هذا كتاب مكتوب بحب وروقان، كتبه صاحبه وليس في عقله القاريء!، نعم ... فأفضل ما يكتب هو ما يكتبه صاحبه وهو في حالة ذوبان تام مع نفسه وفي نفسه، يحاول أن يفهم ويقنع نفسه بأبسط الطرق والوسائل ويطرح على نفسه الكثير من الإشكاليات التي قد لا يطرحها القاريء أصلا!


طوال الوقت ومنذ أن كنت صغيرا لدي شغف لمعرفة آلية عمل الكهرباء ، وكل ما درسته لم يشف غليلي ولم يفهمني حتى ظننت أنني غبيا.

هذا الكتاب استطاع أن يأخذ بيدي لبداية الطريق ، أن يعلمني بأبسط الطرق آلية عمل الكهرباء، والتلغراف والتليفون والراديو والرادار والحاسوب في سرد حميمي مزج فيه الكاتب ما بين المذكرات والعلم والقصص الحربية المثيرة، والعلاقات الإنسانية الغريبة، ليخرج لنا هذا الكتاب.


منذ سنوات، وبعد تخرجي من كلية الصيدلة ، كان لدي شغف لدراسة علم وظائف الاعضاء(الفسيولوجيا) وبالفعل بدأت بشكل منفرد وذاتي الدراسة، لاكتشف أنني أدرس الكهرباء لا الفسيولوجيا، وأن جسم الانسان ما هو إلا كون كهربائي مصغر تتسارع فيه النبضات الكهربية حرفيا عبر الأعصاب، ناقلة الإشارات الكهربية العصبية من وإلى المخ، وبالرغم من أنني لم أتم دراسة علم وظائف الأعضاء كاملا، إلا أنني درست مقدمته دراسة وافية، والتي كانت مقدمة كهربائية بامتياز، وهو ما ذكرني به الفصل الأخير من هذا الكتاب.


كتاب علمي وممتع في نفس الوقت، وقلما هي الكتب التي على هذه الشاكلة.

I didn't realize this was an abridgment; I'm loath to select those since I don't want to miss out on everything the author wanted to communicate.

This was an OK book about electricity, but it wound up going somewhat far afield by the end, and five days on, I can't remember what the deviation was. Mr. Bodanis did touch upon the impact of Thomas Alva Edison in electrifying the nation and the world, but I felt that "The Last Days of Night" handled it better.

My rough criterion for non-fiction books is whether I'd really like to purchase the book itself (as I am reading from the public library) to have as a return-to reference. "Electric Universe" does not make that cut.

This book was short and informative to a point until when I realized there was no mention of Tesla in a book that talks about Electricity. It was surprising because Author mentions Edison and his discoveries.

He talks about a lot of important figures from the history but fails to mention the contribution of Quantum Theory (and people associated with them) in understanding electricity. An average piece of work at best.

Overall a very simplified description of how electricity works and the people behind it. some very interesting information about radar and the war efforts. however this book and the analogies it uses are so simplistic and in the case of semiconductors just blatantly wrong and misleading.

I had no idea of how electricity had covered so many aspects of our life. The presentation was orderly, easy to understand, and exciting. I would recommend this book to any young person who is interested in pursuing a career in science. I am 80-years-old and now wish I went into science when I was young. Keep up that great writing, David.

Boken får fyra stjärnor dels för att författaren nästan lyckas göra ämnet till en spänningsroman, dels för att vara såpass bred (boken slutar med neuroelektricitet) samt att författaren också lyckas beskriva personerna bakom upptäckterna. Men emellanåt är den dåligt skriven och eller dåligt översatt. För den som vill bli mer kunnig om det fysikaliska fenomenet elektricitet endast bör läsa en annan bok.

كتاب ممتع و مفيد، ينير العقول، فيه رحلة عن تطور استخدام الكهرباء خلال المائتين سنة الماضيتين، و أجمل ما فيه هو أنه يؤكد على أهمية المثاربة و الطموح و ان الحضارة البشرية هي ثمرة جهود متواصلة لمئات السنين؛ فكل عالم استفاد ممن سبقوه و أفاد من لحقوه، ولولا هذا لكان وضعا اقل بكثير مما هو عليه الآن، و كما قيل من قبل كرد على سؤال : لماذا الانسان هو افضل المخلوقات على وجه الأرض؟ و كانت الاجابة لأنه الكائن الوحيد الذي له تاريخ

Allmänbildning för ingenjörsstudenten.

Pros: kortfattad, lättförståelig, anekdottung
Cons: Nikola Tesla ej nämnd, ganska mycket info om elektriciteten i människokroppen SNARK (ingen ingenjör värd namnet har väl någonsin brytt sig om en så banal sak som människans fysik?).

Denna bok rekommenderas till alla som har eller kommer läsa fysik vid högre utbildning. Om man läser denna bok har man flera år av fun-facts och lättförståeliga spännnande naturvetenskapliga anekdoter att berätta såväl till lekmän som jämnlikar.

Fun facts och anekdoter att komma ihåg:
- Watt den uttråkade meterologen som uppfann radarn av tristess och räddade England från tysken
- Alexander Bell som uppfann telefonen PGA. Kärlek.
- Tjuv-Edison (och hur lampor släktes i hans ära)
- Hur en transistor funkar
- någonting om Faraday och Maxwell som jag inte minns...
- Englands SJUKA bombning med både konfetti och brandbomber över Hamburgs arbetarkvarter.
- En stackars radioamatörs medverkan i ninjaräden för att sno en radar från tysken.
- Vad Ampere, Volt och Watt egentligen är och hur namnen uppkom.

An extremely useful and fascinating history outlining the discovery of how electricity works and the men (it was men) who figured out how to harness its power. Watt, Volta, Ampere, Bell, Hertz, Morse and Faraday all get their moments to shine like an Edison bulb while less well remembered heroes who deserve to be household names including Joseph (Telegraph) Henry, Cyrus (Transatlantic Cable) Field and Robert Watson (Radar) Watt - yes, a direct descendant of the kettle lid observer - get dedicated chapters describing their own triumphs and disasters. There’s a useful primer on nerve conduction and a tribute to the work of Alan Turing for whom the semi-conductors of Brattain and Bardeen’s triumph in Silicon Valley came a few years too late.
The notes at the end add more detail and the recommended further reading list is excellent.
I too am not sure why Tesla doesn’t merit a mention - it was probably an accidental Ohmission.

Well, this was a bit surprising of a read. Here I assumed that I was taking a break from history to get into some science and instead I’m reading about the history of notorious inventors. It’s simple read, interesting, and really for people who want to review some key scientists that contributed to our understand of electricity today. I was surprised by the lack of Tesla as he was preached almost religiously in university. It was overall it was fairly enjoyable.

This book, winner of the Samuel Johnson Non-Fiction prize, is a fantastic introduction to the history of electricity and the effect it has on our modern day lives.

Bodanis covers everything from electromagnetism to the Telegraph (and subsequently wireless communication), to electric lighting, computers and even how electrical impulses enables the circulation of blood within the body.

What makes this book so enjoyable, is Bodanis' real gift for explaining science in simple and easy to understand language, often with the use of the perfectly apt metaphor. A joy to read.

Занятная книжка, но где же Тесла?! Ни одного упоминания об этом изобретателе.
