in action and head back to NY with Eddie trying to protect Calvin Tower for Balazar ( same Balanzar from DT 2) who works for Sombra Corporation which we also dive into a little bit more with Callahan's story and type 3 vampires and Low men.

Susannah is fighting off Internal Mia and her chap. Things get meta at the end when Our ka-tet goes through one of Calvins books and finds "salems Lot" written by a Stephen king.

Great story!

Ου λα λα two more to go !!!

Storytelling is more than just an art form. Throughout the ages, starting at the dawn of time, storytelling was a divine act, a gift from God. It says so in the first line of the Bible: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” Indeed, God’s storytelling led to the Creation, or so it is written.

For those of us who fancy ourselves writers, telling stories is a very God-like act. To the religious-minded, that statement is probably sacrilegious. To be fair, it is pretty arrogant, but it’s also true. If you’ve ever written a short story or a novel, you know what I’m talking about. You’ve created a world, with people that didn’t exist before you wrote them. You’ve given them a place in that world, a beginning, a middle, and an ending. What’s more God-like than that?

Stephen King’s Dark Tower series is about, if anything, the divine act of storytelling. If it wasn’t particularly clear in the first three books of the series, it began to be articulated with more obviousness in “Wizard and Glass”, which was essentially a story within a story. Nor was it a story told simply for entertainment. Stories---good stories, at least---are almost never told simply for entertainment.

Book Five in the series, “Wolves of the Calla”, is King’s storytelling about storytelling. It is also a gleeful wink and nod to those wonderful storytellers who have gone before, as the book contains a plethora of references to other great stories. I’m not going to spoil the references by telling you what they are, but most are pretty obvious.

The most obvious one (and this isn’t really a spoiler, as an astute reader will get the reference in the book’s preface) is King’s reference to one of his own novels. Indeed, “Wolves of the Calla” is virtually a sequel to that novel, continuing the story of one of the characters of that novel with another story within a story.

And, as if the idea of God-as-Author and divine storytelling isn’t obvious enough by the end of the book, King slaps us in the face with it in the last three pages. It’s more foreshadowing than anything, but it’s a pretty good indication of where King may be leading in the last two books of the series. Then again, nothing about this series has been predictable in any way, so it all could be just a red herring.

Something tells me it’s not, though...

Wolves of the Calla (The Dark Tower #5), Stephen King

Wolves of the Calla is a fantasy novel by American writer Stephen King. It is the fifth book in his The Dark Tower series. The book continues the story of Roland Deschain, Eddie Dean, Susannah Dean, Jake Chambers, and Oy as they make their way toward the Dark Tower.

After escaping the alternate Topeka and the evil wizard Walter O'Dim and weathering the starkblast, Roland's ka-tet begin to sense they are being followed in their travels.

During this time, Eddie Dean and Jake Chambers are sent to New York, 1977, via a dream-state called todash. There they encounter Calvin Tower, a bookstore owner who gave Jake a book in The Waste Lands that proved integral to the quest for the Dark Tower.

While in todash, Eddie and Jake discover that Tower owns the vacant lot that houses the rose that is the physical manifestation of the Dark Tower previously encountered by Jake in The Waste Lands. Jake and Eddie also discover that Enrico Balazar, the crime boss that appeared in The Drawing of the Three, is attempting to coerce Tower into selling the lot to the mysterious Sombra Corporation.

If this happens, the rose (and the Dark Tower itself) will be destroyed.

Soon after, the ka-tet discover that they are being followed by citizens of the farming village of Calla Bryn Sturgis, as well as Father Callahan, who was originally introduced in 'Salem's Lot.

He and the townsfolk request the ka-tet's assistance in battling against the Wolves of Thunderclap, who come once a generation to take one child from each pair of the town's twins. (For some reason all children in the town are born as twins.)

After a few months of being away, the children are then returned "roont" (ruined) - mentally handicapped and destined to grow to enormous size and die young.

The Wolves are due to come in about a month's time, according to Andy, an amicable humanoid robot that appeared in the Calla long ago. When asked about the Wolves, Andy refuses to divulge any information without a password. Eddie also speaks with Jamie Jaffords, an elderly resident of the Calla who remembers the previous time the Wolves appeared in the Calla.
