only inspirational if you think its hard for two whiny rich kids to get paid to live their dream by burning more fossil fuel than i will ever see in my lifetime.
Fun book about two actors who take a few months off work in 2004 to ride their motorcycles from London to New York the “Long Way Round”.
The most interesting parts of their journey was the time spent in Kazakhstan, Mongolia, and on the Road of Bones in Russia. While Europe and North America provided nice roads to cruise on. Those other countries proved considerably more challenging. Much worse road quality and sometimes no road at all; mud, sand, gravel, dust, and even rivers to ford.
A buddy journey that shows both the highs and lows of an aiming impossible task.
The trip is detailed with the narrator switching between Ewen and Charley.
I did enjoy this book. Even though it was written by a rich, famous actor and a not so rich, not so famous actor, but that being said it was a great travel adventure story. The authors had great back up for their trip, and money to make the trip more comfortable. Oh, I believe this was one rough, tough, physically demanding trip, no doubt about it, but knowing you are one satellite phone call away from calling for help if needed has to be a sort of relief. That being said, I loved hearing about the cultures and people of another country, especially one so removed from our cushy lifestyle here in the United States. I was a little disappointed that there wasn't more detail on the travels in the States, but I get it. I have driven around this country enough to know that we consider a hardship when the vending machine won't take my dollar on the first try, or if I got sand in my undies from some exotic beach in Florida. You get my point, I'm sure. For anyone who loves to travel, or ride bikes this is a must read. Well written as the two authors narrative bounces back and forth from their own perspectives.
Granted, this is right up my alley, but it's a solid book regardless of your love of motorcycles and adventures.
The series is good, and the book is a nice companion to it. I actually rewatched the show simultaneously with the book, not a bad way to do it. Gaps in the book are filled in by the show and vice versa. At the end of the day, I just found myself wishing I could have gone along with them on their trip. I looked like an amazing time.
A fun read! My son gave me this book years ago, both because I love to have epic adventures and because I was riding motorcycles at the time. I’m no longer on the motorcycles, but enjoyed the experiences these guys had, especially in remote areas of Asia. I started it when I first received it, but somehow couldn’t get past their macho attitude about bikes and riding like crazy dudes. But this time, I felt more allowing and finished the book... liking it a lot more than I thought I might. It makes our world seem just a little smaller, in that what we share with others is so much greater that what separates us.
Wow! What an amazing trip! Ewan McGregor and his best friend, Charley Boorman, both bike nuts, traveled around the world on their motorcycles. It took them 4 months traveling 20,000 miles. I'm glad they took the time to documented their fantastic trip. Great Photos! I give this book 3.5 stars***.
Hmm. One of those books that I've read, but am finding it hard to digest what I thought about it. On one hand, I admire the journey and enjoyed reading about the places they went and the people they met. The hardships, accidents and tribulations were just as interesting as the nice moments. But on the other hand, I found both narrators to be a bit whiney, naive and not always that nice! I genuinely don't know if it was supposed to be a bit tongue in cheek, and the tone was just wrong, but sometimes I just had the urge to slap them through the pages and tell them to get on with it. It's a privilege to be able to take months out of normal life to do something so exciting and interesting!
But on the whole, I did enjoy the read and look forward to both reading the sequel and maybe tracking down the TV programme.
I'm not even going to blame the fact that I interrupted reading this with a few much better books & coming back to it was torturous. Too much man whining, too much man bickering, too much "Oh but we miss our families so much!!" No one forced you to leave them & take this trip, did they?
I first saw a copy of this book at the Ducati bike shop that my husbnd frequents. I thought, "Wow. That seems like a badass read," and promptly ordered a copy. It was a super interesting account of an amazing two-wheeled adventure. I agreed with many of the travel sentiments from taking trips via motorbike with my husband. I enjoyed following their journey and all the laughs and drama found therein. I will definitely be looking into their other books as I really enjoyed their spirited narratives.
