Although this ranks lower to his other books I’ve read, it is still very good. A few things: 1. the story is a good one and keeps its pace as much as a thriller as a legal drama, 2. The narrator is a character you kind of know the least about although he is present throughout the book (an interesting technique), 3. Almost all the characters are in one way or another damaged and really not all that likable (some are less so than others but on the whole...). Turow’ so titles are always so good in that they are almost always double meaning. This one is no exception in that the main protagonist is a personal injury attorney but also the book is rife with people being “personally” injured throughout the book and across multiple fault lines (family, friends, partners, professional colleagues, etc.). Also the protagonists wife suffers from ALS which is also in a way a VERY personal injury. A still have a few of Turow’s I haven’t read but after having read three so far this year (one was a re-read), I think I’ll take a break from binging and pace myself to savor what’s left with a little distance of time.

I gave a 4 star because the author is clearly talented. However filibuster and inconsistencies ruined the experience somewhat.
Just as observed by a lot of readers, persistent use of first name and last name of characters in the same sentence makes it incredibly difficult to keep up. The author spent so much time on character development at the expense of plot that it became annoying at some point. Perhaps my biggest issue with this book is the grim and dark emotions it stirs, It created a certain gloom due to narration of such sad and black aspects of the human condition that I had to put it down for a few days.
Other than that, it's a great book. Picked up pace and became very enjoyable towards the end.

This had enought twists and turns to make it interesting. I don't know if I'd call it believable but it was fun, in its way.

Scott Turow is great at real legal thrillers...stories about lawyers, and the legal system, that ask raw questions about justice and the law. In this novel, a corrupt lawyer who is secretly dying is forced by law enforcement officials to expose a system of rigged verdicts. It is compelling, filled with memorable characters and gripped with a plot that should make other thriller type writers sweat at night.

This was a remarkable book from an author and a genre I don't usually read about. I was quite shocked that I liked this. The story was well thought of, well paced and well written. The characters are memorable and they became a part of you. It's a law story that has heart and I think that what was good about it. I think this book is underrated so I recommend everybody to grab a copy and read it! Watch out for the twist at the end!

Good trial novel

Twisted story line, lots of turns and surprises along the way. Writing was good, but not great. Story got stretched out.for the sake. Of adding pages, lots of characters tht became confusing at times

I enjoyed this book, it was a pretty good read. Overall it was a good story but, there were times I almost got bored with things that really didn't play that much into the story line. I did like toward the end when things started to come together, good twists and turns and an ending I didn't see coming which I think maybe I should have. Hind sight is 20/20 right, like the 6th Sense, you go back and watch it a 2nd time and you're like "Ah, Bruce Willis WAS dead the whole time!" Sorry if I spoiled that for anyone :) But in the end this book was worth the read especially if you're a Scott Turow fan, it's not your typical legal thriller but went in a different direction which I liked, good break from the usual legal thriller you're going to read out there which made it worth the read.

3.5 stars rounded up. Turow’s writing was as brilliant as always but the plot in this one just kinda dragged and the usual twist I expected was pretty subdued. I also didn’t like the ending, it wasn’t what I hoped for, however, overall this was a great read from a great author. I also loved recognizing all the characters from prior books (Sennett, Touhey, Klonsky, Stern, Horgan, Mel (forgot last name, etc)

Excellent !!
Scott Turow weaves a story that is fascinating and believable.
I loved the twists and turns and the final outcome.

I'm intrigued by legal stories and Scott does not disappoint.
From the back rooms of lawyer's offices and judge's chambers,
I'm titillated by the fact that he must have pulled most of his
characters from cases he was familiar with in his law career.

Being from Chicago, I recognize real people and places in this
book that have been transplanted to fictional Kindle County.
Added to it is Scott's own witty and wicked comments that
keep the reader entertained.

Great writer, but this is one depressing book. The story is of a long attempt to identify corrupt lawyers and judges in Kindle County, by turning one of the county's leading attorneys. There is no nobility in this exercise, as lots of corners are cut to make the various cases. There is no great victory party when the corruption is finally taken to a grand jury and leads to indictments and convictions. Scott Turow is a strong storyteller, with a few twists and turns, but the book contains no legal theatrics and is not really a "thriller" - just a long, grinding story ending in lots of people in jail.
