Crime fiction focused on homicide in Miami. An entertaining read.

Μαύρο νέο-νουάρ αστυνομικό μυθιστόρημα που έχει παρόμοια θεματολογία με βιβλία του Έλμορ Λέοναρντ και του Τζιμ Τόμσον.

Ο Τζούνιορ Φρέγκνερ μόλις έχει αποφυλακιστεί από το Σαν Κουέντιν της Καλιφόρνια, και με ένα πορτοφόλι γεμάτο κλεμμένα χρήματα και κλεμμένες πιστωτικές κάρτες, φτάνει στο Μαϊάμι. Δεν πρόλαβε να φτάσει στο αεροδρόμιο, και έσπασε το δάχτυλο ενός "Χάρε Κρίσνα", ενός νέου που ανήκε σε μια θρησκευτική αίρεση που τα μέλη της ζητιανεύουν σε διάφορα μέρη νόμιμα. Δεν είχε και άδικο, αλλά... το θέμα είναι ότι ο νεαρός Κρίσνα πέθανε λίγο αργότερα από το σοκ, χωρίς βέβαια ο Τζ��ύνιορ να το γνωρίζει.

Ο υπαστυνόμος Χοκ Μόσλι αναλαμβάνει την υπόθεση. Ο Τζούνιορ πιάνει ένα δωμάτιο σε ένα ξενοδοχείο, χρεώνοντας τα πάντα σε μια κλεμμένη πιστωτική κάρτα. Ψωνίζει και μια πιτσιρίκα που κάνει βίζιτες, την Σούζαν, και η σχέση τους προχωράει σε άλλο επίπεδο. Όμως, διάφορες καταστάσεις και διαβολικές συμπτώσεις, κάνουν τον υπαστυνόμο Μόσλι να μπαίνει στη μύτη του Τζούνιορ. Αυτός πλακώνει στο ξύλο τον Μόσλι, με άνανδρο τρόπο βέβαια, και από κει και πέρα βλέπουμε τον Μόσλι να προσπαθεί να πιάσει τον Τζούνιορ. Αυτά σε γενικές γραμμές, αλλά συμβαίνουν πολλά περισσότερα πράγματα.

Η ανάπτυξη των χαρακτήρων είναι εξαιρετική, ακόμα και οι δευτερεύοντες χαρακτήρες έχουν βάθος. Ο Τζούνιορ είναι ένας ψυχοπαθής που ζει κλέβοντας και κάνοντας διάφορα κόλπα. Ξέρει ότι κάποια στιγμή θα μπει φυλακή, αλλά αυτός συνεχίζει. Η Σούζαν είναι μια νέα που απλώς ψάχνει έναν άντρα να την φροντίζει, είναι απλή κοπέλα, αλλά όχι χαζή. Ο Χοκ Μόσλι δεν είναι ο συνηθισμένος αστυνομικός. Μεσήλικας περίπου, με έναν αποτυχημένο γάμο, ο μισός μισθός του πάει για διατροφή στην πρώην γυναίκα του και τις δυο έφηβες κόρες του, ζει σε ένα μουντό δωμάτιο σε ένα φτηνό ξενοδοχείο, και έχει πρόβλημα με τα δόντια του: Για την ακρίβεια δεν έχει καν δόντια, φοράει ειδικές μασέλες, οι οποίες τραβάνε τα πάνδεινα μέσα στην ιστορία.

Πολύ χιούμορ μέσα, αλλά μαύρο, έτσι όπως μ'αρέσει. Η αφήγηση είναι εξαιρετική, σε κάνει να διαβάζεις το βιβλίο απνευστί. Η ιστορία φυσικά εξαιρετικά ενδιαφέρουσα με πολλές αξιομνημόνευτες σκηνές. Οι περιγραφές του Μαϊάμι όπως πραγματικά είναι, με όλους τους Κουβανούς, τους Πορτορικάνους, τους εγκληματίες κλπ κλπ, πραγματικά πολύ καλές.

Του βάζω άριστα γιατί πραγματικά πέρασα πολύ καλά διαβάζοντάς το. Έχει γίνει και ταινία, με τον ρόλο του Τζούνιορ να τον έχει ο Alec Baldwin και τον ρόλο του Μόσλι ο Fred Ward. Έχω ακούσει καλά λόγια και για την ταινία. Θα την δω κάποια στιγμή. Το βιβλίο μπορείτε να το βρείτε, πλέον, πολύ φτηνά. Σίγουρα αξίζει.

I remember seeing this movie years ago, but I didn't remember a whole lot about it. After reading the book I can see why it probably didn't exactly stick in my memory. It's the tale of a sociopath criminal and his crime spree in Miami. It's also the tale of the homicide detective chasing after him. The criminal, Freddy Frenger, isn't the sharpest tool in the shed, although he seems to think he is. Our detective, Hoke Moseley, is a down on his luck cop struggling to make it through life day by day. The game of cat and mouse they play shifts into high gear in the second half of the book and I found that part in particular to be very enjoyable. I wouldn't call this a life altering book, but it's not too bad.

