The Bone Collector is my introduction to Mr. Jeffery Deaver, and it was well worth reading, I wasn't a bit disappointed!

Lincoln Rhyme, was one of the nation's most brilliant criminologist, and a genius in the field of forensics. But after a horrible accident has left him physically crippled and paralyzed completely. Now quadriplegic and no longer wanting to live, Lincoln is about to face a deadly opponent, known only as The Bone Collector (hence the title), a diabolical killer stalking the citizens of New York, who kidnaps and skins his victims right down to the bone, using the bone as his calling card.

The secondary protagonist is Amelia Sachs, a young NYPD detective who teams up with Rhyme and the rest of his Forensics group. Amelia is Rhyme's eyes, taking prints and searching the dead victims for clues to track down their killer.

Seeing the movie with Denzel Washington and Angelina Jolie made me want to read this book in the worst way, (I'm a big fan of Denzel)!

I love Deaver's style of writing, his descriptions, the eerie setting, and his talk about forensic science. Highly recommended.

6/2014 ... Read this one again and still a solid 4 stars. I do like the characters in this and look forward to continuing the series.

1st read in 2008 ... Very detailed description of crime scene investigation. I would have given it 5 stars except that it's a bit too gory & gruesome in some places for me. Loved the surprise ending ... totally unexpected to me. Especially love the 2 main characters & plan to read more of this series & his other books. And yes, it's much better than the movie which was pretty good!

I had seen the movie version of THE BONE COLLECTOR and was not fond of it. I am a huge fan of Jeffery Deaver and decided to finally read this one.

First of all, I'd like to talk about the movie. When a writer creates characters and a story from his/her own imagination, the details should be respected. After reading the book, I have the feeling that the movie producers simply wanted to buy rights to this book not because they liked the story but because it was a best seller coming from a popular author. They wanted to turn this into a black movie with black characters. The head character Lincoln Rhyme is a white man. Amelia Sachs is a white woman with hair as red as her flaming temper. Thom, Lincoln's assistant and physical therapist is a gay white man. So why, in the film, is Lincoln Rhyme suddenly Denzel Washington, a black man and why is gay white Thom now a black woman? Amelia's hair color was changed because Angelina Jolie, a pitiful actress at best, was their choice to play Amelia.

To me, this is disrespectful to both author and to the characters. They should have filmed the story using a white actor (George Clooney, for example) as Lincoln, a redhaired actress or at least one who colored her hair red or used hair pieces as Amelia, and a white man as Thom. Changing these things was a racist act (yes, you CAN be racist towards white people). It is like deciding to make a miniseries of the wonderful Alex Haley book ROOTS and change all the characters to Asian just because you had some Asian actor friends.

I enjoyed this story. Lincoln Rhyme had been at the top of the forensic game when an accident at a crime scene left him a prisoner in his own body, paralyzed from the neck down. His marriage crumbled, his career ended, and left unable to care for himself, Lincoln is actively planning suicide with the help of a doctor when a case just literally is dropped into his bedroom. He meets patrol officer Amelia Sachs who had stumbled onto a dead body and the race is on.

Lincoln can't help being drawn into trying to solve the case. The killer- the Bone collector- kidnaps and kills people , leaving very unique clues that take forensic muster to figure out. Poor Amelia, hoping for a people job (she has terrible arthritis), is forced to walk the grid at the scenes and be Lincoln's eyes. At one point he wants her to saw off a pair of hands as evidence! He finds her strangely attractive but she isn't interested.

When the FBI tries to barge in and steal the case away, taking it in the wrong direction, it is Amelia who suddenly steals the evidence and returns it to the makeshift lab at Lincoln's townhouse. Lives are at stake and she sees firsthand that the FBI are going in the wrong direction.

How does she wind up in Lincoln's bed? How does she and Thom keep him from committing suicide (obviously there are many more Lincoln Rhyme books in the series so this is no spoiler)? What inspires him to stay alive? Who is this bone collector and why is he murdering people who remind him of characters in an obscure book he stole from the library just as they died in history in this book? You'll have to read the book to find out. You won't regret it.

It was interesting to read this book for the first time so many years after I first watched the movie. It was hard to get Denzel, Angelina, and Queen Latifah out of my head.

This book was fascinating as it detailed the minutiae of crime scene investigation, and since that would’ve been my dream job if not for all the science involved, I was here for it.

Overall, I actually enjoyed the movie more than the book, which NEVER happens. The crime scene investigating minutiae went on a little too long.

I also found some of the law enforcement situations to be insanely unrealistic. An example would be Amelia forcing the EMT to enter an uncleared building, potentially with a serial killer still inside, then hands him her gun and tells him to cover her. If I were that EMT I would say, “Girl, you’re crazy!”

There are some gory scenes in here that aren’t for the faint of heart, just FYI.

Another great Deaver novel. This was so much better than the movie was. So much more in depth, from the investigation itself to the personality of Lincoln Rhyme. So glad I decided to finally read it. I was not sure I would enjoy it as much as I enjoyed the Kathryn Dance series simply from the forensic aspect. I am more about the action side of mystery, but this one has plenty of action involved. The imagery of this story is amazing. I could not believe how visual it was for me.

So we have a serial killer called 'The Bone Collector', who is actually not a killer at all, but a planner that leads his victims to their death. He sets the victims up and lets life and nature naturally take it's course. He gives clues to the whereabouts of each victim and watches Rhyme and his team try to find them before the inevitable happens. Why the name? Because he loves bones.

All of the character's are created beautifully! Lincoln Rhyme is much more over the top in the book than he is in the movie. And this is not necessarily in a bad way. I am talking about his personality. Sometimes he really rubbed me the wrong way. But it also seemed to make him more real, more believable. He is a quadriplegic, unable to use any of his extremities, of course he would have a bad attitude and Deaver really developed him well.

I also look forward to watching Amelia grow through this series. She is a little hesitant at first in this book, but as I read through it she started to open up more and more and became a lot more confident and I loved that. I am not sure how much more she can grow but she is definitely one of my favorite characters and I think she will continue to be a force in this series.

This book has a great plot twist and even though I watched the movie there was a lot that I had forgotten about. So much more detail in the book. I could not put the book down till I was done. I look forward to the rest of this series! I recommend this book to anyone who likes a great story with lots of forensic elements and a lot of great mystery to solve.

A great read although I found some of the lines which had confused me like the technical aspects of the crime scene. Nevertheless, the book was enjoyable.

I kept visualizing Denzel Washington and Angelina Jolie in their respective roles all the time.

Hope this series will become a mystery and thriller for the lifetime. Looking forward to complete reading the whole series this year.

Recommended for all the mystery and thriller lovers, although many of you guys might have read this because it was published 22 years ago !!.

I am a sucker for a good gory crime novel, so this ticked basically every box for me. I very much look forward to reading more of the Lincoln Rhyme series.

3.5 stars. This was a very well made crime novel, it was intense and engaging and I didn't get bored at all by it. But I don't think police procedure books are always for me. It's takes a lot to be something I really like but this was good enough.
