So ends my travels with Holmes and Watson as written by Doyle.

As usual some of the short stories were a tad predictable but overall they were all quite entertaining. I liked the more modern setting of the early 1900s compared to the late 1800s of earlier stories, it made things seem a bit more refreshing.

One thing that I really disliked about the series was Sherlock's claim that more or less every case was the most complex or most interesting he'd ever come across, it just made me roll my eyes. Also, the repetition of words throughout was irritating to read, the word 'singular' was used way too much.

All in all, I'm glad I've finally finished with the Sherlock series, I was getting rather tired of the formulaic way Sherlock/Watson investigated their cases.

Oh dear. A sorry end for our hero. Totally boring in every respect. One of the plots was literally a guy stepping on a jellyfish. And to top it off, deeply misogynistic? They’ve always been a bit that way inclined, but these took it to a new level. Every single woman is described as being unusually beautiful. Strong incel vibes here. An inglorious farewell!
This concludes my Sherlock Holmes adventure. I have read them all. Now to read lots of books by women to atone for my sins.

El último jeje hubieron algunos relatos interesantes, me gustó cuando se sale un poco del patrón habitual es decir Watson relatando alguna aventura de Sherlock o de lleno un crimen. En dos relatos fue Sherlock quien narró, uno de ellos rememorando una situación y otra a medida que pasaba.
En relatos, me gustó el vampiro de Sussex, como al principio Sherlock descartó por completo los vampiros porque no hay cosas sobrenaturales. Eso me gusta de estás historias, que siempre hay una explicación lógica por más sobrenatural que parezca. Además que en este relato en particular, no hubo un asesinato si no otro caso.
En términos generales también me gusta cuando Holmes le da por su lado a los policías, se siente la mofa xd y luego cuando se explica les tapa la boca a todos, es una satisfacción increíble jajshsj
Igual me gustó que en un par de relatos me mostraban mejor la relación que existe entre Sherlock y Watson, muestran sus lazos. Diecisiete años trabajando juntos, se mencionó. Incluso en uno Holmes le dice que le gusta trabajar con él, no es solo porque fue el primero que paso por ahí y era lo que había, por decirlo de alguna manera.

Premessa: io adoro Sherlock Holmes. È uno dei miei personaggi del cuore, e Arthur Conan Doyle non mi ha mai delusa.

In ogni raccolta di racconti ce ne sono alcuni meno riusciti di altri, è naturale. E nonostante qui siano presenti delle vicende narrate da Holmes in persona (e addirittura uno in cui il narratore è esterno), in generale ho trovato i racconti contenuti ne Il taccuino di Sherlock Holmes piuttosto sottotono rispetto a quelli dell’altra raccolta da me letta (Le avventure di Sherlock Holmes) e ai romanzi (che però io ritengo insuperabili, quindi lasciamo perdere).

Restano comunque tutti racconti estremamente godibili e brillanti.

Now that I’ve finally finished reading the very last story (something I deliberately postponed) my time with Sherlock Holmes has drawn to an end! What a pity, I surely wouldn’t have minded reading more stories. But I’m satisfied with this collection as being the last ever. Although the cases in this collection might not be the most refreshing or clever ones, I think what makes the stories different from those before is that they add some final depth to Holmes, Watson and their relationship. There are so many great quotes that confirm what up until now the reader could only guess or assume. And although Holmes writing two stories felt out of character, reading his point of view was a nice way to get to know him even better. Probably for this reason my favourite collection of stories!

1. The Illustrious Client
Such a thrilling case with a terrible, seemingly untouchable villain who even attacks Holmes. This time Holmes trusts Watson (more or less) by letting Watson exaggerate his illness rather than faking it for Watson as well. And the Chinese pottery added fun to the story!

2. The Three Garridebs
Being seemingly based on a trivial thing like names, I really wondered about the motives. But why I really loved this story was the danger part and what it revealed about Watson:

n  "This is a more serious matter than I had expected, Watson," said he. "It is fair to tell you so, though I know it will only be an additional reason to you for running your head into danger. I should know my Watson by now. But there is danger, and you should know it."n

and Holmes:

n  'You're not hurt, Watson? For God's sake, say that you are not hurt?'
It was worth a wound - it was worth many wounds - to know the depth of loyalty and love which lay behind that cold mask. The clear, hard eyes were dimmed for a moment, and the firm lips were shaking. For the one and only time I caught a glimpse of a great heart as well as of a great brain. n

3. The Mazarin stone
A bit weird that it was written in third person... but I just really loved the setting of the story. Holmes is in serious danger, but he has everything under control. I really loved the dummy trick with the violin play. And of course, Holmes “can never resist a dramatic situation” :)

Overall, I think Case Book is the weakest of the Sherlock Holmes collections. It seems pretty clear that Doyle was running out of good ideas and more and more resorting to recycling tropes and themes from previous stories in slightly altered forms. Still enjoyable and entertaining, though!

