A good look at the big man himself before he crossed the Rubicon...
And the trivia is that the Rubicon, which we all make such a big deal about, was a mere stream on his path to Rome, maybe the border of Italy, but still, really important? It's more the symbolism of taking an army into the country without permission that was the issue there.
But that comes later.
First, we have Caesar's life in Rome.
What a life! And told wonderfully by McCullough, in easy to read prose that makes even Cicero, a venerated name even now, look human, and gives us an insight into humanity's flaws - the rule of the mob, the intimidation tactics used by some, the hypocrisy of those in power (those not in power are perfectly capable of that too, obviously). In short, life shown through a lens, showing the past is indeed another country - they do do things differently there...
An excellent book, a little long, so leave time to read this, and enjoy!
