Death Note, Vol. 3: Hard Run (Death Note, #3), Tsugumi Ohba
In order to keep working, Light hides a LCD Mini Television in a bag of chips to see criminals while he writes their names acting as if he is studying.
L decides to remove the cameras, but still suspects Light as a Kira. Some time later, Light enters into the Toho University, where he meets L, who reveals his own identity in order to study Light's reactions.
L reveals to Light that he suspects he is Kira, which forces Light to ally with him to prove he is innocent. Soon the channel Sakura TV airs a video from a person with Kira's powers telling people to stop bothering Kira by killing the anti-Kira commentators.
Soichiro manages to enter Sakura TV's building with an armored car without being seen, and stops the broadcast. Light notes that the one who made the tapes is an ally for him and that has obtained the shinigami's eyes, allowing him to see anybody's real name and lifespan.
After realizing there is another Kira, L requests Light to join them to stop the second Kira. Ohba said that he often struggled while selecting chapter names, but for chapters 15 through 23 he had the titles selected early; he said that he was "on a roll" during that time. ...

I really enjoy the battle of wit and will between Light and L., now pumped up a little with the two of them meeting face to face. A new character, another human with a Death Note, is introduced towards the end, somebody who did accept the shinigami eyes. Interested to see where this is going, especially since Light is starting to show some cracks around the edges.
The second volume ends with Raito finding out that he was under surveillance due to L’s orders. Which meant he couldn’t directly write in the Death Note as he was sure to be seen by one of the 64(!) cameras placed in his room. L is pulling the net around Raito but there is a lot more to come. Raito doesn’t give up easily. He devises a brilliant plan to fool L and his own father. And Kira strikes again. But there is no suspicious activity that can connect Raito to the murders. Which should mean that Raito was innocent. But, you see, L has other ideas. Even though his plans keep failing, he still has an idea about the identity of Kira. So he decides to keep a tab on Raito himself.
The First Meeting:
Raito goes to give his entrance exam for college. While he is writing his exam, his attention is attracted by the invigilator speaking to a young man who is sitting while huddling his knees together. Who is it? L, of course! And that’s how L and Raito meet for the very first time. This is THE moment in the entire series up to this point and the buildup is pretty amazing.
The two later give the speech in Touou University as they have both achieved perfect scores in the examination. L introduces himself to Raito and they become “friends”. There is no friendship there as both of them are trying to gauge the other’s next move and thoughts. This tension between the principle characters is the reason why Death Note is such a hit with people. The second volume didn’t have much of it but this volume has oodles of this clash between L and Raito. And I’m probably going to have high blood pressure and shortness of breath by the end of this series.
Exchange of Ideas:
L and Raito have a “friendly” match of Tennis and this match gives the two an impression of each other. Both are trying to figure out who the other really is. While Raito is wondering about L’s identity, L is trying to profile Raito according to Kira’s mannerisms. This leads up to a lengthy discussion about Kira and ever confident Raito starts to lose some of his confidence under L’s gaze but makes a quick recovery. This battle of wits is something to behold. (What are you still waiting for? Read this book right now!)
Family Emergency:
The discussion is cut short as Raito gets news of a family emergency. I can’t elaborate for fear of putting a spoiler. But this is probably going to blow your mind as it did mine. You have been warned.
Kira Makes An Appearance:
Kira sends some tapes to a TV channel stating his demands. He asks them to broadcast the tapes according to the instructions he’s given. He wishes the police to cooperate with him and states that if they don’t do so, they’ll have to face the consequences. Raito is seen laughing fearlessly while the broadcast happens.
Another Kira?
Revelation time! Is there another Kira out there? And who is he? There is another Shinigami that has fallen to the human world and Raito is the only person who knows about it. He decides to use this information to his advantage. Raito makes up his mind to join the team of investigators to keep an eye on L and the other Kira. The second Kira is a... woman?

In the final parts I tried to be better about taking the time to look at the graphics as well as reading the story as I had noticed my tendency to just read the text and speach bubbles I was so engrossed in what was happening I wanted to know more, I needed to know more.. xD
I am enjoying myself SO, so much, I feel like a broken record saying it over and over again, but I really do :-) And I finished this in time to go to the library today, too, I'm considering if I should just check out the rest of the series while I'm there, if they have them xD
And I'm still terrible at reviews, I'm sorry... xD
Anywhoddle... I am quite loving this, I recommend it, highly, I think it's a good place to start if you have no prior experience with manga, like me :-) I plan to put the Black Edition of these, that are available from BookDepository on my christmas wishlist O:)
Yet again, another stellar installment of the Death Note series!
This third volume felt more action-packed than its predecessors. The good/bad binaries became even more muddied and the the art work turned darker in tone to accommodate it. It felt like this volume marked a shift in the series, where from here on out we have entered more into the world of the psychological thriller. Again, there were many levels to this and many genres were converged on, but it primarily had a crime-based theme. This was enhanced by the increasing focus on the police detectives and the mysterious L, who are attempting to solve the case of the homicidal maniac murdering both convicted criminals and the police members attempting to trap him. This insight into the two conflicting sides of the case make this compelling reading!
In true Death Note style, this has ended on a cliffhanger that is making it impossible for me to stop now! I am a true convert into the Manga world.
