Se è vero che l'incipit di un romanzo sia fondamentale, in quanto già riesce a metterti in sintonia con le corde di tutta la narrazione, quello di Douglas Adams è la perfezione. L'empatia tra me e Dirk Gently è iniziata subito, dalla prima pagina, tanto da domandarmi se io e tutta questa storia non fossimo destinate ad incontrarci, per via della fondamentale interconnessione di tutte le cose.
L'investigatore più assurdo di tutta la storia dei possibili investigatori che la letteratura abbia mai prodotto (e di tizi strambi ne sono usciti fuori parecchi), nasce dallo strano connubio di fantascienza, giallo ed umorismo; quello che ne esce fuori è Dirk Gently, descritto talmente sommariamente nell'aspetto fisico - tanto che non ne abbiamo che una confusa e poco delineata idea - quanto minuziosamente dal punto di vista caratteriale per farcelo apparire come assolutamente fuori di testa.
Ammetto che alcuni punti della trama mi hanno lasciato un po' di perplessità, ma sono curiosa di scoprire cosa si nasconde tra le pagine dei volumi successivi. Lettura assolutamente consigliata, se non altro per lo strano alternarsi di comicità e riflessioni di una profondità commovente.
In verità è una mente rara quella che può rendere ciò che finora non esisteva di una ovvietà accecante.

Pročitao sam HOLISTIČKU DETEKTIVSKU AGENCIJU DIRKA GENTLYJA, hrvatski prevod klasika Douglasa Adamsa. Sugestivna američka adaptacija koju ja napravio Max Landis podstakla me je da se vratim literarnom izvoru iako mi humor Douglasa Adamsa nije previše blizak i nisam preveliki ljubitelj SFa pisanog za zasmejavanje. Moram odmah na početku reći da su mi obe ekranizacije, i britanska i američka, bolje od romana, što nije čest slučaj kada se porede dramska i prozna dela. Naime, američka više duguje Pynchonu nego Adamsu, i samo su neki detalji slični u pogledu zapleta, pa i odnosa među junacima. Međutim, sve što je u američkoj ekranizaciji bolje, upravo nadoknađuje nedostatke romana. Naime, obe ekranizacije su efektnije jer su građene na dramskoj strukturi i kompoziciono su zrelije postavljene od romana. Recimo, Dirk Gently lično se pojavljuje u romanu negde posle trećine teksta, a tamo se pojavljuje odmah.

Ono što su ključne postmoderne reference, međutim prepoznaju obe ekranizacije. Osnovna je naravno Sherlock Holmes, i ta matrica superdarovitog detektiva koji ima "običnog čoveka" kao svedoka i saradnika, i na tome se bazira britanski DIRK GENTLY, čiji kratak život sasvim sigurno možemo pripisati i pohjavljivanju Moffatovog SHERLOCKa. Međutim, to je i DOCTOR WHO, serija sa kojom Adams ima intenzivan odnos, i njenu atmosferu umnogome prepoznaje i razrađuje Landis.

Elem, vratimo se samoj knjizi.

Adams preuzima strukturu detektivskog romana, ali u jednoj zapravo najrudimentarnijoj formi, sa sve tom postavkom povratne opruge gde se na kraju sve razjasni prema početku, i onda na nju gradi slojeve SF imaginacije, društvene i svake druge satire. Za razliku od najboljih primera ovakve literature gde roman funkcioniše na svakom nivou, GENTLY iznad svega moramo posmatrati kao humoristički roman. i ko voli ovakav humor, kao takav je prilično solidan.

Ono što ga sprečava da se razvije u nepšto više i da u potpunosti iskoristi sve elemente koje uvodi jeste pre svega strukturalna svedenost. Bolji roman bi za početak morao biti duži sa većom razradom pojedinih elemenata. To se u ovom rukopisu nije desilo.

Ipak, pojedina rešenja iz ovog romana, koji za nekoliko dana puni trideset godina, nastavila su da žive u nizu kasnijih dela. Otud, Adamsov roman pored efektnosti u jednom segmentu sasvim sigurno možemo smatrati i izuzetno uticajnim.

Not as light as the early Hitchhiker books this book is a lot heavier and grimmer though the humour of Douglas Adams shines through from time to time. Written with all the confusion I expect from his work this an interesting, twisted story. I can't say I enjoyed it as much as the Hitchhiker books but it wasn't too bad.

