Quite good. Better than I expected. Hard to take a classic like this and make a sequel. Harriet is nicer, softer more mature than in the first novel. A very enjoyable read.
This book is nowhere near as good as its predecessor, but what is? Harriet's parents have gone to Paris, and Ole Golly has returned to take care of Harriet for the duration. But Ole Golly has a big secret and Harriet has to spy until she finds out what it is.
Harriet the Spy by Louise Fitzhugh ,is one of my all time favorite books. In this companion novel, Helen Ericson does a good job of channeling Harriet's personality and the overall feel of the original. However, I didn't particularly like that Ole Golly came back in this book... the other book had ended with Harriet growing up and realizing that she didn't need Ole Golly anymore. There's a bit of a mystery surrounding her return that kept me reading, but overall I wasn't amazed by the conclusion.
Harriet the Spy is one of my favorite literary characters. In this story Harriet's parents go to France for 3 months. Harriet received a wonderful surprise when her parents hire back Ole Golly to stay with her. Ole Golly is not herself so Harriet goes on a spying mission to find out.
Not quite as strong as the first three books, but still definitely worth reading!! There was less detail, which I missed, but still a lot of passages in Harriet's voice, which made reading them very worthwhile. Overall, I gave the book five stars, because, of course I would!!
This is a sweet little story with a predictable plot; otherwise, I would have given only one star. The characters bear NO resemblance to Louise Fitzhugh's wonderful creation in the original Harriet the Spy.
I picked this book up a few years after reading the first one, and had no idea this was by a different author. But it didn't read any differently because I was young, and damn, I loved it. I thought that was the end of the series, and was saddened, but now I realize that this is the first of a series? Wow. I guess I have to revisit my childhood?
