Honestly truly trash but very enjoyable. This main character is such thinly veiled Ethan. The gender politics are questionable at BEST but there are some good lines that are surprisingly touching.
Really grew on me after about 50 pages or so, and then it really managed to connect emotionally with me. Surprisingly great, though by now it shouldn't be a surprise that Hawke can do this and that and succeed at it all.
This one surprised me. It had been sitting on my shelf for years and years and when I finally took it down, it hit me in the way Fante hit me when I first read him. Hawke is the real deal, a writer. I have not read much fiction for years, but this one startled me awake. It hums and vibrate with the energy of a young man on the edge. The words sing and zing and tumble all around you. Yeah, this book.
Really enjoyed this book! The dialogue was fresh and realistic, so much so that the both protagonists annoyed me at times (not even going into that night in Paris...) William definitely reminds me of some men I have encountered in real-life, unnerving and endearing in equal measure, and it was exciting to be transported back to the 90s and the big and intense feelings one has when falling in love for the first time, it made me feel all the feels! And I'll definitely read more by Ethan Hawke.
What can I say... Ethan Hawke! This is probably my favorite book ever. I think it is just because Ethan Hawke is the author. Whenever I read a book, I always picture Ethan Hawke as the male lead. So of course, when I read this I pictured him as the main character. How devastated I was too see the movie, and find Ethan Hawke portray the father of William Harding! Man, I am getting old! I still will always picture Ethan as William, as well as Howard Roark, the male lead in my other favorite book, Ayn Rand's, The Fountain Head.
i do not hate ethan hawke, in fact i was rooting for him the whole time i read this book. and while parts of it were beautiful, i found the characters pretty unlikable. 2 1/2 stars.
Just read this great read in its entirety today. I really enjoy Ethan's writing, makes me laugh, smile and kept me intrigued page after page. His characters are relatable and his words are honest.
I believe The Hottest State is the first book he published. I recommend reading this book.
The worst book I have read in many years. I couldn't shake the feeling I was reading a woeful homage to The Catcher in the Rye the entire time. Do yourself a favour and don't waste your time.
a book I bought years and years ago that I've carried around but never read. Hawke's first book is very good. A young actor in love in New York. It's much more original and raw than it sounds. A quick entertaining read.
exquisitely written short novel: this man can write. A rather atypical love story, unrequited love that is, written by a male about his inability to make the object of his affection respond as he'd like. I'm finding it hard to put down.
