Wow. Am I just getting old and prudish? Probably. But going after another woman’s husband was the final straw in the main character’s shallow and flawed character. I kept thinking she might get some insight into her place in the world, but she didn’t. I’m sorry I spent so much time on this one.

Diane Johnson is kind of like a modern-day Jane Austen. Very clever observations of relationships. Plus, it's in Paris, which is always wonderful.

No point. Caracters with nothing to give. Stories with nothing to tell. They say the author spending half her time in France but can't see that in the book. First book of her. I don t believe i will read another one.

I really enjoyed Le Divorce, because the author did such a good job sympathetically portraying a vapid, insecure, poorly educated woman. That woman appears as different characters in, it seems, all of Diane Johnson's work. I liked everything after Le Divorce less and less and feel sure I won't read Diane Johnson again.

This was my least favorite of the three Paris-based books that she wrote. I'm just not a fan of affair stories. I don't care how debonair and French the guy is - if he's married, he's off limits. Johnson does give a wonderful vision of Paris, though, so I cut her some slack.

Comedy of manners. American in Swiss Alps and Paris. She is not subtle like Henry James. Modern day meeting of cultures with a likable American protagonist who has lost her way but has lots of money to find her way home. eyeroll

An intriguing study of modern manners among Europeans, in the style of Jane Austen.

This is my favorite and second to read Diane Johnson. Subsequently, started L'Divorce and 'dnf.' Researched some of her other works, but haven't returned. If she's on your list, but you haven't yet, I would suggest this one or L'Marriage first. I would also space them out. Maybe pair with something nonfiction like Almost French.

Good story of a woman looking to change her life. What I enjoyed was learning about the French Napoleonic laws regarding inheritance.
