A genius idea for a story that could have been deep and meaningful in more than a 'I think we can get a screenplay out of this' way. That's not to say it wasn't enjoyable, it was, very, but it isn't literature. The characters are cheesy and one dimensional and appear and disappear in not very realistic ways throughout the book. The politics are none to subtle either. But, it was a good and undemanding read and I've rounded up the 3.5 stars to a 4.

Usually if I enjoy a book on a fairly shallow level, one where I'm not invested emotionally and will be upset if the director has a different vision from me, I can't wait to see the film. But in this case, I've read the book, it's enough, I don't think I would ever reread it either.

Enjoy it when you want something undemanding, a nice blockbuster type of book set in exotic climes, but don't expect it to live up to the hype, it's just not that good.

اوایل کتاب که شروعش کردم، حدود پنجاه صفحه‌ی اول، با خودم گفتم چه چیز شگفت‌انگیزی ممکنه در مورد این کتاب وجود داشته باشه؟ خب خوبه، ولی معمولی، خاص نیست اصلا. به خوندنم ادامه دادم، خوندم، خوندم و میخکوب شدم‌! خالد حسینی با کتاب به ظاهر ساده‌ی بادبادک‌بازش منو مجذوب کرد.
داستان از زبان اول شخص، راوی داستان امیر، بیان می‌شه. تصویری که خالد حسینی از زبان امیر برای ما از افغانستان مجسم می‌کنه، بر خلاف چیزی که بقیه گفتن برام تصویری باشکوه نبود، بلکه یه زندگی ساده رو توصیف می‌کرد که آدم‌ها از حداقل نیازهای انسانی با وجود همه‌ی ضعف‌های فرهنگی برخوردار بودن. مصائب جنگ در قالب داستان به نحوی عالی به تصویر کشیده شده بود و آدم رو منقلب می‌کرد. همین‌ها رمان بادبادک‌باز رو از نظر اجتماعی و تاریخی هم باارزش می‌کنه.
نثر کتاب و ترجمه‌ی اون بسیار ساده و روونه، جوری که آدم رو همراه خودش می‌بره... این روونی در حدی هست که برای قلم خالد حسینی یه امتیاز محسوب می‌شه.
با اینکه من زود با توصیف‌ها خسته می‌شم، به ندرت حین خوندن کتاب، احساس خستگی یا اضافی بودن توصیفات رو داشتم.
شخصیت‌های کتاب، از افراد ریز و درشت، اصلی یا حاشیه‌ای، همگی عالی بهشون پرداخته شده بود و تمامی شخصیت‌های کتاب، حتی مثلا گدایی که یکی دو صفحه تو کتاب حضور داره، هویت دارن و کاملا قابل لمس بودن که این باعث می‌شد واقعا عاشق قلم خالد حسینی بشم، چون شخصیت‌پردازی برای من تو جذابیت کتاب جز مهم‌ترین عوامله.
در نهایت، داستان فوق‌العاده پرکشش، تلخ اما رشد دهنده بود. خیلی چیزها از این کتاب یاد گرفتم و تاثیر زیادی رو جهان‌بینیم داشت که به تک‌تک بغض‌ها و خشم‌هایی که تجربه کردم می‌ارزید. روند داستان اصلا برای من تکراری نشد و افت و خیزهاش جالب‌ترشم می‌کرد. این داستان کاملا شرقی که از نظر فرهنگی به ما نزدیک بود، یک جاهایی شاید یه کم افراطی دنیا دار مکافات بودن رو نشون می‌داد، اما این اصلا از ارزش داستان کم نمی‌کرد.
به طور کلی، بر خلاف انتظارم، بادبادک‌باز جز بهترین کتاب‌های درامی هست که تا حالا خوندم و بی‌نهایت ازش آموختم و در نتیجه بهش مدیونم. انسجام و پختگی قلم نویسنده رو تحسین می‌کنم.

4 to 4.5 (I need half stars!)

