What can I say? I just love Orlando B… arrgh I mean Legolas! And Glorfindel! And Haldir! And Elladan and Elrohir! And all the elves.. sigh!
Oh, wasn´t there Aragorn, Gandalf and some hobbits too? And weren´t they pursued by evil orcs while wandering through the forest? I think a ring was also playing a main part…
I fell instantly in love with these books when I read them for the first time ( I think I was about fifteen that time) and I´m still fond of them. Yes, some people and books are destined to be together for a lifetime… nods head

I won't say much in this review. I very rarely do five stars and I think this one series would be more Four and a half if I could do that.

The world is wonderful. I would like to write in it. And read more in it.

I like that it is long and he goes into great detail in descriptions and such-suspence, danger, wonderful creatures great action scenes. Personally there a couple of scenes I would have liked better another way including the ending-the very ending, but that has nothing to do with Tolkien's writing.

Some do not like his long explanations and journeys and descriptions but as I said I do.

I recommend the whole thing fully.

Do not trust the movie adaptations to show you how wonderful Tolkien is! I cannot stress this enough.

Tolkien really did create something beautiful. We have some of the best world building in history. Moreover, I find Tolkien to be a really easy read so it’s not something you’ll be breaking a sweat over.

Without a doubt Tolkien is someone you should read.

Despite not liking the hobbit, I can’t deny that LOTR world will stay with me forever.

In many ways this has the same failings as the bible: Long-winded, confusing, too much violence, comes off preachy, an inaccurate historical piece, excessively moralistic and boring. But, like the bible, able to spawn some great movies.

Too much walking.

The book The Hobbit was AWESOME. J.R.R Tolkien did an excellent job of action and suspense he even wrote his own LANGUAGE for the dwarfs and the orcs and the elves and any other creature. I like how he wrote it to be before the Lord of the Rings so it goes right into the next three books. I like how he described Bilbo to be a curious and exiting character. Every single time i read about the orcs I could imagine what they look like and what they sound like. There adventure to go to smaug was crazy it kept me reading like a mad man. His cliff hangers made me so mad i could hardly stand it. EVERYONE SHOULD READ THIS.

I started reading the Hobbit in 10th grade with many, many false starts before I finally got into it enough to finish it. Basically read these because most of my geeky D&D playing friends had read them and I wanted to be able to keep up with their discussions! Finally finished the series after HS one summer when I had a month to waste in Canada so I could read for hours uninterrupted. That's what it took to get me through this series, but once I got through the Two Towers, I was hooked. I eventually read the Silmarillion too because that's basically the Genesis to Middle Earth. Tough reads, all of them, unless you are really into long descriptive (yawn) paragraph long sentences.

Frankly, this is the best fantasy book I ever read. The secondary world Tolkien created is believable and true to it own creation. It grips me every time I read it and this trilogy has carried me through every winter for the past 50 years!

These books and the rest of the middle earth books Tolkien has written are in my opinion the greatest work of fiction ever written. No other human being has ever come up with a world out of their own imagination that has come close to the history mythology and lore that Tolkien put into his story. These books are what inspired the modern fantasy genre without them we wouldn't have orcs, halflings, elves (the tall immortal Middle Earth kind, we would still have the short giggly Santa kind), ents, common fantasy cliches such as a dark lord, or big monsters that hate the sun, and what would fantasy be without them. All in all, I just want to say that Tolkien was a genius who used the squiggly lines on paper that we call letters to make something amazing.

I can't believe I've never reviewed this series... I was literally just thinking to myself, "Hey, maybe I should reread LOTR again." Then the very next thought I had was, "I better make dang sure my schedule is free for awhile before I decide to tackle this series again." It is a commitment, but it is well worth it! I only rated it as such because it takes a while for it to get good, at least from how I remember it.
