I love this book because it was about confronting your own fears and dealing with bullies. The only issue is that this book is geared for a younger audience, yet many children may not know the significance of the name "Socrates" or the dream of the cave (in reference to "Allegory of the Cave").
Danny Morgan moves into a new neighborhood and is confronted by the school bully on his first day. He then meets an old man named Socrates, who teaches him the secret of the peaceful warrior. n interesting story of dealing with bullies using courage, love and understanding.
Really not sure about this one- Deals with bullying, (thus the current classification) but the book is based on an adult book by the same name and author. Have had people ask of it more for the author connection.
We just started a unit on friendship and this was a great connection to many of the topics that have come up lately: bullying, what goes around comes around, friendship between genders and more.
The best part was that my class was totally captured by the story. It's really fun to read a book that really grabs their attention. This was a great one for that!
This is a story about a young boy named Danny. Danny's family moves to a new neighborhood, and he is confronted by a frightening bully. One night in a dream, Danny meets an old man with shining white hair--a man who will soon appear in real life and share a wonderful secret. An inspirational story about courage and love.
The story Secret Of The Peaceful Warrior by Dan Millman is about a boy named Danny Morgan and his troubles with moving to a new school. His troubles began on his walk to school with new neighbor, Joy. Out from behind a car the school bully, Carl appeared. This was the beginning of many encounters with Carl and Danny. During lunch Joy filled Danny in on Carl the “School Bully” as he was shooting hoops by himself. That night while Danny was sleeping he dreamt about his neighbor, Socrates. The next day Danny met Socrates while trying to avoid Carl. From that moment on Socrates helps Danny learn to solve his problem.

Most teaching moments for this book would begin with class discussions on the above topics and brainstorming : What makes a good friend? How to be a good friend? How to solve problems with peers? My main goal is to have my students be able be aware of their actions and how they effect others.
