I try to express only my most honest opinion in a spoiler-free way. Unfortunately, there is still always a risk of slight spoilers despite my best efforts. If you feel something in my review is a spoiler please let me know. Thank you.

Ok, so I just basically devoured this book. I know this is a favorite book for teachers to require kids to read. But I see why. This book is about an amazing 13-year-old boy who used his brain and logic as well as his resourcefulness to overcome problems and survive in a situation where most adults would meet their ends. I never had the pleasure of reading this book in school but I am glad I finally had the chance to read it now. It is easy to see how this book became a classic.

Brian is such a smart and resourceful boy. He uses problem-solving skills to accomplish great things and even when things fall apart, he gets back up and never lets anything keep him down. Some of the things that he went through and managed to force himself into left me shivering and shouting "Uh ah. No way." It did have one line that had me laughing out loud. It was an unexpectedly funny moment.

With 5 books in the series, I doubt they will be as good as this one, but I'm willing to give them a shot. I sometimes have a hard time with classics as I don't get a lot of symbolism and such that your suppose to see in them. But this one I enjoyed very much.

Hatchet is a story of lone survival in the wilderness. When a young boy off to visit his father in Northern Canada, is stranded off-course when the pilot of the small bush plane taking him there has a heart attack, he is forced to perform a crash landing. While the boy fashions himself a shelter and works on taking care of the necessary amenities of life, he starts to become a different person. With a newfound appreciation of nature and beauty, a carefully-learned patience, and a dedicated persistence and drive, he notices the marked difference in his thoughts and feelings.

Author Gary Paulsen infuses divorce and infidelity as part of the story line, and repeatedly has the boy, Brian, flashback to stressful images and thoughts related to his parents' failed relationship. Although this inclusion seems slightly contrived and sometimes unnecessary, it’s interesting to note how the old Brian was eager to inform his father of ‘the secret,’ while the newly enlightened Brian decided better of it.

That was very possibly the worst book I’ve ever read. Wow. The first part was about him flying to see his dad who is estranged from him and his mom because his mom had an affair. Only the kid isn’t supposed to know about the affair. He saw his mom making out with the man in a car and knows she goes to see on certain days at certain times. And he assumes his dad doesn’t know, so he’s keeping this horrible secret, one he feels he has to keep to protect his dad. So many things wrong with this. I was expecting to be able to just get over that part and move on to a fun survival story, but it never got there. Every other thought he has ends up back at “the secret” and how he can’t be lucky because then his mom wouldn’t have cheated on his dad and their family wouldn’t have broken up. He is carrying way too much for a kid.

Then the survival part- it was marred by his worry about the secret. But also it was boring! Nothing in there worth keeping my attention. And then it just ends and he is still holding the secret and hasn’t told anyone he knows and continues with this burden that no child should have to have. I thought for sure that one thing would have been resolved, but nope! Just a sad, terrible book. The end even includes the terrible, almost permanent side effects from his experience. No happiness or hope at all. I’ve been waiting years to read it and now it’s leaving my house. I don’t even want a copy on my shelves.

My sweet, sensitive 9 year old is reading this in ELA and absolutely loving it. He recommended I read it, and since I never have, of course I bought a copy! This is some heavy stuff for kids, but the appeal is obvious. It’s a grown up story (at least for my son) with serious situations. It’s more literary than most books he’s drawn to. I think it will change him as a reader. I can’t wait to see his reaction to the ending!

Friggin' awesome. My 3rd grade teacher read this book aloud to my class, a chapter a day, and I remember being absolutely enthralled every single day. She read it to us right before first recess, so whenever that day's chapter ended with a cliffhanger we had the whole recess to discuss what we thought was going to happen next (and act out our own renditions of the time Brian got attacked by a bear).

The writing just flows and you're constantly worried about Brian. Having to survive with nothing else but a hatchet and the clothes on your back can't be easy. I loved seeing how innovative his brain worked. Making tools from his environment. It was super impressive for a thirteen year old boy. I practically flew through the pages.
