Long, engrossing plot with interesting twists and a very few curse words. Pulitzer Prize winner and deservedly so. Couldn’t put it down. Well performed by the narrator. Lots of USA history .

I didn't listen to the audio recording of this, but they didn't have a picture of the book otherwise. This is the novel he won the Pulitzer Prize for. The narrator is a survivor of bone disease and is confined to a wheelchair. He can move his arms independently. He has moved back into his grandparents' farm house and is going through the reams of letters, artwork, and journals of his grandparents (his grandfather was an engineer in the New West and his grandmother a celebrated artist from the Hudson School). His grandparents had started out Easterners with at least his grandmother assuming that they would eventually move back there to be part of the literary circle she had grown to love and be a part of. His grandfather, however, was a self-taught engineer, mapping miles and miles of mines in California, Idaho and elsewhere. This book shows 4 generations of a western family and how Eastern culture shaped them and how they eventually became westerners. Filled with awesome views of the western united states through stegner's beautiful writing. I'm re-reading currently.

A Pulitzer Prize novel written in the 1970s. Wallace Stegner is one of my new favorite authors. This book is reported to be a type of western with much philosophical pros and an amazing description of what it must have been to be a woman in the west, trying to live like a woman from the east. A magnificent book which would be wonderful to read at night with friends or lovers in front of a fireplace. It is not a happy book and it ends with the possibility of the ultimate forgiveness.
