"Matthew Flinder's Cat" is a really absorbing story about a derelict named Billy and the friendship he forms with a child named Ryan. This isn't a happy, good-feelings story, but it is really touching and I was completely invested in Billy's story. I wrestled with his struggles, celebrated his victories, mourned his losses. This book also provides a window into the experiences of a derelict, drunk and living on the streets, and the bonds and struggles that are encompassed in such an existence. While "enjoyable" is the wrong word to describe this book, as Billy's life is not an easy one, it is a really good book and I would definitely recommend it.

Can I ever say enough about Bryce Courtenay? this time he delves into the nature of addiction. He writes about the evils of humanity so easily and explores what is good and evil about us all. While this may not be his most gripping book (sorry boxing fans-3/4 through it and only one small ref to an old fighter) but the story line of a laywer turned homeless alcohlic who attempts rehab to save one little boy is still so real and believable. Recommended for Fans of his literture- I don't know if this should be the first book of his you should read though....

Of course, I noticed this book due to the title. But, boy, does it go for an unexpected ride. There are stories within stories, from the history of Australian exploration told through the eyes of a cat, to homelessness and addiction, to Australia's underground pedophilia rings.

Some of the stats are included a bit awkwardly (like, the characters who give them would be highly unlikely to have them memorized). Some of the connections between characters are also too convenient. Just a touch of deus ex machina. All that said, though, it's a good book, and narrated well.
