A much-loved children’s classic - apparently. I had never heard of it until I read Lucy Mangan’s Bookworm. I bought it for my daughter, along with a few others. The story is touching enough, and Toy Story 2 seems to have pilfered a few ideas from it. It also helps small children go to sleep at night, which reminds you that literature has its uses.

The author also wrote Black Narcissus.

My kids and I enjoyed this one. The lives of dolls are fun to imagine about.

I read this book when I was a little girl, and the characters always stayed with me. Precious Tottie and her family suffer their share of hardships but ultimately they have a happy life in their own little house.

As a kid, it definitely inspired me not to mistreat my own toys! ;)

Hard for me to write a review because I can't figure out if I should be thinking like the adult version of me or the child version. Hmmm.

You might think that, to a doll, many things would seem too large, but no. A doll is not as small as a beetle, for instance, and a beetle's world is just right for a beetle. When, too, you have lived as long as Tottie, you will learn that small things are not as small as they seem, nor large things as large; nothing is small and nothing is large when you have become accustomed to the world.

I read this years ago, not as a child but as a young adult. If my memory serves right, it's one of the best stories about love and death. And made digestible for children. I'd love to read it again and other works by the author.

This is a classic old children's book from the 1940s that thankfully has modern editions. I actually discovered this one for my daughter in early grade school and we read it together. I remember the bratty doll, Marchpane, and how we talked about not wanting to behave that way. It seems that old books were a lot more focused on forming behavior, whereas today's are all about entertainment value.

I read this as a child, but could only really remember the ending and the character of Birdie. I asked my Mum about it a few years ago and she remembered me reading a book about a dolls' house. We guessed at the title, and luckily it was as simple as "The Dolls' House."
It's quite an old book, so expect archaic language.
I found Mr Plantagenet to be rather annoying, something I either didn't notice before, or I just forgot about.
I'm glad I re-read the book, as it popped, somewhat fuzzily, into my mind on occasion; I feel I've satisfied the thought now.

I love the way Rumer writes about dolls. This book is certainly bitter sweet, but many lessons within.

Rumer Godden does not write down to children. She taught me to trust my understanding and to make connections. I will always be thankful that I discovered her as a weird bookish kid in mid-1960s American suburbia.

It was good but not great. My daughter and I absolutely love the Doll People series and both agreed that although there were similarities in premise, the writing of The Dolls' House did not approach the quality of the Doll People.
