The follow-up to "On Bullshit," Frankfurt steps back from the more humorous, tongue-in-cheek tone. I think this may be due less with the subject matter and more concerned with the reason why he decided to write a sequel of sorts. The sheer wonder at why anyone wouldn't care that truth and the pursuit of it is worthwhile permeates throughout. With this comes a pervasive and urgent demand for people to see the world and their lives not merely as something where truth is an academic exercise but truth as a requirement for living a full and honest life of value. In the end it's this demand that contains a truth all on its own.

An argument worth considering, but perhaps one that does not engage with the more interesting counter-arguments.

Sure, truth matters, but why? Frankfurt goes pretty methodically through all the reasons: personal, political, social, and psychological. In the end, a notion of truth is necessary to even have a concept of reality. I'm not a philosopher and only am amateur at evaluating philosophy, but I enjoyed this book and it made me think of all the ways the idea of truth affects my overall and everyday life. Also, remember, there are truths and truth.

Just read this one again. Delightful. Frankfurt is my favorite living philosopher. His writing is smart and direct. Sadly, such a style is quite rare in contemporary philosophy, and in contemporary scholarly writing in general.

In this one Frankfurt burns postmodernism to the ground and it is wonderful. Also, as I revisited this work as well as his “On Bullshit” I came to appreciate just how prophetic these works are. The issues Frankfurt tackles in these essays are more relevant now than ever. Truth has become irrelevant, and the entire political spectrum is flooded with bullshit, Frankfurts insights help us understand how that is happening and why it is so incredibly dangerous.

Though I didn’t really care for this book as a whole, I did enjoy chapters 6 and 7.

Небольшая книга с интересными выводами об истине и лжи, но слишком много философствований. Тем не менее очень рекомендую почитать любителям разных крайностей, идеологий, сект и фантазий.