This was a very interesting and well written story of Afghanistan and how it has changed over the last 50 years or so. It was fascinating to get the impression of things from someone who lived through it. While a fictional story, it is obvious that the author drew from his own experiences.

In America, we get an impression of how things are/were through the media and word of mouth. Without actually doing research or talking to someone who who lived through it, you really don't get the big picture.

If you like historical fiction, stories from the middle east, and/or father/son/family stories then this is a book not to be missed!

Guilt
The Kite Runner is emotional and immersive, a story that is amplified with its spotlight on society and culture within Afganistan - both past and present. The story relates to the lives of two boys, Amir and Hassan, growing up in Kabul and narrated through the eyes of Amir. There are major societal and lifestyle differences between them but it is the character and principles of the two boys that defines this literary classic. Amir is the son of a rich man, he is educated, refined, and most importantly for social standing, part of the Sunni ruling class. Hassan is the son of the household servant and is illiterate, physically robust, but unfortunately for him, part of the Shia lower class. At a young age, the two boys probably saw each other as play friends, rather than the additional baggage or benefits their class positions bestow on them. However, as children grow up they inherently know where power resides and it doesn't take long for Amir to recognise his family's dominance and Hassan's family servitude.

Following an incident where Hassan suffers physically and psychologically in protecting Amir, it leaves Amir with an unshakeable sense of guilt and culpability that manifests itself in a resentful disposition towards Hassan. Hassan suffers twice for being a better friend. The class system plays its part but the cowardice of Amir clings to his memories and will haunt him throughout his life. The writing flows wonderfully and the story is so imperceptibly built to capture emotions and our sentiments of injustice.

Years after Amir immigrated to the United States he returns with the hope of righting some of these wrongs and seeking redemption with Hassan. Since Amir was last in Afghanistan the Taliban are now in control of the state - including government and religion. The country Amir knew now feels alien as he experiences the emotional horrors and fear of life under the Taliban. They are also dangerous times where the outward display of appearance and loyalty are crucial not to fall foul of the authorities.

This is a really superb book on so many levels – the history, location, religion, social culture, character interaction and it’s ultimately dealing with human emotions of friendship and guilt. I would highly recommend reading this book. In fact, it's a must-read!

I read this novel five years ago and I confess, at that time, It was my best read for some time.

I enjoyed this book. Amir the narrator of the novel has narrated it beautifully. The sense of insecurity in the father-son relation has been woven nicely and the sense of redemption and guilt is the main theme in the psyche of the narrator. I found the entire story heart wrenching and the scenes and plot around the friendship of two boys from two different and opposite strata of the society were perfectly written and composed by Khaled. Novel's depiction is full of warmth and humor.

Being the first work of Khaled, I admire his way of writing and the way he advances his story.
Don't be surprised, If you find your eyes wet sometimes while turning some of the pages of the kite runner... !!

and then...

“There is a way to be good again...”

Though at times, somewhere in between, I found it lacking in pace still the entire plot was engaging. The most interesting part of the story for me was the friendship portrayal of Aamir and Hassan. It was written with all tenderness and innocence of childhood.

"Though they both climbed the poplar trees together... ... On the south end of the garden, in the shadows of a loquat tree, Hassan lived alone without him in the servant quarters."

”For you, a thousand times over.”

We are currently experiencing some expressional difficulties.



Should be back in business once emotions are in full functioning mode.

شاهکار بود کتاب . 
بعد از خوندن کور سرخی از عالیه عطایی فکر کردم چقدر از فرهنگ و درد کشور همسایه مون کم میدونم و این کتاب رو خریدم.
قدری توصیفات خالد حسینی قشنگ و کامل بود که انگار با امیر و حسن توی کابل توی اون کوچه پس کوچه ها بادبادک بازی کردم، بچگی کردم‌ و درد کشیدم. 
چقدر به امیر حسودی کردم برای داشتن حسن کنارش و چقدر اشک ریختم برای حسن.
 هر خط خوندنش مثل چرخوندن چاغو توی جیگرم بود.
ترجمه زیبا گنجی و پریسا سلیمان زاده بی نقص بود.

