I got this because American Gods is a favorite of mine.
Sadly they don't resemble each other except by the premise of transplanted gods coming to life.
I found this one bland and hard to finish. I like Gaiman's style but even that felt lacking here.
I'm sure my opinion will not be that of many, but it is what it is.

বেটা রিডার হবার সুবিধার্থে আগেই পড়া হয়েছিল আমেরিকান গডস খ্যাত নিল গেইম্যানের 'আনানসি বয়েজ', বইটি অনুবাদ করেছেন অনুবাদক মোঃ ফুয়াদ আল ফিদাহ। বইটি অফিসিয়াল অনুমোদন প্রাপ্ত এবং সেপ্টেম্বরে ইন শা আল্লাহ পাবলিশ হওয়ার কথা বিবলিওফাইল প্রকাশনী থেকে।

এর আগে নিল গেইম্যানের কোন বই পড়া হয়নি। একটা ছোট গল্প পড়া হয়েছিল শুধু, সেই হিসেবে লেখকের প্রথম কোন বই পড়লাম। আমি সাধারণত বই পড়ার আগে গল্প সংক্ষেপ পড়ে নেই, কিন্তু এই বইটা পড়ার ক্ষেত্রে কোন কিছু না দেখেই পড়া শুরু করি, লেখকের কোন বই সম্পর্কে খুব একটা ধারণা না থাকার কারণে এই বইটা নিয়ে কোন রকম এক্সপেকটেশন ছিলনা। কিন্তু বইটা আমার অনেক বেশি ভালো লেগেছে। এই বই অনেক ভালো লেগেছে জানানোর পর শুনলাম আমেরিকান গডস আনানসি বয়েজের তুলনায় আরো বেশি দুর্দান্ত। যদিও বইটা আমেরিকান গডস সিরিজের বই, কিন্তু সম্পূর্ণ আলাদা কাহিনী। আমেরিকান গডস না পড়েই বইটা কোনপ্রকার সমস্যা ছাড়াই পড়া যাবে। যাদের মিথলজি নিয়ে আগ্রহ আছে তাদের আরো ভালো লাগবে বইটা পড়ে।

ভূমিকাতে যখন দেখেছি নিল গেইম্যান লেখক পি.জি উডহাউজ কে ধন্যবাদ জানিয়েছেন, তখনই একটু আশাবাদী হয়েছিলাম একটা ব্যাপারে এবং পড়ার সময় লেখক ঐ ব্যাপারে সবটুকুই আশা পূরণ করেছেন, উনার সেন্স অব হিউমার যথেষ্ট ভালো তা বুঝানোর মাধ্যমে। গল্পটা পড়তে গিয়ে অনেক জায়গায় হাসতে বাধ্য হয়েছি। মোটকু চার্লি চরিত্রটা অনেক ভালো লেগেছে। স্পাইডার মোটকু চার্লির জীবনে আসার পর মোটকু চার্লিকে নানাবিধ সমস্যায় ফেললেও বেশ পড়ার ছিল গল্পটা যদিও মোটকু চার্লির জন্য কিছুটা মায়া লেগেছে। বেচারা চার্লির সবকিছু হারিয়ে সর্বহারা হয়ে দিশেহারা ঐদিকে এতদিন পর ফিরে আসা ভাই সবকিছু দখল করে মজা নেয়ার বিষয়গুলো অনেক মজার ছিল।

এদিকে আনানসির শত্রুরাও বসে ছিলনা, সুযোগ পেয়ে আনানসির দুই ছেলের জীবনের ১২টা বাজাতে তারা যথেষ্ট তৎপর ছিল। এবং দুই ভাইয়ের টম-জেরী খেলা আর আনানসির শত্রুগুলোর তার ছেলেদের পেছনে লাগা - সবমিলিয়ে পুরো বইটা বেশ ভালো লেগেছে।

মোঃ ফুয়াদ আল ফিদাহ এর অনুবাদ নিয়ে নতুন কিছু বলার দরকার নেই, উনার অন্যান্য বইগুলোর মতোই যথেষ্ট সাবলীল এবং সুপাঠ্য ছিল অনুবাদ। আগাথা ক্রিস্টি, জেমস রলিন্স সহ আরো একজন লেখকের অনুমতি নিয়ে অনুবাদের লিস্ট যুক্ত হল অনুবাদকের নামের সাথে।

