Margaret Truman's Capital Crimes series isn't a traditional series that is a continuing saga based on the same main characters, so don't worry about reading them in order.

I am just not much of a mystery fan unless there is a prolific serial killer involved. And though they tried to speculate about a serial killer in this book, there just wasn't enough action and suspense for me in a mystery story.

I've decided that I like police detective stories better than lawyer books and much better than reporters/journalists.

Likes:
* Edith Vargas Swayze, police detective was my favorite character
* Epilogue was my favorite chapter in the book, interesting and covered a lot of ground

Dislikes:
* main character, Joe Wilcox, lying, apathetic, unhappy reporter
* didn't really like any of the main characters
* Michael LaRue, on CD, was really pompous and annoying
* Roberta, Wilcox's daughter, is a TV reporter and she wasn't very appealing either
* story was slow and spent lots of time on Wilcox's personal life, which I didn't really care about
* what happened to Roberta's boyfriend that she was going to marry?

With-reservations:
lying, murder, peeping, blackmail, infidelity, blurred morality

The best of hers I’ve read. A journalist is drawn in to investigating the murder of two young women working ind DC’s media outlets, one print and one television.

I wanted to be entertained, but too many things did not ring true, not internally consistent, etc. Too bad!

Fantastic mystery, Margaret Truman's book surprised me. It kept you guessing practically who the murder was until the end.

Getting old

Joe has been a reporter for 23 years, but he is not a go getter anymore. His daughter has become a great news person on tv. He feels left out and discouraged. A murder has happened, and Joe is told to get some fire. His brother turns up after 40 years, and this is just the beginning of many mistakes.

I wanted to like this a lot more, as I generally like Margaret Truman books, but this one just didn't do it for me. Characters just did things that seemed improbable, and I had a hard time getting into it.

No Mac or Annabell in this one. Joe is a newspaper reporter & his daughter is a TV reporter. They are always looking for story leads! Joe decides to add to the news after several murders, including one at his paper, and his brother tracking him down (he has been in a mental ward for forty years). Joe fake news is revealed & he has to leave the paper. The newspaper editor comitted the murder at the paper. The brother murdered his neighbor & confessed on air. The third murder was unsolved.

My mom loved Margaret Truman books so I would always bring some to her. I never read them. I bought this book shortly before she passed away and she was having trouble reading. I rescued it. She never read it. I loved it, or was it she loving it through me. I will read more, Mom!

Unlike the other books Truman has written, this one did not deal with politics. Instead it dealt with an aging reporter who does not follow the ethics he has always held so high. Add a brother who has been in a mental hospital for murder for 40 years, a daughter that is a popular t.v. reporter, a wonderful understanding wife, a policewoman that he once had a fling with and other colorful characters. It was actually a good book.

On the one hand, I enjoyed the Smith-less foray into the territory of journalism, and aspects that brought out. On the other, it's more awfully implausible thriller than mystery, and there's hardly a sympathetic character to be found. File this one under "for completists".
