This book is not a novel but a reference book so to speak for people in the program of Alcoholics Anonymous - the 12 steps and 12 traditions are sacred to those in the program. I was in the program of Al-anon for 22 years - a program for those that love alcoholics. My mother was an alcoholic but she was 8 years sober before she died and they were wonderful years for both of us. This book is a bit antiquated because it was written many years ago. But if you can get past that you can begin to embrace the spiritual beauty of the tenets that the book is trying to say. Without going the dramatic route ,, the program of Alcoholics Anonymous and Al-anon saved my life ,,, it gave me my mother back if only for a short time but what a wonderful time it was.
I do want to say one last thing ,,, i have been reading some reviews of this book ,,, they are mentioning the spiritual quality of the book - while that is true in my estimation i wanted to clarify something (and please this is strictly my opinion) however the AA and Al-anon programs are not religious in nature ,,,, they talk about a higher power so it can be construed as churchy but i can assure you it is not, However in my humble opinion -- if you are looking for God (whom i call my higher power) he is in those rooms.