বইটার সাথে একটা সহায়িকা বই ছিল, যেখানে আনানসির পরিচয়, আনানসির সাথে বিভিন্ন প্রাণীর শত্রুতা নিয়ে মিথগুলো গল্পাকারে লেখা ছিল। আশা করি লেখক আরো কয়েকটা গল্প অ্যাড করে একটা বই আকারে প্রকাশ করবেন। যেকোন বয়সের জন্য পাঠযোগ্য হবে এবং আশা করি সব বয়সীদের ভালো লাগবে।

উত্তেজনায় ভরা, কখনও একটু ভয়ের, আর অবশ্যই মজার গল্প 'আনানসি বয়েজ', মূলত যৌবন, বুনো অভিযান আর অটল বিপদের মুখোমুখি হবার রঙ্গিন এক গল্প।'

В Момчетата на Аананси Нийл Геймън демонстрира смазващо добра писателска форма - остроумен, сладкодумен, жиднеутвърждаващ, замислящ, мъдър... Страниците не просто се четат, а се просмукват в теб като мелодии от любим саундтрак. И ако с Американски богове (един от най-успешните му и харесвани романи по принцип) почти успя да ме отегчи - там май само краят оправи положението (впрочем, великолепен край), то с тази книга спечели сърцето ми завинаги.

Oh, Neil Gaiman and his perfect blend of fantasy, drama, darkness, and humor... My reading life would not be the same without him! This was a thoroughly enjoyable experience (as expected), and though I would say it's one of my lesser favorite Gaiman novels it's only so because some of his other books are pretty much perfect and hard to compete with. Anansi Boys would actually be a pretty good starting point for anyone looking to dive into Gaiman's work, especially since its relation to American Gods is VERY distant. You don't need to read American Gods to understand or enjoy Anansi Boys. At all. It's a shared universe, sure, but the two books barely cross paths, and have next to nothing in common. Also, this was my last unread Neil Gaiman novel, and now I'm really sad.

Difficult to describe this book..
It is silly, magical, educative, full of hidden meanings
A story of a demigod father , Anansi, and his two sons.
There is not much of a story, if one tries to summarise it, and I feel it is the journey not the destination that matters, in this particular case.
Enjoyed it, felt it resembled the writing of David Nichols at first, had hints of Wodehouse in the middle, and Gaimann himself in between.
Would recommend it to people who don't mind magical realism or fantasy, but those who want to keep their feet firmly on the grounds of reality may not like it much.

To be quite honest with you, I didn't particularly like the first third of this book. It's got nothing to do with the way it's written (Neil Gaiman is as funny and imaginative as ever), it was something else. The things is, I'm a sucker for sibling relationships and I was pleasantly surprised to find one in this book. But Spider and Fat Charlie spend the first half of this book arguing and generally making each others lives hell and it just made me uncomfortable. There were other things too, like Charlies personality and the plot itself, while not being bad at all, they just didn't appeal to me that greatly.

HOWEVER, I continued reading and I am now unbelievably happy I did. After, well, not half the book, but almost, the plot changes. To me it seems as if the books has got two different stories in it, the story of Spider and Charlie's relationship and then the story of everything else. Everything else takes over half way through the book, and it gets really interesting. It also forces Charlie and Spider to start acting like brothers and working together instead of tearing each other apart, and that made me like especially Fat Charlie a lot more.

What really turned this book around for me, though, was the ending. I sit here, a day after finishing it, with a feeling of absolute satisfaction. I rarely get that from a book, sure I've read books with brilliant, fantastic endings, books that ended exactly the way I wanted them to, but never one that left me so satisfied on all fronts. I believe the biggest contributive to this feeling is Charlie. The one and only. He undergoes some serious changes in the book, and comes out on the other side as one of my favourite characters in fiction. His change from someone I sort of dislike, to someone I utterly love is so complete, and so brilliantly done, that I can't help but feel satisfied.

This is why in the end it gets 4 stars. It wasn't perfect, perhaps, but it was still fantastic.