Miami Blues is the first book in a 1980s series of hardboiled, black comedy crime stories introducing Detective Hoke Moseley of the Miami homicide squad. Through a string of seemingly unrelated crimes Moseley uses his instinct, luck, and doggedness to pinpoint the perpetrator as being a man who goes by various aliases but prefers being called Junior. Junior has just been released from prison in California and has come to Miami to start a new life (or at least commit crimes in a state where he hasn’t any prior offenses). I couldn’t decide who was more intriguing Moseley or Junior!

The whole time I was reading Miami Blues I couldn’t help thinking that it felt like a mixture of two books I've enjoyed before: Raymond Chandler’s private eye character Phillip Marlowe in The Big Sleep and Elmore Leonard’s career criminal character Chili Palmer in Get Shorty. Then there are the black comedy elements that had me shaking my head at the dumb luck and dumb choices some characters made. While there is frequent violence present in all these books, it is described in a matter-of-fact way rather than focusing on gore.

There is a 1990 screen adaptation of Miami Blues by the same name. While it has several well-known actors starring in it, that didn’t help the film’s quality in my opinion. In fact, I would advise skipping the film altogether. Besides the acting being flat or actors speaking it fake accents, the film’s brevity causes it to leave out points that would have added to the black comedy, and, finally, it failed to introduce a few side characters (so the viewer must assume their connection).

I’m a fan of noir and hardboiled vintage books. However, this book was a delightful find for me – a new author! Never heard of Charles Willeford but this man (according to his Wiki page) lived a varied and colorful life, and it shows in his writing. I finished this book in just over a day’s time because of the breezy writing and the fast-paced plot. I will definitely be following it up with the next in the series New Hope for the Dead .

An introduction to a truly hard-boiled detective, a police homicide sergeant in Miami who goes up against a sadistic criminal. Atmospheric and interesting as much for the era as the setting including under-developed female characters whose treatment is typical and no longer tolerated.

Es del tipo de novela que a mi me gusta. Unos personajes bien perfilados; una trama redonda; humor, un poco de sexo y violencia.
Un libro con las páginas justas y adecuadas. No se trata de ser más largo o más corto, sino de adaptarse a lo que uno quiere contar. Y Willeford lo clava. Y esto tiene mucho mérito porqué esta novela se podría alargar mucho más.
Podrían ser cinco estrellas, pero quiero más de Charles Willeford. Seguro que las consigue.

Very good.
It's the kind of novel I like. Well defined characters; a round plot; humor, a little sex and violence.
A book with the right and proper pages. It's not about being longer or shorter, but about adapting to what you want to tell. And Willeford sticks it. And this has much merit because this novel could be much longer.
It could be five stars, but I want more from Charles Willeford. Sure he gets them.

A fun read. I’m not a big fan of the crime genre and don’t remember what I read or heard that caused me to put this on my to-read list (or rather to-listen since I did this on Audible) list. But I’m glad to have done so. Mosely is definitely an engaging cop protagonist and I may lsiten to other novels in the series. Compared to other works I encountered in the genre, this was just plain fun and completely unselfconscious (I’m not into heavy noir.)

It was also fun to revisit a time before cell phones, before we could even take for granted that everybody would even have a landline, and before Miami Beach became hip.

Will need to finish this Hoke series.

Miami Blues is a bacon-decked, cheese-drenched, all-beef burger with a side of crisp, greasy, cayenne-peppered fries and a combo-size (Xtra-large) plastic cup full of more whiskey than cola. In other words it's an off-beat, breezy crime novel that I swallowed more than chewed over the course of one evening of reading and drinking alone. One star is a burp, the next a congratulatory pat on my tummy, then a satisfied knick at my teeth with a toothpick, and the fourth the pleasant surprise of a few patches of cheese stuck to the empty burger wrapper, which I enthusiastically pried free with tongue and tooth.

A charming psychopath and his ditzy babe, casually corrupt and begrudgingly decent cops; meandering conversations built upon cool, punchy dialogue; a few unexpected scenes of brutal violence; gallows humor and false teeth: what more is there for me to say in this review?

For dessert: vinegar pie.

CARRAMBA CHE SORPRESA! QUENTIN TARANTINO E' QUI!!!!

Una piacevole sorpresa è stato questo libro. Un hard boiled colmo di ironia, scritto con intelligenza, ambientato in modo realistico in una Miami degli anni ’80, che penso assomigli alla Miami di oggi, meta di arrivo degli immigrati cubani, i Marielitos, che vanno a riempire le fila della povertà, della criminalità e della prostituzione. Non sono loro i protagonisti delle vicende, però, pur essendo un sottofondo presente e ben caratterizzato. E’ Junior, un criminale psicopatico di pura razza bianca appena uscito dall’ultimo soggiorno in carcere in California e sbarcato a Miami per organizzarsi una vita “normale”, di uomo di famiglia, tutto casa e lavoro. Quale lavoro? Sorvoliamo. Il caso lo fa incontrare con il sergente Hoke Moseley, e dal caso nascono sparatorie, rapine, omicidi, violenze, tutte originate dalla personalità criminale e psicotica di Junior.
Se il genere piace, ne consiglio caldamente la lettura. Ti tiene incollato alle pagine fino alla fine che è una meraviglia.

