Read it solely for my class. But it was a good read, a witty and thematic one. It is a play that deals with cultural exposition, modernization and tribe faiths. I really liked how soyinka made all his characters individually gleamed. As for sidi we feel bad for her on what had happened in the climax but can't deny the fact that she was always self centered and arrogant for her beauty. That is why she was called jewel. On the other hand Lakunle was the modern Character who wanted to bring modernity but he lacks the principles and was very aristocratic in his timeline. And the lion, the fox- the baroka was the character who had many layers on his own. He seemed very peculiar to me. And last but not the least sadiku that old hag represents the obsolete superstitious village lady who was used as a pawn but she herself was a lady with wicked mind.

An interesting (and somewhat surprising) take on the tension between traditional cultures and modernization/westernization. I wasn't sure if the humor would land for me, but the banter - particularly between Sidi and Lakunle was clever and comical.

Witty characters who spoke almost strictly in pretty illuminating parables, any problematisation of western modernity gets my approval stamp

I'm completely new to Soyinka, but I'm a fan. I like that he gives you stories of African traditions and colonialism, without making these the focus of his plays. Very enjoyable.
