Hilarious!

Jonathan Swift was a satirical genius! His writing style is difficult to read, and it took me a while to parse his sentences and understand what he was trying to say, but it was hilarious once I got it! I originally bought this collection just for his "Modest Proposal" but I enjoyed all of the other works in this short collection as well.

Ce n’est pas sans raison que la « Modeste proposition concernant les enfants des classes pauvres » est de loin le plus connu des quatre textes proposés ici. C’est en effet celui où la verve satirique de Swift s’exerce avec le plus de mordant et le plus de clarté. Les trois autres textes sont en effet plus obscurs, la faute peut-être à la traduction ou plus sûrement a des indices contextuels qui nous font défaut. Et c’est là qu’on voit à nouveau les limitations de ces éditions bon marchés dépourvue d’un minimum d’appareil critique permettant d’apprécier pleinement les textes proposés.

Short, funny and extremely sarcastic! Worth reading!

Satirisk samhällskritik. Titeltexten är helt klart stilmässigt den mest erfarna (1729), textens meningsbyggnad har klarnat, blivit mer klassicistisk, än de tidiga röriga barocktexterna. Titeltexten är så effektiv att den väcker avsky även hos mig, 300 år senare.
De ingående texterna har utvecklats över trettio år och väckt mycket avsky. Ibland förstår jag och roas, men inte alltid, ibland är det för kulturellt tidbunden, som när samhället ändrats. Men en del texter gäller mer generella mänskliga drag, och då går det hem än idag.

I’m giving this book 4 stars solely on the merits of “A Modest Proposal.”

A Modest Proposal was great. So were the rules for servants. Jonathan Swift is a master satirist. But a lot of the accompanying papers were snores--inside jokes, and even languages, with friends. So, 4 stars to the funny papers, and 2 stars to the boring letters, with an average of 3 stars.

Only reason this isn’t 1 star is because of the title essay which is very funny and well done. Everything else is very uninteresting though, and often very difficult to parse, which I would understand if A Modest Proposal was not written in a completely understandable style that the author could’ve done everything else in. I don’t know, maybe I’m just dense, but the majority of the stories in here were not great.

College reads: I only read chapters/sections relevant to my studies, hence the dnf (A Modest Proposal for Preventing the Children of Poor People in Ireland from Being a Burthen to their Parents or Country, and for Making Them Beneficial to the Public)

This is obviously an incredible satire, which hopes to give some satisfaction to the rich. I recently reread it after reading The Sorrows of Young Mike. In John Zelazny's parody, the main character parodies Jonathan Swift's modest proposal. It is a parody within a parody and the modern twist is displayed well.