Five stars for a stunning book where remorse, guilt, injustice, prejudice, and forgiveness play a significant part in the heart-breaking stories of Amir, son of Baba, and Hassan, son of Rahim Aga, a loyal friend and servant to the Amir’s father, set against the backdrop of some of Afghanistan’s most turbulent years.

'The Kite Runner' is an unforgettable story about two young boys whose lives are shaped by the regrettable decisions taken, inaction and cowardice that strains their relationship and ultimately tears them apart. It is also a story that signifies the power of voice and the devastating consequences of not using it when the time and cause requires it. Yet is also a tender story that demonstrates forgiveness, the power of love, and the importance of confronting the lies and injustices around us. A truly sensational story that is told with sentiment, honesty and with a powerful message.

The Plot

Amir and Hassan are friends, Amir “..was a Pashtun and Hassan was a Hazara, Amir was Sunni and he was Shi’a, and nothing was ever going to change that” However, the two boys shared a love of kite flying and won competitions and Hassan the title of best ‘Kite Runner’. Yet the two boys could not deny their racial differences as Hassan was forced to sit on the side lines while Amir played with other Sunni friends. Behind closed doors and away from probing eyes they were devoted friends until an evil act of depravity charts the boys on different courses.

As Amir struggles to forgive himself for inaction and cowardice, he recalls “.. I had one last chance to make a decision. One. In the end, I ran. I ran because I was a coward”

The story continues along two different paths until Amir, despite his successes in America, is forced to confront the ugly past with a twist that he could predict as the secrets hidden from him are revealed.

Review and Comments

A heart felt and touching story that shines a light on the injustices, suffering, and racial disparities felt across the world, without being judgemental. A story that needed to be told and a book that should be read. However, it was the forgiveness in the book that pulled on my heart strings just as much.

I love books that deliver strong messages but don’t lecture or patronise or seek to influence the reader politically or socially. It is up to the reader to take from these stories what they will and shape their own opinions. Yet they do help us understand different perspectives, the hardship of people displaced and suffering that comes with unrest and for that reason I adored ‘The Kite Runner’.

The writing style is superb, and I particularly loved the words and teachings of the wise men, and there is no shortage of them in this narrative. One of my standout quotes from this beautiful book is
“…there is only one sin, only one. And that is theft. Every other sin is a variation of theft. Do you understand that?” …. “When you kill a man, you steal a life,” Baba said. “You steal his wife’s right to a husband, rob his children of a father. When you tell a lie, you steal someone’s right to the truth. When you cheat, you steal the right to fairness. Do you see?”

Sad, powerful, and poignant, yet beautiful and tender in parts as the power of voice reminds us of when we should use it. I would give this book 6 stars if I could. Sensational.

وهكذا ياصديقي... فرقتنا اﻷيام...قبل أن أودعك وداعا تستحقه...قبل أن أقول لك كل ما نويت قوله. ليتني ألقاك لحظة حتى أشكرك على أثرك الذي لن ينمحي من وجداني، حتى أعتذر لك أنني لم أكن الصديق الذي كنته أنت...فاغفر لي ياصديقي.

اجترح خالد حسيني هذه القصة العاطفية. نعم أظنها عاطفية في المقام اﻷول. مايبقي القارئ مستمرا ومايجعله يشيد بها هي سلسلة المواقف المؤثرة. وأرى أن الكاتب قد أفلح بملامسة عدة أوتار لابد ﻷي قارئ أن يجد أحدها أو جميعها حساسا: فقدان الوطن، فقدان الصديق، علاقة اﻹبن بأبيه، كذلك عقدة الذنب، والسعي للتكفير.

تفتتح الرواية على قصة الطفلين وصداقتهما في كابول ماقبل اﻹحتلال السوفيتي، صور ملونة عن اﻷماكن والأحداث واﻷنشطة المعتادة آنذاك. هذا برأي الجزء اﻷجمل من الرواية، فهو يشع ببهاء شخصية حسن، وقوة شخصية اﻷب. كما يأخذك دون جواز سفر إلى أكثر أيام أفغانستان هدوءا واستقرارا. اعتقدت في هذا الجزء أن الكتاب سينتهي بتقييم ذي خمسة نجوم.