The Adventure of the Illustrious Client – 4* – One of the better and more unique stories in the Holmes canon, it drips with Victorian mores regarding sex and male-female relations, but also has a pretty terrific climax as well as one of the more memorable villains in Baron Gruner.

The Adventure of the Blanched Soldier – 3* – Pretty much The Adventure of the Yellow Face with different particulars, and also narrated by Holmes, which was a really bad idea.

The Adventure of the Mazarin Stone – 2* – Wikipedia tells me this was originally written as a stage play, which is why it's in the third person. Perhaps that's why it's also so forgettable.

The Adventure of the Three Gables – 1* – Aside from the casual racism, this story also features an anticlimactic conclusion and a dull, meandering path to getting there. One of my least favorite stories.

The Adventure of the Sussex Vampire – 5* – I'm a sucker for English gothic mysteries, apparently, and it's hard to get more gothic than a mother accused of sucking her son's blood. This one is flattered by the dullness of the story right before it, but I think it stands pretty well on its own.

The Adventure of the Three Garridebs – 2* – This story was better done when it was The Red-Headed League.

The Problem of Thor Bridge – 3* – Not a bad story, except for the appearance of the stock "American who talks like a Brit doing a bad impersonation of an American" character that Doyle tries on from time to time.

The Adventure of the Creeping Man – 4* – A little science fiction thrown into this one makes it particularly memorable, even if the "science" part is ridiculous.

The Adventure of the Lion's Mane – 2* – If it's obvious to me from the beginning what "the lion's mane" is, everyone else should be ashamed of themselves for how long it took them to figure it out. Also, it's narrated by Holmes, and that, as we've established, is not fun at all.

The Adventure of the Veiled Lodger – 2* – Pretty unclear to me what the purpose of this story is.

The Adventure of Shoscombe Old Place – 3* – A few more gothic touches with this one, including some grave robbery, and all in all not a bad story for Doyle to go out on.

The Adventure of the Retired Colourman – 3* – Again, not bad but nothing terrific either. Another perplexing chapter in the series of cases where Holmes asks Watson to investigate for him, then criticizes almost everything he does.

Y así termino con todo lo que hay escrito sobre Sherlock Holmes. Sé que no es tanto, pero en algún momento tuve la sensación de que pasaría mucho tiempo leyendo sus aventuras y ahora ya he terminado el viaje. Probablemente este sea uno de mis libros recopilatorios favoritos, más que por los casos en sí, por la pluma de Doyle. Con el paso de los años fue volviéndose más delicada, más inteligente y cada vez más placentera de leer.

La aventura del vampiro de Sussex: ¡me encantó! El misterio era sencillo de resolver, pero disfruté mucho del cómo estaba escrito y de los personajes involucrados. No era un caso grave, aunque sí más dramático. Más centrado en los personajes, en sus actitudes y lo que estos piensan. La persona responsable de todo no deja de darle un toque macabro al relato. Aún sigue siendo gracioso que para Doyle latino sea lo mismo que tropical, pero al menos la mujer peruana era un buen personaje.

La aventura del fabricante de colores retirados: también me gustó mucho este macabro relato. Con el paso de los años los casos adquieren un tono macabro, más por la pluma de Doyle, por la forma en que los narra que por lo que sucede. Siempre ha habido muerte, engaños y robos. Sin embargo, ahora hay un tono más oscuro en el cómo los vamos descubriendo. Un nuevo caso en el que Holmes usa a Watson y su ingenuidad para engañar al sospechoso. Fue inteligente la resolución y también el crimen.

El problema del puente de Thor: un gran caso. Ya sea con el misterio y el crimen, las pistas fueron sencillas como para imaginar hacia donde iban los tiros. Un crimen astuto por el cómo se llevó a cabo y por la misma mente maestra detrás. Quizá no fui tan fan de los personajes involucrados y de sus futuros, pero aún así me gustó mucho.

La aventura de Shoscombe Old Place: el que menos me ha gustado hasta ahora, quizá porque se sintió menos "emocionante" que los anteriores. En los previos había un factor humano y dramático muy importante. Aquí fue más frío en algún aspecto. Eso no quita que fuera interesante las pistas que se van dando, ya que todo apunta a ese hermano lleno de deudas y que jugó toda su vida en un caballo, sin embargo, al final el giro es algo que nadie esperaba.

La aventura de los tres Garrideb: Holmes ama tanto a Watson que casi me hace llorar. El mejor momento es el que muestra el cariño que se tienen. El relato recuerda al de la liga de los pelirrojos por lo ridículo de toda la situación y el cómo alguien puede caer en ella. Quizá por la misma existencia del otro relato, podemos notar con facilidad el "truco" utilizado. Sin embargo, se nota mucho el cambio en la pluma de Doyle, por más simple que sea logra darle un toque muy divertido.