Miami Blues è un romanzo hard-boiled che scorre veloce come un battito di ciglia, non capirete bene come mai ma vi accorgerete di averlo finito mentre ci pensate.
Facile in questo caso associare un brano musicale al libro a cui Tarantino ha dedicato Pulp Fiction ... godetevi la scena !
Tre personaggi attorno ai quali ruota la vicenda ed un protagonista : Miami, città nella quale "girare senza un arma fa una certa impressione", "troppo spietata per fare dei figli", "dove le famiglie possono disfarsi in baleno", le strade intasate, il caldo umido che si appiccica addosso mentre leggi.
Hoke Mosley, detective senza un soldo perché paga gli alimenti alla moglie , che vive in uno squallido albergo dove "devi far squillare il telefono almeno venti volte perchè il tipo della reception è duro d'orecchi e spesso si allontana". Hoke è in gamba, intelligente, border line, non aspetta certo rinforzi o mandati per intervenire, ha una dentiera ballerina che più volte finisce per strada a causa dei pugni presi.
Freddie Frenger, detto Junior, psicopatico appena uscito di prigione, ossessionato da dover fare qualcosa nella vita rispetto alla quale si sente un di avere un atteggiamento responsabile e intelligente salvo poi pestare o sparare al primo essere che incontra. Miami è la sua città .... sarebbe stata la sua città ..... non sarà mai più la sua città.
Susan, studentessa squillo, giovane apparentemente stupida ma in realtà scaltra e opportunista, per lei il finale del libro e , a riconoscimento della vittoria in questa storia ,per quanto sempre piccole e relative siano le nostre vittorie in questa vita :
"Vince la torta all'aceto
OCALA - la signora Susan Mansfield, nata Waggoner, ha vinto la disfida delle torte delle tre contee . Di seguito la ricetta . Al momento di ricevere il premio la signora ha dichiarato < Devo ancora incontrare un uomo che non vada pazzo per il mio dolcino>"
La scrittura di Willeford è precisa ma fluente, i personaggi sempre ben delineati, descritti con spessore sia internamente che esternamente, le strane coincidenze che si manifestano all'inizio del romanzo inducono abilmente a proseguire dritti fino alla fine.
Alcuni elementi si ripetono quasi con ossessione e sono caratteristici dei tre personaggi: la dentiera, il dover far fare venti squilli e la mancanza di soldi (Hoke ; non fare domande se non intelligenti, essere responsabili e avere una lista (lo psicopatico); fare da magiare bene, avere un'auto e avere un uomo a fianco ( Susan).
Ritengo che proprio questa continua ripetizione, quasi ad identificare le quotidiane ossessioni di ogni uno di noi, sia la chiave per cui i protagonisti si sentono in qualche modo "vicini" e la simpatia e l'interesse del lettore si ripartiscano equamente tra i tre.
Anche quando l'ispettore subisce l'aggressione di Junior e finisce all'ospedale, non si prende posizione, non si chiede giustizia ma si gira pagina per leggere cosa succederà e non è un caso che l'unico personaggio che a gran voce vi farà pensare "questo str... deve finire in galera !" sarà un marginale poliziotto corrotto a nome Wilson, totalmente accessorio e ininfluente alla storia.
Fantastico il riferimento alla poesia haiku , antica arte poetica Giapponese basata rigorosamente su 17 sillabe

Difficile spiegare come questo tratto di notevole spessore culturale possa entrare in questa pazza storia ed essere coerente con i suoi personaggi .
Le 4 stelle di giudizio nascono proprio da qui, dalla capacità dell’autore di coinvolgerti al punto tale da farti pensare che tutto sia possibile e ragionevole a Miami come nella vita.
Sia che si tratti di un incontro casuale tra un pregiudicato e la sorella dell’uomo che aveva ucciso la mattina in aeroporto storcendogli il dito sia che una squillo portoricana di 14, 16, 19, 20 o 21 anni (?) studi Haiku.
Un ultimo accenno alla solitudine, tema caro ai personaggi del filone hard-boiled, anche qui la solitudine concede un piccolo spazio di rivincita a Junior e Susan, anche qui è uno spazio destinato a durare poco restituendo ad ogniuno la propria solitudine oppure la morte , estrema solitudine o una vaga promessa di un'altra possibilità, comunque temporanea, di uscirne per un po’. Come sempre, è l'orgoglio che ci fotte (si pensi al colloquio in Pulp Fiction tra Butch e Marcellus ) e volendo noi credere di essere nel giusto, di essere coerenti, di affermere noi stessi prendendoci in mano la vita senza compromessi, ci ritroviamo tristemente soli e inevitabilemete sconfitti.
Leggetelo, ne vale la pena, ma non aspettatevi troppo e sarà gradevolissimo.
