A great travelogue of Greece during uncertain times. Here Miller’s introspection hits on a deeper spiritual level rather than the more visceral or vulgar level that was shown in Tropic of Cancer and Capricorn. A search for what it means to be authentically human amongst ancient ruins in a time where man is constantly manacled. Miller’s journey to Greece is another part in search for freedom from many of the ailments of modern society, but even in the high times of traveling across a historic land and meeting new people there’s a sense that it won’t last. With WWII looming overhead, Miller’s time of reflection and search of purity is cut short, eventually being forced to return to America as nothing gold can stay.
