I've read several of Scott Turow's novels and find them similar to Grisham's. In general, I like all of them, but they are by no means great literature. So I found "Pleading Guilty" to be good, but not exceptional. The characters were reasonably rounded, and the story was exciting, although a little too complicated for my liking. There are many possible explanations for the "crime" and it was difficult to try to keep them all straight and to try to figure out which was real. This is a book that one could easily read twice just to try to analyze everything more carefully. But I did find it hard to put down, and finished it pretty quickly. The story evolves around the search for a missing partner, and $5.6 million, from a law firm that represents a major airline company. The protagonist, Mack, is not at all likable in my eyes, but he is interesting, and he keeps the action moving. In a nutshell, this is a good book for anyone who enjoys Grisham or any of the other Turow novels.

I could not develop an interest in the story nor any of the cliché type characters. I gave it a diligent effort. But with books laying around begging to. E read and enjoyed ... I threw in the towel.

I was a bit disappointed in this book, as I liked the last book I read by the author a lot more. This one was strange in some ways. The main character, a low-level partner in a law firm, seems like he's pretty smart and capable, but he kind of whines a lot about his hardships - mostly caused by drinking too much, but I suppose it started out from being an honest cop pushed into doing something dishonest, then getting caught and later being pushed to testify against his partner.

He complains about his love life, about being out of shape, about being underpaid, etc. Possible spoiler here...  But when he gets a chance to have a relationship with someone he likes, another lawyer, he can't seem to handle it and eventually ruins things. And when he gets a chance to be a success and do the right thing, he balks. In the end, he seems to lose by getting what he thinks he wants.

This book gave me the slightly unclean feeling I used to get whenever as a kid I hung out with the bad kids my mom told me to stay away from. I kept trying to give the narrator a chance despite, or initially because of, his sad backstory and lack of ambition or self-esteem. But when you throw in that the narrator is also really dumb, I'm out, 100 pages or so in. Best of luck, Mack, and for God's sake, brush your teeth or shave or something.

This is the third book in the Kindle County Legal Thrillers by author Scott Turow. This series started with a bang for me when I read the first book ‘Presumed Innocent’ but the next two books have been a bit of a let down. This one was the worst yet in my opinion and although I enjoy the writing I just couldn’t get excited by this one and was a close call whether to finish it or not. For me I prefer the authors novels that are based around the court room.

The novel is narrated by attorney Mack Malloy who is ex police, in his fifties and a recovering alcoholic. Mack works as an attorney at Gage & Griswell and is trying to locate another partner in the firm who has disappeared along with several million dollars. Trying to find his colleague is not a straight forward task and Mack’s life could be potentially put in danger.

I already have the rest of the books in this series so don’t intend to give up just yet, Scott Turow is a top author on his day.

Turow gives us a complex story line about American infighting in the legal profession. The early chapters show how much infighting exists in a large and powerful law firm. (Especially when the law firm is a large and the lawyers get lots of money.) There's a story line but the book has too much stuff.

Having just read The Last Trial, Scott Turow's latest book to be released later this year (2020), I decided to read one of Turow's early works. Pleading Guilty was published in 1993.
While I loved The Last Trial, a courtroom drama, I just tolerated this one. Pleading Guilty has its moments, including some clever surprises, but it plods along at a generally slow pace. The characters are pretty superficial. You never quite know who the good guys are and who the bad guys are.
This is about the disappearance of a lawyer from a big law firm, perhaps with over $5 million fraudulently obtained from an airline's settlement fund, a fund created to pay damages from an airplane crash that killed over 200 people. The book's narrator, Mack Malloy, is charged with finding his missing partner. Along the way, he discovers what really happened to the missing funds, among other things.
Not Turow's best work. His courtroom dramas are much better.

This was just okay for me. Definitely not as good as his earlier works.

I have loved all of Scott Turow's books, particularly Presumed Innocent. This one was so out of character. Not a thriller. I kept thinking something intriguing would happen but not. The main character was rather interesting but I ultimately got tired of his shallowness. Great writing but that was the only thing that got me to the end of the book.

I love love love Scott Turow and his ability to tell a story, and to keep you guessing long after other writers in the genre have given away the punch line. Better yet is his ability to weave some interesting life's observations into this great story-telling.
