This is the first installment for a new series character, personal security agent Charlie Fox. I wouldn't put her at the top of my list of favourite female mystery characters, but she's entertaining in a "kick ass" kind of way. I found the writing a bit rough at times, and wished that her personal relationship with her boss wasn't quite so central to the story.

This is the first of a series of detective style books with a female British lead character. Easy to read and put down.

My first read of Ms. Sharp. Can't wait to read another. She does at times confuse we American readers with common British phrasing that we just don't get, but she tells a great story and Charlie Fox is a very likeable heroine.

Charlie Fox has her first job as a body guard. Trey is a spoiled American teenager and she is to guard him. When someone shoots at him, Charlie's instincts and tenacious commitment kick in. The first drop is like a roller coaster, propelling the rest of the events. All the riders can do is hang on and try to survive. Florida is the setting for this fourth thriller.

The plot progression was fierce, in a good way so it really was a decent thriller. The characters felt plastic--and one of them was an atrocious teenager. I got through most of the book and with about 10 pages to go realized I really didn't care what happened to them. Oh well.

This was just an ok mystery. There was some suspense to the story, so there were times when I couldn't put the book down. But the characters were a little unbelievable, especially the teens. You should pick up the book, just to read the first page - I loved it; I wish the author had kept going with that kind of writing.

The first 70% of this book I enjoyed even though thriller-types aren't my favorite. The writing is good, the characters reasonably fleshed out and believable. The last 30%, unfortunately, depends on all characters suffering from galloping stupid in order to move the plot forward. The writing was good enough that I might try another one someday, but it won't be anytime soon.

Now I know why I was a little confused. It's the fourth book in the series, and I haven't read any of the other books.

So besides my own issues with being a little lost, I just didn't like this book. I thought that the main character was annoying and tried too hard to be sarcastic. I also wasn't really into the storyline. I'm not sure if it was just not my type of book, or if I just didn't like the author's writing style. Either way, I was not impressed and I will not be interested in reading any of the other books in this series.

#4 in the Charlotte “Charlie” Fox series. Finalist 2005 Barry Award for Best British Crime Novel. For British self-defense expert Charlie Fox this change of pace series entry takes place in Florida. Her interactions with teens while struggling to continue with her bodyguard assignment in the midst of uncertainty about the status of her boss and the identity of the "good guys" vs. the "bad guys" makes for a very entertaining read.

Charlotte “Charlie” Fox series - Working as a bodyguard, Charlie Fox's latest assignment, babysitting Trey Pelzer, the teenage son of a wealthy Florida computer programmer, is complicated by the disappearance of Trey's father and his entire entourage.

Zoe Sharp is one of the Murderati, a group of mystery writers who run a blog on the Internet. I was intrigued with what was written about her on the blog, so I tried her first mystery. I'm glad that I did.

Charlie Fox is a unique and interesting character. She is unconventional and tough, an ex-military woman. She is hired to protect a teenage boy and his father. She and the boy go through a bunch of adventures, staying a step ahead of some unsavory characters who want to kill them. Throw in some other interesting teens, Charlie's love interest, a computer subplot and an ex-FBI man who helps her and you have a heck of a story. Great job.