Oh, and perhaps I should mention, I listened to some of the audiobook at one point, and while I'm not usually a fan of this, I was pleased I did it, because it helped me sort out my "inner Spider" voice. I'd gotten the way he talks completely wrong, and I liked him a lot better when I got it right. (I know it sounds that weird it should matter that much, but there was really quite a difference between my Spider and the audiobook's Spider. So I can recommend that!)

Well, this felt a bit like a spider getting drunk while reading a history of literary genres, and then spinning a thread and getting all tangled up in the different genres himself while trying to make sense of the pattern he created.

The web is a fable posing as a detective story posing as an embarrassing coming of age and heartbreak story mixed with fantasy and crime, put in a treasure chest and shipped off to the pirates of the Caribbean, where it decides to change shape and take a chapter's break in the realm of spooky ghost stories, before wrapping up as a social satire on the nature of love and happiness.

To be fair, the author added the most accurate and funny description of a monstrous hangover I have ever read, and while letting the reader look like a question mark most of the time, he also makes several of the reader's days by creating laughing-out-loud moments of nonsensical, witty humour in the middle of a comedy which could have the subtitle "the tragedy of the human condition".

Bowing to Sartre's existentialism, he also creates a mini-hell of his preferred definition: "l'enfer, c'est les autres", and instead of eternally grilling humans in their frustrating interaction in the closed-off hell-cave, he lets a dark and mean and dumb-as-a-brick brutal god go bonkers whenever a tiny ex-human says something annoyingly irritating. Killing it off is a meaningless feat, of course, as it plays the honorable part of Prometheus' liver in this firework of storytelling:

"Stories are like spiders, with all they long legs, and stories are like spiderwebs, which man gets himself all tangled up in but which look pretty when you see them under a leaf in the morning dew, and in the elegant way that they connect to one another, each to each."

That is a wisdom I will cherish from now on, but even deeper layers of learning were reached in the important science of how to wear a demanding hat and how not to blame a lime for the pickle you're in!

Neil Gaiman is the god of storytellers - which might well be a curse in his universe, as gods are constantly in trouble for having too much imagination and too little impulse control. They're a perfect mirror of their creators, obviously.

Wonderful, spidery, funny, - beyond the realm of descriptive adjectives!

যারা ফ্যান্টাসি এবং থ্রিলার পছন্দ করেন তাদের জন্য "আনানসি বয়েজ" অবশ্যপাঠ্য বই।যেসব পাঠক গেইম্যানের লেখা পছন্দ করেন না,তাদেরও বইটি পড়ে লেখকের ভক্ত হওয়ার প্রবল সম্ভাবনা রয়েছে।

3 stars I guess. Got kind of distracted towards the end but understood the gist of the story.

I spent the evening avoiding my nightly duties to my family while slowly pruning in the tub while reading this. Time to transfer back into my normal wrinkles and be a grown up.

The book was good. Not great. But it was playful. I can see how many of my friends would love it. Stop. Many of my friends DO love it. It is a song and dance about family, brothers, myths, stories. It just fell a bit flat with me. Perhaps, like someone who has grown too old to see fairies or see magic, I'm just through a certain veil where Gaiman's prose works, but I KNOW -- I'm not feeling him the same way some are. I hear the words. I just don't want to sing and dance.

Firmly in my forties, I feel almost obligated to keep reading Gaiman books even though they are past, for me, their expiration date. The magic is fading. But something still pulls me back in. They are the Lays Potato Chips of science fiction. Harsh? Perhaps, but perhaps it is just that I'm not directly Gaiman's fanbase anymore. He isn't writing exactly for me and I know it. I feel it. But still, every few seasons -- I unavoidably -- reach into the greasy Gaiman bag for another book. I miss the song. I miss the dance. So, periodically, I open his books and try and recreate those first few pages, the first few times. I try to put my youth and magic back into a bottle, but I don't have the focus or the patience.

3 Stars for Anansi Boys (audiobook) by Neil Gaiman read by Lenny Henry.

This was kind of disappointing. I normally really like the author’s stories but this one just didn’t work for me.

Another great book by Neil Gaiman. As usual the characters are quirky and bizarre. Gaiman's development of the characters is, as usual, outstanding. While seemingly a sequel to American Gods it truly is not. Even if you are not a fan of fantasy, give this one a shot. It will make you a fan of Neil Gaiman.
