This wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t great either. Both Emmy and Josh were frustrating characters and on the immature side. The book itself could use some editing. I finished it, so I guess that something.

Dont waste your time unless you like lists. Every paragraph contains some kind of list-for breakfast we had bacon, eggs, toast, oj, and fruit. I got dressed in shoes, shirt, pants, socks. Can I give no stars?

3.5. A pretty good, clean romance that doesn’t necessarily end in romance. But it ends right. The moral coming from moms advice at the end, to make a choice. Because not making one is making one, but that’s not usually the right choice. Love is complicated. And I liked how our main characters worked through it. They both dragged things on for longer than they should have, they this prolonged their state of limbo and ultimately happiness. But I love that they both realized that in the end. That they made their choices.

Honestly 1.5, bur 2 because I actually finished it. This book felt like the author trying and failing to come up with enough narrative to string together a few bright quotes or paragraphs she scribbled down at one point. So little actually happens in this book; it is endless surface level feelings and conversations about feelings and feelings about feelings, without much authentic grounding in narrative or character development. I had a hard time mustering any sympathy for literally anyone besides Meryl, who everyone else had shocking little sympathy for, and I failed to understand the benefit of the doubt Emmy gave her brother.

The premise of this book seemed interesting, and I kept thinking that if I got far enough along it would find its rhythm and the plot would really come to life. However, that never happened. I had difficulty connecting with and feeling sympathy for the main characters. I found that I really didn't care whether Emmy can get out of the rut she's been in for years, or whether her brother Josh will actually marry his long time fiancé. By the time the wedding came around I just wanted to find out if they would or they wouldn't and be done.

I saw this book at the Book Thing and took it because it had "London" in the title....it wasn't until the last 1/4 of the book that you figure out why the book refers to London....and that was fine (though confusing!)....The inside cover states that this book is a very humorous read.....I do NOT agree. It was more of a deep think about book. It started as an awkward read....that I was hesitant to continue, but I am glad I continued perusing. I was much surprised and enjoyed her observation of falling apart relationships. The story is unrealistic...but really, is a book read for realism?

The story is about a girl who walks away from her fiance...and hides herself in a small Rhode Island town escaping NYC, her life....and reality. She is forced to go home for her brother's weekend and there she is confronted with her decisions as her brother struggles to decide if he should marry. Really...no comedy. The story has a good end...where she doesn't 100% rely on a guy to survive....

Read, but don't expect to laugh!

I really didn’t find this book to be very good, and my three stars might have been generous. To lump this in with all other “chick lit” is disrespectful to an entire genre and also slightly misogynistic. The only people who I can see liking this book are people in the same shitty situation. The only positive this I will say is that Dave does a good job of building a sense of impending unease throughout the novel.

Overall: would not recommend, unlikely to pick up another novel from this author.

Overall I really enjoyed this book. Far more than I expected to. After reading so many just ok books this one really stood out for me. I enjoy books that I feel like I can relate to and this one I could. The book is about family, relationships, and figuring out who you are and where you want to be with your life. I recommend reading this one.

Not sure how I found this book, but I am so glad that I did!

Although most of the action centers around a wedding, it was a sweet and enjoyable portrait, at its core, about the relationship between Emmy and Josh (siblings). Each had to face a particular set of demons, and, although they were there for each other, each had to make difficult decisions alone. And that they did, in a charming, believable way. (There was a little bit of farce at the wedding itself, but that's really OK.)

For a debut novel, this was strong. The writing veered toward overly descriptive at times, but also reflected a youngish narrator's point of view - so it worked. As with many delightful debut novels, this one left me wanting to read more of Laura Dave's work.
