Well this book brings tears to my eyes. I read this to my children nearly every day when they were little. They would point to the food and put their little fingers in the holes. I would have my hand on the other side of the page and tickle the pads of their finger. They would giggle and giggle. Thank you for this wonderful story, Eric, and rest in peace.

Done reading THE VERY HUNGRY CATERPILLAR while watching the film on YouTube. I miss children story like this. Somehow, it awakens the child in me and genuinely appreciates the simple things in life. It is a fun short story of a caterpillar who never stops eating. He eats fruits and pastries until one day, he decides to hide himself into a cocoon to rest.

Forgot how wonderful this book is. With beautiful illustrations and a story all can understand, it's a favorite for my 5 yr old and my twin 2 yr olds. If you're one of those ppl that use the library often and only keep the special and unique for your own, you'll want to make this one part of your collection.

What I like most about Eric Carle’s The Very Hungry Caterpillar the first time I read this book is how inspired I was to create collage illustrations for my children’s series. How Eric’s books engage creativity. Nature. Sciences. Color. Counting. All our senses. Including a sense of humor.

There were were in my eyes and laughter too as I jouneyed with the catapillar in the greatest epic ever told.
We had much to learn from the noble catapillar.

I remembered always reading “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” when I was small and I have always loved the sweet nature of this book. I still love this book to this very day! “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” is a popular children’s book by Eric Carle and it is about how a very hungry caterpillar starts eating everything in its path. “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” is truly a cute and extraordinary book about food that children will love for many years!

Eric Carle has certainly done a great job at both illustrating and writing this book. What I really enjoyed about this book was Eric Carle’s illustrations as they are extremely colorful and cute. I love the way that Eric Carle illustrated the caterpillar having a green long body and a red head and Eric Carle also did a great job at putting a surprised expression on the caterpillar’s face when it first got out of its egg. I also love the illustrations of the caterpillar eating any food item that it comes across such as an apple and a piece of chocolate cake and you can see the cut out holes in the middle of the images of the food items indicating that the caterpillar ate through each food item. I definitely enjoyed Eric Carle’s story of the caterpillar as it details the caterpillar’s extreme hunger whenever it ate through so many food items. Eric Carle makes the story extremely cute and hilarious as the caterpillar literally eats twice its weight and I found myself laughing at the different types of food that the caterpillar ate. Many children will be awed at how much food the caterpillar, even I was surprised at how much food the caterpillar ate and I was not so surprised when the caterpillar had a stomachache, which will teach children about the importance of not overeating so much.



“The Very Hungry Caterpillar” is definitely one of those children’s books that both children and adults will enjoy for its cute humor and colorful illustrations. I would recommend this book to children ages three and up since there is nothing inappropriate in this book unless you count the caterpillar’s overeating escapade.

There are some books I’m just not smart enough to read but, darnit, I challenged myself and I finally made it through The Very Hungry Caterpillar (after several false starts)! I’m not gonna flatter myself that I unnerstood the depth of the ideas, themes and junk in it, but I liked the colours and pitchers and stuff…

Oooooh man - lookit this lil guy! He eats an apple, two pears, three plums - he’s a beast! Does he stop there? Nuh to the uh! Four strawberries and then FIVE - count it, FIVE - oranges. This unstoppable motherfucker.

And then shit gets really fucked up - all bets are off! Cake, ice cream, cherry pie, a lollipop - he is. Off. The. Chain! We’ve all been there after a trying week - no judgements lil dude! I wonder if this book is inadvertently responsible for the “health at any size/fat acceptance” movement with its message of “eat like a pig and become beautiful!”?

I’m not gonna spoil the ending of course but it’s worth the journey. It seems predictable because he’s a caterpillar but it leaves things wide open for a sequel. I mean, this guy is now more mobile than ever - what else is he gonna eat next? A pizza?! Two pizzas?? THRE - you’re right, that’s too much…

You know what made me really laugh? My edition had a SUMMARY at the start! The summary was this large paragraph that was as long as the book’s lines put together! Who needs a fucking summary for The Very Hungry Caterpillar? Who can’t read this in no seconds flat and get the jist of it?! Which parent is looking at this wondering if it’s suitable for their braindead sprog to dribble on?!

Anyways. This thing is still the greatest book about greedy caterpillars out there and rightly deserves its legendary status. Just don read it when you’res dieting hawmahashsahwanasm…

12/21/15: I got this last night for Nephew. This particular edition has cardboard pages with holes bored through where the caterpillar has been eating. I'm hoping he will like the tactile presence of the book. I know he will like the bright colors.

Update 1/4/16, post-holiday evaluation: Nephew LOVED this book. He had quite a stack of books under the Christmas tree this year. This was the first one he picked up. Later, after he climbed into mom's lap for a while, he pulled this with him and handed it over for reading. When asked if he wanted to look at other books, he most certainly did not. He wanted to read this one some more. In short, total, complete success. Because all that matters is that I am the best auntie. And also that I get Nephew addicted to Goodreads someday.

I suspect that most of the Western world knows the counting book tale that tells of how a little egg sat upon a single leaf eventually opens to reveal a tiny, ravenous caterpillar that grows and grows until it eventually turns into a beautiful butterfly. Besides Peepo!, The Very Hungry Caterpillar was one of the first books I encountered as a child in which I felt I was encouraged to explore and interact with. From its little, ever-growing holes to those steadily growing page-widths, this was a picturebook that offered a very different kind of play.

Used endlessly for exploring a butterfly’s life-cycle, it is Carle oft-mimicked collagic style that we all remember. Having spent most of his childhood in Stuttgart, Carle’s illustrative career began with his work on Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? at which time he was in the USA designing adverts and working on newspapers. His use of coloured and hand-painted tissue as well as a penchant for illustrating the animal world is what, I think, he is most recognised for.

If I was going to gift a very young child any version of this book these days, it'd definitely be the board book version which can easily withstand those wriggling, inquisitive fingers.
