I am not sure whether this is supposed to be a book for children or for adults. Very simple writing style suitable for children, but flow is too boring them. It doesn’t have any depth to stand out as a book for adults.
Though based on true Red Dog’s life, Bernieres states human characters are fictional except for that of John. So there were enough dimensions to develop those, but none was attempted. Too sad.

I found Red dog a plain, sad, a little funny kind of book. It was the same old classic dog book and found nothing really interesting or exciting about it. In parts was sad and funny and is good for a simple same old read but if you want something exciting or cliff hanging your looking at the wrong book. It was upsetting in certain parts but other from that a mutual feeling throughout.
The book felt me with a disappointed end. A little sad but no real emotions or cliffhangers or anything.
For me i found it a boring, same old kind of book that i would rather no have to read again.

I chose to read this book as it was a suggestion from my sister and i had also just seen the new movie on Red Dog. This book fits under the 'book that has been made into a film' section on the wide reading bingo board.

My favourite quote from this book is "get him out before he demolishes the whole place. I found this to be a relevant quote to Red Dogs character as he was a wild, free and messy dog. I also found this quote interesting because I can relate to the the messy nature of a dog because i have a dog of my own.

My favourite character in the this book is obviously Red Dog as he the highlight and comedy center of this short novel. He seems to get up to many mischievous things such as: Red dog at the beach BBQ, when he steels the juicy steak from the grill.

I learn't from this book that you should never be held at home. You should be out doing things you wish to do, just like Red Dog does/did.

I would recommend this book to children and adults of any ages because anyone can read this book and think about Red Dog in any way of his character...

Very much enjoyed this little fable like story, first book I’ve read by the writer - it came to me at a time I really needed to read a nice story, heart warming and well written. How one life can affect others around them, strangers, enemies, friends - one common element that brings people together. It’s just nice... I hate that word to describe things but it is... it’s nice... NICE I tell you! There I said it.

Red dog was about a group of people who came to Australia to see amazing views plus they have one of the best bbqs in the world which had all the people in it. The story is about people meeting the red dog and seeing how they react to him like when he got shot by a bullet by one of the marksmen. The best bit in the book was when a lady who I can’t remember her name was driving a car and really randomly after one hour of driving past a downhill they entered a world of poison. The dog farted. It was a disaster … I didn’t git it 5 stars because it was a little bit too chatty like “isn’t he gonna die”.

Very quick book to read which was charming. I could tell that the author used different extracts from publications to write this as it didn't come across that well as just a fiction story. His descriptions of Australia and the people were great and of course Red Dog himself was brilliant. Definitely worth a quick read on a winter's afternoon.

This is a remarkable story about a dog who has friends all over Western Australia. He is a free spirit and roams where he pleases making friends wherever he goes.

If you have a dog, if you like dogs or even if you want to read a story about dogs and their human friends, you have to read this book.

Seriously, this is arguably the best dog story I have ever read. It's a bit unusual because it's not a cute, feel good fiction story but the book is a memoir to a real dog. a dog who knew how to enjoy life and friendship on his own terms.

If you like dogs or any other animal fir that matter, read this book. I rarely read any book more than once, but I'm starting right back at the beginning, right now. It is a short book but very enjoyable.

Louis de Bernières' version of the many tales about a dog who traveled freely around Western Australia is beautifully read by David Field in the audio version I listened to. This isn't a romanticized version of a dog who won everyone's heart, though Red Dog did that. Instead, it's a farts-and-all story of a dog too independent to stay with anyone he didn't adore but quite happy to drop in on remote stations, pubs, and traveling vehicles. He did find the love of his life and for a time was as close to settled as the wanderer ever became. When John died, he never really stopped looking for him and traveled far in his quest. He was shot at, poisoned, and attacked, but his widespread friends always took him to the vet and gave him a chance to continue his nomadic ways. De Bernières tells the story in the best tradition of Australian yarn spinning, and David Ford does credit to the writing.

Red Dog
by Louis de Bernieres,

Read my full review. In Australia, Louis de Bernieres heard
about the legend of Red Dog and decided to investigate it. After travelling to Western Australia and meeting countless people who’d known and loved Red Dog, Louis decided to spread this dog’s fame a little further.

Red Dog is a short story with 119 pages based in the Pilbara. A lovable friendly Australian dog makes a name for himself (Red Dog) by travelling all over Western Australia, hitching rides over thousands of miles, settling in places for months at a time, and adopting new friends. The genre of this book is Action-Adventure and Drama.

This book is for those who love dogs, for those who love Australia and most of all for those who like a good solid read.

AUSSIE AUSSIE AUSSIE OI OI OI...

Yay, go Red Dog... I was feeling a little sad and miserable this week and needed something fun to cheer me up so I chose Red Dog by Louis De Bernieres, it was perfect...

I, like pretty much the entire population of Australia was charmed off my feet when the movie Red Dog was released a few years ago, it was such a nice simple story for all Aussies and animal lovers, I never really thought I'd read the book because I'd read Captain Corelli's Mandolin by De Bernieres and found it such a tire however Red Dog is so different and so much better. For starters, you'd never know this book wasn't written by a local Australian person, he gets the dialect and way of life so down pat, it's a true accomplishment really as getting Australia right in movies, books and television is very hard for a non-Australian to do. The story of Red (aka Bluey) is so beautiful, it's a wonderful little tale of a dog who belonged to no one but loved by everyone, made all the more better for me because I knew and was very good friends with a dog just like Red, his name wasn't Red but he was everyone's mate and had the soul of a human, so intelligent.

I'm really happy that I read this book, it was the perfect pick me up... Funny, charming and very Australian... I'll raise a glass tonight for Red :)

This book was fairly okay, it is pretty descriptive and it pours out the emotion that the main character has. The main character is Mick, an small boy that grew up living in a city, but had to move to a country town where he met some extraordinary mates. There were mostly good bits, when Mick gets an education. But one day, there was a cyclone, and that also brought a flood. The next day, Mick finds a half-drowned puppy clinging desperately onto a thin branch just above the level of the water. And from that day on, Mick and Blue, (the pup) seldomly parted. But when Mick’s mother traveled to Melbourne and wanted Mick back, he had to leave his amazing country life and has to go back to live in Melbourne with his mother. This book is a well written one, although the first chapter was confusing, as you get to the end of the book, you get to understand it more. I would recommend these books to sad book lovers of all ages.

Very community focused, which is something we don't get to see in real life these days. Bit boring at times, but it was well written and a very good but sad story. It's adorable how a dog can bring an entire community together, I miss when the world was like this. I suppose only rural Aussie towns can relate to this. I teared up at the end (I did read this a few months after my dog had been put down though -- old age).

I wish John had been there a bit longer, his death was just so sudden?
