It's difficult to review a collection of stories that spans an author's entire life, especially when the stories are so rich and varied. So I'll just say what I appreciated: Malamud's deep empathy for humans and their experiences of all kinds; his terribly dark and dry humor, sometimes (but not often) spilling over into morbidity.
The stories - especially those he wrote in the second half of his life - are challenging and sometimes opaque, but they always convey a striving both towards improvement of artistic expression and a groundedness in a sort of humanistic morality. The stories are especially interesting when they examine the occasions when those things are incompatible, and how much he struggled with that.
Highly recommend this collection to lovers of short stories.