A confusing story that wraps up toward the end, but isn't that just like life? You can't make heads or tails of what's happening until towards the end. And by then, it's too late. But the beauty of a book, is you can go back and read it all over again.

The individuals involved - Reg, Richard, Gordon, Susan, and Michael - all have roles to play in a wildly complicated mystery that pre-dates human life - in fact all life on the planet, and it takes Dirk Gently, aka Svlad Cjelli, to solve it, with the help of a salt cellar.

A must-read for Adams fans, but don't expect to understand the complicated tangle right away. I did, and I should have read this as one does Adams' other works, and that is to sit back and enjoy the ride. Even when cats (or horses stuck in a bathroom) are involved...

I love this book. I love it far, far more than is in any way reasonable. It is possibly Douglas Adams' strangest work, and it is far and away my favorite. It makes almost no sense unless you read it twice or more. And a good knowledge of the content and historical context of Samuel Taylor Coleridge's Kubla Khan and The Rime of the Ancient Mariner is essentially required to understand many of the jokes and much of the plot.

Because, as it turns out, the linchpin upon which history turns, upon which depends the whole of human history before and to come, is the fact that Coleridge never wrote the second "altogether stranger" part of Kubla Khan.

This discovery is the culmination of an intricate, madcap skein of detecting into the interconnectedness of all things by "holistic detective" Dirk Gently, computer programmer Richard MacDuff and his ghostly employer Gordon Way, an Electric Monk, a rogue Time Lord turned Cambridge professor (the book started life as a Doctor Who script), a horse in the bathroom and a thousand thousand slimy things. Beginning with an inquiry into an inexplicable bout of housebreaking, proceeding to impossible magic tricks, a murder, a sofa that can't be where it is, the mathematics of music, aliens, and time travel, the story is packed with whimsical trivialities which turn out to have the most profound significance — in line with the titular detective's much-professed belief in the interconnectedness of all things, but especially nice beaches in the Bahamas. Although it may appear nonsensical, all is in the end tied together — but if you blink, you'll miss the explanation of how the sofa got up the stairs.

Dirk Gently is a much darker book than The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, but it's also much richer, with a flavor a little closer to Terry Pratchett (and particularly to the brilliant Good Omens) than to the wacky, almost slapstick Hitchhiker series. Adams' omnipresent punnery and clever narrative is absolutely delightful, if subtle enough that one must sometimes pause to figure out just what sort of trick he is playing. The joy Adams took in whimsy and wordplay is palpable on almost every page. This may be the best-written of his works, and to my mind it is also the funniest. It is a quick read, and well worth the few hours it'll take to read twice. Or five times, if you love it as much as I do.

Falta de ritmo, largos tramos aburridos, personajes muy poco interesantes, pasajes largos desconectados casi por completo de la trama principal y un misterio falto de elementos para interesar al lector son la formula para el desastre de este libro.

En la ficción hay algunos recursos que son díficiles de trabajar, a mi parecer uno de los más complicados son los viajes en el tiempo, no importa cuanto humor le imprimas, y vaya que Adams le pone mucho, este puede llevar a estrellarte y aquí simplemente no funciona, no tanto porque este mal manejado sino porque terminá sin desarrollarse, le faltán páginas para hacer que realmente sirva al punto de que se siente como si el libro hubiese terminado a la mitad de la historia.

La mayoría de los personajes me daban igual y si bien Dirk fue un personaje que me agrado y del que quería conocer más no aparece hasta pasada la mitad del libro y, con él, comienzan a suceder cosas que podían ser interesantes pero que al final no se desarrollan lo suficiente como para levantar la historia y al final sólo dejan la sensación de que las cosas se pusieron raras.

Al final para mi la historia no funciona y es interesante en un 30% pero el resto es malo, inconcluso y con un humor extremadamente forzado por momentos.

This re-read is holistic indeed!

I adore the way Douglas Adams ties together nearly every bit in the end. Or probably absolutely every tiny bit? For I have to admit, that the fully comprehension of the end lies just outside my grasp. But that is one of the many attractions this book has for me. When thinking about it, I get involuntarily caught in one of those space time paradoxons that cause headaches.

Poetry, music, computer work, British Telecom and even the infamous sofa are all part of the greater picture.
The writing is intelligent, hilarious and silly at times. I laughed out loud several times and every other page contains a quote-worthy sentence.