أما المرحلة الثانية من الرواية فتدور أحداثها في أمريكا وسط الجالية اﻷفغانية هناك. بضعة انتقادات للمجتمع اﻷفغاني، جمالية تبادل اﻷدوار بين اﻷب وابنه، وقصة غرام أمير بثريا. يبهت بريق الرواية هنا حيث تحمل ملامح مشتركة مع العديد من الحكايات العربية عن حياة اﻷقليات في المهجر.

نصل إلى الشطر اﻷخير من الرواية وهو مايستدعي التشمير عن الساعدين والحديث بجدية. لقد آليت على نفسي ألا أقيم عملا أدبيا وفقا لإيديولوجيته، أو للجرعة الجنسية المقدمة في طياته. لذا فانتقادي لهذا الجزء ماهو إلا نظرة فنية لعمل أدبي. أضف إلى ذلك أنني لست من المتحمسين، أو حتى المتعاطفين مع طالبان. أنما أنا عدو للتسطيح، والدعاية المباشرة، سواء داعمة، أم مضادة.

يتفرغ الكاتب لنقد حكم طالبان في الجزء الذي يعود فيه بطل الرواية إلى أفغانستان، وهذا حق مشروع ﻷي كاتب. غير أن الحبكة تتحول إلى شريط أسود من الحكايات الفظيعة عن أعضاء طالبان. ليس هناك تحليل، أو نقاش من عدة زوايا. كل مايفعله الطالبان هو شر مستطير إلى درجة أنهم يمكن أن يقتلونك إذا رفعت عينيك في أعينهم. وعلى صعيد آخر، ليس هناك أحد يناصر طالبان: لا شيعة ولا سنة ولا متدينين ولا متعصبين ولا متسولين...الكل يلعنهم ويتمنى زوالهم. تقديم كل هذا العدد من الشخصيات بصورة الخبث المجسد غير مقنع وفيه قدر كبير من التعبئة. يقول مولان في كتابه عن نقد الرواية (2006) :"يفضل أغلب الكتاب إضفاء حوافز معقدة على كل شخصية. فأن يكون لديك شخصية "شريرة" صرفة- كما يقتضي التعبير الطفولي- هو مخاطرة بتقديم شخصية كاريكاتورية محضة".

عندك مشهد الرجم على سبيل المثال، أجده مفتعلا جدا. شخص "ستايل" يرتدي النظارات الشمسية ينزل للقيام بالرجم وسط تحايا حارة من الجماهير-الذي لايحب أحد منهم طالبان. ركز معي قليلا تجد الكاتب قدم الجميع بصورة إنسانية. على سبيل المثال، السفيراﻷمريكي الصلف، اتضح انه يعاني من حزن عميق. أحد المحتلين السوفييت أنقذ أفغانية من اﻹغتصاب على يد أحد زملائه، وحتى من حاول اﻹغتصاب، تم تبرير فعلته بأنه غر، وأنه تحت مفعول المخدر. أما الطالبان، فكان لهم بعد واحد على طول الخط. انتقد من شئت ولكن قدم صورة أدبية عميقة. قارن، عزيزي القارئ، تقديم حسيني للطالبان،و محمد المنسي قنديل للعسكر في (قمر على سمرقند)، كلا التقديمين سطحي وتعبوي. على النقيض، خذ الطرح المتزن للبرغوثي بخصوص الإسرائليين في (رأيت رام الله)، و صورة السلطان قابوس في (وردة) لصنع الله إبراهيم، وهو اليساري العتيد.

