These were interesting as snapshots of the 70s and 80s but I did not enjoy the first two (Uncommon Women, Isn't It Romantic) and the third (The Heidi Chronicles) I only somewhat liked. The recent past can seem as alien as centuries ago, which really makes me consider how alien centuries ago really would be if I could only see it clearly.

As with all drama, any or all of these might be 100x better seen upon a stage than read in a book, although it is hard to imagine the first two having resonance with modern audiences -- the problems they are concerned with just aren't the problems most people are facing today. Not that misogyny is over! Misogyny is alive and well, but it looks so different now than it did in the 1970s that I found it very hard to engage with the reality behind these forms.

Easily my favorite Wasserstein play by a mile. Heidi is a beautifully realized, nuanced character. There are some serious issues with white feminism and a lack of intersectionality that is unfortunately usual of the time (late 80s), and many of the secondary characters are one-dimensional, but the latter is likely intentional (heightens our attachment to and empathy for Heidi), and despite the former, the play nevertheless makes bold claims about female autonomy and the complexity of life-altering choices.

Loved every part of this. My favorite play was "The Heidi Chronicles." More on my opinions on my blog: http://canilang.blogs.brynmawr.edu/20...

I recently re-read these plays, and although they're clearly set in a certain time period, they still ring very true.

"Heidi Chronicles" is one of the reasons I went into theater in the first place. Loved Wendy Wasserstein. Such a loss.

Grāmata ar trim Wendy Wasserstein lugām. Ar katru nākamo paliek labāk, beigās ir ļoti labi. Visvairāk domāju par to, ka es un autore varētu būt labas draudzenes.

I felt as if she was speaking to me throughout all three plays. She writes about the modern woman in an engaging personal way, no preaching, no hitting you over the head. In fact if you'd like to understand the modern women's 'struggle' and joys please read these plays.

What an incredibly funny (and poignant...and telling...) play. Someone needs to make a movie of this.

Only read "The Heidi Chronicles" - although some parts are certainly dated, it's amazing how the struggle to have it all is still completely ongoing today - there is no one right answer for how to balance your life. Wasn't as inspiring of discussion as I want most bookclub books to be.

The book has witty conversation but that was really all i liked about it. I liked the main character but the ending didn't quite agree with me. It felt unfinished :/

Read this originally MANY years ago. It has not aged well and honestly now it seems insipid. Maybe read it for the nostalgia, but otherwise I don’t recommend
