Heart of Darkness had some interesting descriptions of the Congo and colonisation. For a short read though it took quite a lot of effort to finish. It was hard to connect with the characters and the ending seemed to trail off without so much resolution.

For a long time I was struggling to articulate how I felt about this book. I was told it was written as a way of condemning imperialism and the effects it has, though I was not totally convinced. After reading Chinua Achebe’s essay/lecture ‘An Image of Africa’ I feel more confident in what I was thinking. Conrad’s portrayals of the Congolese people are pretty racist, it is as if he isn’t even describing them as people, but as creatures he is observing. The plot itself doesn’t really focus on the Congo either, but on the character of Kurtz; the Congo is merely a setting for his mental decline. It’s hard to take the narrators cries of horror seriously when they fail to treat the people around them as being equal to them. Achebe pulled a quote from Albert Schweitzer which I feel fits the vibe of ‘Heart of Darkness’ pretty accurately, “The African is indeed my brother but my junior brother”.

2 stars instead of 1 since the style of writing was good, I just didn’t like the substance.

"CUORE DI TENEBRA"

Charlie Marlow è un abile marinaio, di ritorno da uno dei suoi numerosi viaggi, rimane affascinato da una mappa raffigurante un sinuoso fiume che si svolge negli spazi ancora inesplorati dell’Africa nera, decide così di cercare lavoro con una compagnia che commercia avorio proprio in quelle zone.
All’arrivo in Africa si renderà presto conto del fascino oscuro e folle di quella terra fatta di riti ancestrali ma anche di bianchi senza scrupoli e sarà proprio in una delle tante basi della compagnia che verrà assegnato ad un vaporetto diretto alla base più misteriosa e sconosciuta, edificata nella zona più profonda e solitaria di quella terra "governata" da Kurtz, misterioso agente della compagnia su cui aleggiano strane leggende e dicerie.
L’incontro fra i due cambierà per sempre l’esistenza del protagonista.

"Cuore di tenebra", scritto nel 1899, capolavoro indiscusso di Conrad, è un racconto basato su esperienze di vita vissute dallo stesso scrittore nel 1890 su di un vaporetto sul fiume Congo (lo stesso Kurtz pare sia una persona realmente esistita ma con altro nome).
Lungo lo svolgersi di questa storia dai tratti cupi, folli, alienati, in cui si riuscirà a sondare le profondità dell’animo umano, il lettore si confronterà con un’umanità primordiale, con il mistero della natura e l’avidità senza scrupoli del "bianco progresso".
Con una scrittura fluida, ispirata e capace di destabilizzare il lettore e farlo sentire quasi a disagio, Conrad ci accompagna in un Africa ostile, ancestrale, misteriosa, selvaggia, a tratti folle ma anche affascinante e conturbante.
Un racconto capace di produrre empatia in chi lo affronta e che lascia il lettore, alla conclusione del racconto, con una piacevole sensazione di stranimento.
