This book was perfect for our Picnic day in our week of summer in second grade. It was fun to read, the kids loved it, and there were lots of educational spin-offs we could take from it.

Well, this is a math oriented picture book, and I can see that it might have been great if I had used it in that way. I chose to just read this as a regular story to my niece and nephew, however, because that just seemed appropriate for our moods this evening. They liked it ok, but I doubt they'll really remember it. I don't think I'll turn this one back in yet. I think I'll give this one more go with my niece, and really emphasize the math aspect of this book a little more. We'll see if she enjoys it more from that angle.

Children's. Ants move into different forms of 100, taking so long to get to the picnic that they don't get any food.

Such a wonderful math book! The book is about 100 ants who are hungrily on their way to a picnic. In order to speed up, they split up their single file line into rows of 2, 4, 5, etc. This is a great book to teach students about the idea of division without overwhelming the students. It allows students to see how many groups are made with the 100 ants, how many are in each group, and make some sense out of the numbers.

In this story, there are one hundred hungry ants that are headed to a picnic. On their way to the picnic they start off in a single file line, but that doesn’t seem to work out so one of the ants suggests that they try two rows of fifty. They also break into fours, fives, and tens, but by the time they get to the picnic all of the food is gone! This would be a great book to use when introducing division to students. It would also be a good book to get students thinking about counting and subtracting when they begin breaking down numbers into smaller groups.

Enjoyed the journey but that ending ruined the experience. It was abrupt and lacked any resolution.

If only these hungry ants had memorized their multiplication tables.

Clever way to introduce mathematics into a children's book but didn't expect the outcome!

A hey and a hi dee ho! This book was about 100 hungry ants that were all marching to a picnic because they were so hungry and looking for some “yummies” to eat. In this story, the littlest ant continuously explains to the other 99 ants that they are moving to slow so, each time they decide to divide into lines and make rows. They make lines of two, four, five, and ten. The story is funny because they make all of these lines and when they finally get to the picnic, all of the food is gone! This book would be a great book to teach and introduce the math concept of counting and dividing by ten. This book is also a great way to teach writer’s craft of repetition and rhyming. This story also provides illustrations to show the ants divided into rows. Overall, this is a very good book for reading while teaching a mathematical concept.

This children's book show the mathematical ability to represent one number in multiple ways. the story begins with one hundred hungry ants that are on a mission to get food. Along the way they stop to change their amount of rows hoping to get there sooner. This shows all the representation of 100 and in the end they took to much time trying that they didn’t make it to the food. I like the visual representations of the ant reflecting the words. I also really like the ability that you could do this as an activity along with reading it.

This was recommended for learning to count by 10, 20, 25, 50. You’d have to read it a lot to learn that, and there wasn’t a real ending to it, but it was fine.