هناك أيضا الإشارة إلى أحمد شاه مسعود على أنه "بطل"، ووصف دستم بأنه "أمير حرب". كلاهما من أطراف الصراع الدامي. لكن مثل تلك اﻹشارات تنبئك عن توجهات الكاتب. لا أعتب على حسيني عدم انتقاد الدور اﻷمريكي في الحروب، فلعل ذلك ليس مما يمكن تقديمه في سياق الرواية.

في ذلك الجزء أيضا، تناسلت الصدف غير المنطقية، بصورة تجعلك تبحث عن أقرب مسدس لتختصر هذا العذاب. ثم هناك التحدي اﻷرعن الذي يخاطر فيه عاصف بالتازل عن كل شي في مواجهة ليس مضطرا لها أساسا. باختصار هذا القسم من الرواية يذكرك بأفلام أميتاب في الثمانينيات حيث اﻷشخاص السيئون يجلدون ظهور العامة دون مسوغ بينما يلعق الشرير السكين الملطخ بالدم منتشيا، ولا ينفك عن القهقة دونما سبب، في الحقيقة السبب هو أن اﻷشرار يفعلون ذلك دائما.

في تقديري، الرواية تستحق القراءة لما فيها من قصص مؤثرة ومقاصد نبيلة. كل ماستحتاجه، قارئ الرواية، هو ليمونة تعصرها على الجزء اﻷخير من الكتاب.

Loving story and dark at the same time.
Interesting to read about culture and what happened to the country.
Thought it was not my book, but I enjoyed it and read through it pretty quickly.

I read this book for the Goodreads' Diversity in All Forms! Book Club. I am so glad the members choose this for the Countries and Territories: Afghanistan. The whole time I was reading this book I thought it was a true story. Turns out that this book is fiction and not about the author's life... oops. I enjoyed the book a lot. It talked about many different issues: immigration, adoption for Afghanistan, Hazaras, Pastuns, Afghan monarchy, sexism and so much more. However, this book wasn't a 5 star book for me because I felt like it jumped around a lot and at times it was hard to follow. Though, ultimately I really enjoyed the book and my eyes were opened to a lot of different issues. One topic that was discussed in this book that I would love to learn wayyyy more about is adopting from Afghanistan.

ملحمة أدبية بل ملحمة شاعرية - لو أردت الدقة -.
ربما قرأتَ ما يجعلك تشعر بالدفء بالغضب بالندم بالحزن بالحيرة بالراحة بالبغض بالأمل و لكن أن تجد كل تلك المشاعر في رواية واحدة فأنت أمام رواية من طرازٍ فريد.

القصة تحلق بوجدانك و تحمل من معاني القلوب كثيرا.
تتحدث القصة عن بطلين في مرحلتين عمريتين و هما اطفال و حينما يبلغون , أمير و حسن - رغم اختلاف منزلتهما الاجتماعية - فهما صديقان منذ نعومة اظافرهما , تتفرق بهما السبل الي أن تتقاطع مرة أخرى مستقبلا , في ظل ظروف أفغانستان تعيش معهما تفاصيل كثيرة من حياة كل منهما تضحك معهما تبكي معهما الي أن تصير صديقهما الثالث .

تأثّرت لها و بها لتدرك علي وجه اليقين أن من ألّفها لم يكتبها فقط بل عاشها قبل ذلك.
تخرج منها بقلب قد انفطر و التأم ثم انفطر و التأم فلا تدرى ما شعورك عندما تنهيها ربما فقط بالرضا.

تتفاجأ أنها اول رواية لكاتبها لتدرك بعد ذلك أن جزءا منها عاشه بالفعل - من هروب و خوف و رهبة و رغبة - فتدرك سر نجاحها ، تلك المشاعر الجياشة الصادقة.

ترجمة إيهاب عبد الحميد رائعة بكل ما تحمله الكلمة من معني
فتجده ترجم الجملة الرائعة " for you, over a thousand times more"
إلي " من أجلك ألفُ مرةٍ و مرةٍ" فكانت أكثر نبلاً و جمالاً.

لها فيلم , و لكن لا مقارنة بينهما حقيقة .
  

من أجمل و أشعر ما قرأتُ بلا شك.
