Just loved following more of Anne’s adventures and life in book 2 of the Anne of Green Gables series! In this book we follow Anne’s life a few years after her start in the town of Avonlea as a teacher. She is 16 years old and still as joyful as ever. She put her dream of going to college on hold so she can help Marilla with the farm, but we follow her beautiful life as a successful teacher and as a big help to Marilla of helping raise 2 rowdy twins! My favorites: Miss Lavender and her story, the twins, Davy and Dora and I really enjoyed Paul’s character. Also, the friendship between Anne and Diana was precious. I’m giving this 4 stars as I didn’t love this as much as I did the first book of course, but still had such a great time in Anne’s adventures. I just love how Anne sees the world and seeing her role as a teacher!

Until I started reading Anne of Green Gables late last year, I had no idea there was a whole series of Anne books. As I enjoyed the first one far more than I expected I would, I decided to crack on with the series entire.

While this second book doesn’t have quite the charm or the laughs of the first book, and increased the twee/romance level slightly more than I thought necessary, I still enjoyed it a great deal. Call it 3.5 stars, rounded up.

P.S. It kind of blows my mind that there were sixteen year olds working as teachers back in these pre-war days, to be honest. I wouldn’t trust most sixteen year olds to make me a cup of tea, let alone educate my kids...

Second in the Anne of Green Gables series and it's just as good as the first.

Anne is now in her late teenage years. We have two new residents at Green Gables, Dora and Davy, Anne has joined the workforce and there's a ton is scandal in Avonlea.

I really am loving the authors sense of humour when creating her characters. This book really builds on Anne's foundations and I'm looking forward to seeing how she handles her early twenties in the next in the series.

The second in the Anne series, this was written in a hurry because the publishers were clamouring for a sequel to the immensely successful 'Anne of Green Gables.' As a result, LM Montgomery used material she had already written into various short stories and the first chapter opens with such a tale. It is all very charming, if not quite as compelling as the first novel. In the sequel, the Anne is now16 and becomes the teacher at Avonlea school. Many beloved characters from 'Anne of Green Gables' appear again, as well as new ones. Mr. Harrison takes the farm next to Green Gables and his eccentric behaviour enlivens Anne's life. She meets (and loves) middle-aged Miss Lavendar Lewis and becomes deeply interested in her eventual destiny.Paul Irving is her most promising pupil and kindred spirit and twins Dora and Davy enter her life with humorous and heartwarming results. Anne is maturing but still has her great ideals and her innocent appreciation of the simple values of life, of nature and of the power of imagination. She is becoming a beautiful woman, as well as a clever one. During the two years covered by this book, she learns many life lessons, grows wiser and learns how to influence the lives of her pupils for good. Yet she resists full womanhood, preferring to cling to her childhood joys and values. Nevertheless, she is beginning to take her place in the adult world, as village teacher and founding member of the Avonlea Village Improvement Society, which works to improve the way that Avonlea is kept by it occupants, with many setbacks.
There is a delicious, homespun quality to these books. Montgomery writes about her characters with great affection, so that we are inclined to love them too. She herself grew up on Prince Edward island in Canada, in somewhat difficult and emotionally repressive circumstances, and she draws on her experiences in this series. It would be amazing if a child who has been as deprived as Anne in her early years were not emotionally damaged by it. Yet she is as much a lady as if she were brought up in a privileged household. It is all a bit hard to swallow, but if one suspends disbelief on this point, the stories are delightful and unforgettable. They were written in an age when people still believed in moral self-improvement and the moral vision expressed in them is both moving and inspiring. Loved it.

I picked up a book I had no intention of reading on a whim and discovered one of my new favorite series.

This must be positive karma for an immensely lovely deed I did in a past life. (It couldn’t have been this life, because I spend most of my time reading and eating cookies, and while I’d count both of those as immensely lovely activities I don’t know if I can unbiasedly say they’re really contributing to the greater good.)

I did not own this book when I finished the first one, an evil I had to counteract by purchasing this the next day. And then reading it immediately. And, once again, enjoying every second of it.

I do not know where all this good karma came from but I DO NOT want it to stop.

These books are just so lovely. I don’t even want to pick up the next one (which would be book #4) because then I’m one book closer to finishing the series, and I absolutely can’t have that because I want to live in this series forever.

I don’t know if I’ll ever really be able to write a true review of an Anne book. I definitely couldn’t with Anne of Green Gables. I think the best I’ll ever be able to do is write at length about how desperately I wish Anne and her kindred spirits were real, and I could live in Avonlea with them and visit Green Gables and all their beautifully named haunts. I’d go to school in the early twentieth century (previously a nightmare scenario for me) in a heartbeat if Anne Shirley would be there.

I just love these books so much.

Bottom line: It’s a very rare thing to find a story you love so desperately that you feel lucky to have discovered it. That’s how I feel about Anne.

I love these beautifully written novels. Anne of Avonlea tells the story of Anne from the ages of sixteen through eighteen. She has put off attending college for the time being to help at Green Gables and takes a job teaching at the local school.

Marilla takes in a set of orphaned twins, Davy and Dora. The twins have complete opposite personalities. I wondered why the author made Dora’s character so overlooked by the other characters. Especially, as the children’s mother had just died. No one seemed to look past her quiet exterior and try to get her to come out of her shell, nor did imaginative Anne consider that quiet Dora might be an imaginative soul on the inside. It just seemed like she was in the background. It bothered me. Rambunctious Davy, on the other hand, gets loads of attention in a case of the squeaky wheel getting the grease. He showed a lack of understanding that other people had feelings or mattered at times. He was written over the top. The other characters talk about how he’s their favorite twin and that he needs them more. It just sounded misguided to me. It showed me the characters’ flaws for sure and also made me think about the expectations people had for the behavior of boys and girls.

Anne has some growing pains as a teacher. It was interesting to see her struggle through finding a balance between ideals and reality. Haven’t we all been there?

We also see she hasn’t lost her lovely imagination or the ability to see beauty and joy in nature and friendship. I love how she and Diana call all the outdoor landmarks names that sound straight out of a fairy tale just like when they first named them in Anne of Green Gables. It makes me want to name my pond.

I may or may not have searched Gilbert's name and mostly only read the Gilbert & Anne parts. (I may. I mean, I did.)

My opinion? There wasn’t enough Gilbert and Anne parts. (I ship them SO HARD.) And this book was boring. It seemed rambly and all over the place (the first book was rambly too, but interesting-rambling. This one was just rambly-rambling. And I didn’t care much for the new side characters and especially Davy who is a little shit and I HATE HIM (please, please don't be in the next book.)

Although I didn't quite enjoy this (I skimmed like crazy - I'm not sure if I should even count this as a legit read?) I'm still gonna read the next book. I need to see what happens with Anne and Gilbert.

I honestly don't know how I'm supposed to put into words how much I adore EVERYTHING about the "Anne" books!!!

L. M. Montgomery has officially become an all time favorite author of mine. Meaning I will now proceed to buy every book she has ever written, and read every biography that has ever been written about her!

The way she can write the simplest thing, and then turn it into something with magic is just breathtaking to experience!

Anne continues to be one of my favorites characters to read about. She feels more like a friend than a fictional person made up of words.

I will forever be grateful for what L. M. Montgomery has given me, a new friend and a new home!

P.S. I'm in love with Gilbert, but he belongs with Anne!!
