This is by far the worst book I have ever read. I believe that I frequently threw it across the room while reading it, which is a testament to my stubborness because I still finished it.
The main character of the book has an interesting history, but everything becomes convoluted when he changes sexes in the middle of the book (not through a sex change: the character unexplainably becomes a woman). The writing is strong and paints beautiful pictures, but the plot was too twisted for me to enjoy.

I hated this book. Maybe it was because I was forced to read it for a psych class but I don't really thin that's the reason why I dislike this book so much. I didn't enjoy the plotline, I saw the whole point of this novel, but I didn't really care even then. I just disliked everything about this book, the pointless plotline, bland characters and the story just never went anywhere.

This book was very well written, and I adored it until about halfway through, when the male narrator suddenly woke up as a woman, without any warning. Maybe it was just my own inability to adapt, but I felt that the sudden gender change took a lot away from my understanding of the character I had grown to love throughout the course of this book, which ultimately took a lot away from the story itself. Also, one scene near the end was particularly disturbing, but overall, I am glad I read this book. It's not something I can see myself wanting to revisit at a later date, but the experiences of the narrator as a child were priceless, and I thoroughly enjoyed being in his head as he grew and came to understand the world.

Maybe I expected too much after reading (and loving!) "Life of Pi" and reading a summary, but I am disappointed. It is originally and well written, but it doesn't explore gender as much as I hoped it would.