La aventura del cliente ilustre: honestamente el personaje de la chica a la que iban a salvar era de los más desagradables que he leído en estos relatos. Incluso el mismo Holmes destaca que la chica casi lo saca de sus casillas y eso no es algo que se pueda decir con facilidad. Casi quería que fallaran para que ella se tuviera que comer sus palabras, pero nuestros detectives no harían algo así nunca. Es más un caso de farándula, escándalos y personajes de mala reputación. Estuvo divertido.

La aventura del soldado de la piel descolorida: ¡escrito por Sherlock! Ay, es cierto que Watson ya tiene todo el truco para hacer de los relatos divertidos pues maneja muy bien el humor ya sea en sus anotaciones o en sus mismos comentarios. Aquí se da a entender que Watson casi que juega un rol para hacer más evidente el contraste con Holmes. El detective como narrador resulta algo seco y él mismo se da cuenta. El caso está bien, no es algo de vida o muerte solo amigos y familiares preocupados por algo que no resulta ser tan grave. Como parece ser la tónica en sus últimos relatos, al final no hay un mal mayor solo una respuesta algo rebuscada, pero de lo más normal.

La aventura de Los Tres Frontones: uno de los que menos me ha gustado. Vuelve a ser un caso de telenovela y dramas y escándalos (como la mayoría en este libro, es cierto), solo que menos interesante. Uno de esos casos en que la persona involucrada no sabe por qué es el interés de alguien más, solo que en este caso ese alguien más es una persona poderosa y astuta, dispuesta a todo para conseguir lo que quiere.

La aventura de la piedra del Mazarino: es como una obra de teatro. Tercera persona y casi puro diálogo, todo transcurre en las habitaciones de Baker Street. Aún así me gustó mucho, se ve el ingenio de Holmes y su personalidad tanto dramática como burlona. Aquí tendríamos como narrador a Doyle como narrador omnisciente, el que nos cuenta todo lo que sucede en la habitación en un periodo reducido de tiempo. De verdad resultó ser muy interesante de leer.

La aventura del hombre que se arrastraba: último caso narrado por Watson (me emociona un poco este hecho, lo admito), en el que nos resume, como siempre menospreciándose, su rol en la vida de Holmes. Un caso como Jekyll y Hyde, más ridículo y dramático que otra cosa, pues la resolución al caso, como viene siendo el estilo, es algo por completo sacado de la manga. Eso sí, el actual estilo de Doyle le permite cerrar el relato con una crítica a la ciencia y el deseo de extender la vida que no está nada de mal.

La aventura de la melena de león: mi último relato por leer, y ¡escrito por el mismo Holmes! Lo cierto es que cerré esta maratón descubriendo con rapidez la verdad, pues dado el estilo que venía notando a lo largo de estos doce relatos parecía que la solución ya no estaba en el poder de los humanos sino que en datos extraños y ajenos a ellos. Eso no quita que el relato esté maravillosamente escrito y estructurado, el cómo vamos conociendo a los distintos involucrados, la historia de amor rota y los celos. Con un giro cuando nuestro sospechoso principal llega con la misma herida que provocó la muerte de la víctima.

En las anotaciones se hacía mención a escenas homosexuales o que lo insinuaban. No sé el tipo de amor entre ellos, pero no se puede negar que había eso: amor. Un amor puro y profundo, ya sea como amigos, amantes o compañeros. Al final esas son solo etiquetas. Para mí simplemente eran Holmes y su Watson.

El punto máximo de la pluma de Doyle que se permitía ofrecer nuevos narradores como él mismo o Holmes (por primera vez en su historia). Maneja muy bien los inicios, ya son más inteligentes y no tan al grano. Al mismo tiempo, la edad le llegó a nuestros personajes, son más cuidadosos y el cariño entre ambos es innegable. Es cierto que el único punto flaco para mí está en que estos relatos no tenían grandes casos que destacar, eran en su mayoría casos curiosos con resoluciones extrañas y divertidas. Aunque, por eso mismo, destacó aun más la pluma de Doyle que hizo que estos escándalos, confusiones y casos de mala suerte resultaran maravillosos.

Me despido encantada y enamorada de Holmes y su Watson, y todos los demás personajes que los acompañaron a lo largo de sus vidas.

Sehr durchwachsen. Manche Geschichten haben mir gut gefallen, andere gar nicht. Insgesamt konnte ich mich auch nicht so ganz mit der Kürze der Geschichten anfreunden, da baut sich für mich persönlich nicht genug Spannung auf.
