Vienas geriausių vaikų literatūros klasikos kūrinių, privertusių nubraukti ne vieną ašarą. Tai istorija apie pamesto vaiko išgyvenimus, jo neišsipildžiusias svajones, tikrą ir gilią suaugusiojo meilės galią.

,,Kartais šiame pasaulyje mums pasiseka, ir tada mes patenkinti sakom: ,,Na, va, pagaliau – laiminga pabaiga. Taip ir turi būti.“ Tarsi gyvenimas privalėtų mums duoti visokio gerumo. (...) Tačiau visą gyvenimą tikėtis gero – būtų tik savęs apgaudinėjimas. Gerumo būna nedaug, jis nekrinta iš dangaus.“

به نظر من کاترین پترسون واقعا نویسنده خوبیه. البته این دومین کتابیه که ازش خوندم، ولی به هر حال کاملا من رو مجاب کرده که سراغ کارهای دیگه‌ش هم برم و فعلا همین کافیه.
این کتاب رو دوست داشتم. فکر کنم یکی از معدود کتاب‌های نوجوانی بود که من بزرگترهاش رو بیشتر از بچه‌هاش دوست داشتم. شخصیت اصلی اول کار خیلی رومخ بود، ولی کم‌کم خودش رو تو دل آدم جا می‌کرد. روند رشدش رو می‌دیدی و متوجه می‌شدی که چرا اولش طوری رفتار می‌کرده که خیلی جالب نبوده.
فکر می‌کنم بزرگترین ضعف کتاب‌، ظرفیت‌های ازدست‌رفته‌ش بود. شخصیت‌هایی مثل معلم گیلی یا اون دختره اگنس... اول که سروکله‌شون پیدا شد من حس کردم قراره بار داستان و تغییر شخصیت اصلی و همه‌چیز رو به دوش بکشن، ولی در واقع عملا هیچ تاثیری در پیشبرد داستان نداشتن. در مقابل شخصیت‌هایی مثل ویلیام‌ارنست و اون آقای پیری که اسمش رو یادم نیست رو داریم که واقعا در داستان نقش مهمی داشتن.
خلاصه که از خواندنش لذت بردم. یک ستاره‌ی اضافه هم برای تجربه باهم‌خوانی.

I thought that sounded terrible...another story about a brat that I'm going to be emotionally manipulated into loving. But I did love her - probably because I realized I am a lot like her - one of those people looking for a happy ending and tempted to think that life will be better when...

My dad used to quip "Life sucks, then you die." but I think I'd have been better served with Trotter's wise words: "Life ain't supposed to be nothing, 'cept maybe tough...you just fool yourself if you expect good things all the time. They ain't what's regular - don't nobody owe 'em to you."

"If life is so bad how come you're so happy?"

"Did I say bad? I said it was tough. Nothing to make you happy like doing good on a tough job, now is there?"

Gilly is an unlikable kid. She is in foster care, and wants to escape. She needs love, but she fights against everything in her life.