For me, this is Douglas Adams' best work. And I was delighted to realise, that after all these years it hasn't lost a iota of it's fascination for me.

Douglas Adams has never failed to make me glow with delight, with no disappointment aftertaste on re-read.

I shouldn’t be such a fan. I’m tone deaf about a lot of humor. Fantastical, whimsical romps rarely work for me. Adams hits every note right, is an exception who stretches my boundaries, was a treasure we lost far too early.

Kitap boyunca gerçekten yer yer çok eğlendim, yer yer ilginç bulduğum noktalar oldu ve her şeyden öte hayalgücüm çok farklı seviyelere ulaştı. Eh, bunu söyleyerek kitabı "kutsal" hale getirmiş olmak biraz abartı olur. Kutsal Dedektiflik Bürosu elinize alıp kafa dağıtmak için harika bir kitap. Eğer derinliğine inerseniz hayal kırıklığına uğramanız olası, eğer yüzeysel bakarsanız kitaptan keyif almamanız hayli olası, o yüzden geriye kalan tek seçenek anlatılanları hiç sorgulamadan onunla beraber serüvenden serüvene uçmanız. Kitabın bir diğer güzel yanı ise bilimsel açıdan güzel noktalara değinmesi. Gerek kuantum alanına dair düşünceler olsun, gerek zamanın kendisine olan atıflar olsun, gerekse farklı dünyalarda yaratılan farklı işlevlere sahip cihazlar olsun; bu detayları okuyup irdelemek bu kitabı değerli kılan özelliklerden birisi oldu benim için. Mesleki uğraşlar açısından çok güzel bir yaklaşım açısı bulduğum bir alıntı paylaşıyım:

"Eğer bir şeyi gerçekten anlamak isterseniz, bunun en iyi yolu onu başka birine anlatmaya çalışmaktır. Bu şekilde insan olayı kendi zihninde düzene koymaya mecbur kalıyor. Kitabın sorunlarına gelecek olursak eğer, bunların en başında çeviri geliyor. Normalde çeviriye çok yermeyen birisiyim ama bu kitapta rahatsız edecek hatalar ne yazık ki fazlasıyla bulunmakta. Bazı kısımlarda çevirmen, orjinal kitaptaki cümleyi tıpatıp aynı şekilde çevirmeye kalkışınca okuyucu için o cümleyi anlamak adeta işkence hale gelmiş. Kitabı okurken belli bir noktadan sonra hem bu hataları görmezden gelmeye başlamam hem de bazı yerlerde çevirmenin harika iş çıkarması kitaptan genel olarak keyif almamı sağladı yine de.

Bunun dışında kitab��n sonuyla ilgili birkaç tuhaflık var. Bu tuhaflığın ikinci kitapta açıklanmasını bekliyorum açıkçası. Bunun en temel sebebi kitabın sonlarının gerçekten biraz aceleye gelmiş olması. İkinci kitap, bu kitaptan farklı bir konuyu ele alıyorsa müthiş hayal kırıklığına uğrayacağım.

Genel olarak kitabın ağır ve ilginç başlayan başlangıcından sonra bahsettiğim eğlenceli karakterlerin hikayeye girişi ile kitaptan epey keyif aldım. Beni birçok kez güldüren ve aynı zamanda düşündürüp sorrgulatan bir eser oldu Kutsal Dedektiflik Bürosu. Ayrıca Douglas Adams'ın en meşhur kitabı olan "Otostopçunun Galaksi Rehberi" kitabını şimdi daha da çok merak ediyorum. Bilimkurgu-fantastik-komedi birleşimi bir kitap okumak isteyen herkese bu kitabı kesinlikle tavsiye ederim.

Adams, author of the bafflingly popular The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series as well as this whimsical genre-buster and its sequel, seems to have mastered the oximoronic art of writing funny books that are actually not very funny at all. There are some wacky English characters who fall somewhere on a spectrum between Jeeves and Fat Charlie's brother Spider, and an unusual plot which plods along aimlessly and manages to make 260 pages feel like 1000, and you may smirk a couple of times but actual laughs are unlikely. Don't feel bad if you get confused by the end; Adams himself said: "All I can say is that it was as clear as day to me when I wrote it and now I can't figure it out myself."
