I was loaned this novel by my cousin who I feel has exquisite taste amd intelligence when it comes to most things. I'd heard of the author only in the context of The Cider House Rules, which I'd heard lots about when it came out but never watched. I had literally zero expectations going unto this read, other than that it would be a great one.
It was kind of milquetoast for me. The Severin and Utch backstories felt endless, and after the first 50 pages I put it down for a solid month (maybe 2 or 3). I finally picked it back up and am glad I read it through to the end, but it wasn't a story that would have me rabidly seeking out more of his work.
I will give him credit for being able to write about sexuality and sex in a way that is neither crass nor naive. He gets to the point of the sex without beating you over the head with too-overt language.
I found Severin to be a peevish character throughout, and a lot of the writing surrounding him and Utch and their more emotional moments had me picturing overwrought art house acting circa 70s and 80s.
It was fine, but I wouldn't label it a masterpiece. That said, since I've heard so much about The World According to Garp, I will add that to my reading list before I make a mass judgment on his overall style.
