Loved the book and it has many great learning scenarios for the classroom. The choices that the children made and the consequences of their choices would be an excellent lesson to incorporate into the classroom. I liked how each child's wish and their consequence was highlighted by their own story. And of course how the wishes gone wrong were "fixed" by the last wish was a point that could be made both positive and negative in a classroom.

A classic be careful what you wish for stories. Short Newbery honor story that shows three wishes that go the wrong way. This book is on Hoopla and has an excellent narrator. Story for all ages.

A "be careful what you wish for" set of stories. The dialect and language was a bit dated, and my 11-year old had a hard time getting started, but once you get into the first tale, it takes off.

When I was in grade school my teacher read this to the class and the Tree Man bit has haunted me ever since. Upon revisiting it about two decades later that chapter still made me uneasy. Fun October read.

Just as good the second time. My six year old thoroughly enjoyed this last year and wanted to read it again this year. It dosn't feel long, it has a few drawn pictures throughout- and it prompts good discussion. Wonderfully written. Perfect read-aloud.

It took 20 years to find this book. I had long forgotten the author and I could only remember bits and pieces of this book intermixed with his other works. But today, glorious day, out of the recesses of my mind, pulled the small detail that solved the mystery. It was a Newbury winner. Suddenly the list off potential books shrunk from infinite to a very short, organized list. My life is complete. I have found my white whale.

I read this book on the recommendation of one of my students. She said it was one of her favorite books growing up, so she passed it along for me to read. I had never heard of it, so I was curious what made her like it so much. Unlike what I normally do, I didn't read anything about what the book was about, other than that it was fantasy and that from the title it had something to do with wishes. So it was interesting reading Polly's story and slowly realizing that this book was going to be a lesson in "be careful what you wish for". I thought it was very well written and I liked that the author went from Polly's story to Rowena's story to Adam's story and slowly connected them back to Stew Meat's story (he was the narrator). Although Stew Meat calls it the "evil" that befell their town, I like that all three kids learned lessons that ended up helping them and maturing them. Polly's rant at Stew Meat at the end also made me laugh. Overall, it was probably not a 5 star book for me, but I enjoyed it very much and it's good to see an old story like this stand the test of time.

Delightful morality tale

Told in three small interlocking stories, all with the theme of getting what one wants, and the prices we pay for our fantasies, this is a fun little read for the middle children who would love such magic, and who would identify with yearnings, longings and fear of not being accepted. Nice job, both entertaining, and instructive.
