Always an entertaining read. John McPhee could write about anything and make it interesting. I had read several of the stories features here but it was fun to read an excerpt and remember the story.

These are mostly otherwise unwanted misfires collected together with a couple of decent excerpts to cash in on his New Yorker recognition among older readers

If you are just fining John McPhee this book is a great place to start. I think I've given away at least 1/2 a dozen copies over the years.

An fine writer who gets into the soul of his subjects.  Excellent with telling details and the critical anecdote; fine sentences.

Paperbacks are always a gamble because some publisher's printing uses poor quality paper and results in what is called poor Ink Holdout, the individual type characters spread resulting in a page that looks like a colony of ants are running around!  Not the Seller's fault, the publisher's fault. Better to by a paperback Retail so you can inspect. Also, first editions are usually better quality.

John McPhee has never disappointed me. Amazing that with all of his books always the chapters can stand alone and be complete. The First John McPhee Reader is what got me started as a reader of his books. I recommend him to everyone. I learn from him every time and enjoy it.

With his detailed, on-site interviews, careful research and pinpoint writing, John McPhee can make the most mundane topic enchanting.  If you don't believe me, consider what he did with flood control on the Red and Atchafalaya rivers in Louisiana, just one of the chapters here.  If you want to witness some really fine writing, and along the way learn about things you never realized were so important, pick up THE SECOND JOHN McPHEE READER.  If anything, it's better than the first!
