Amazing. Totally different ending than the book. Huge plot twists.

I picked this up thinking it was the final book (Mostly Harmless) in the Hitchhiker's trilogy. I was disappointed to find out it was actually the BBC production of the book, and not an actual reading of it. But BBC did a nice job of it, so I enjoyed it nonetheless.

Didn't love this one as much as the rest of the series, hard to follow.

Had I fully realized it was a radio play I might have passed on checking it out. It turned out to be entertaining, but less than my full cup of tea.

All I can say to it, is, a fine, and fitting end to the series....as written by Douglas Adams.
Several plot lines, conveniently bundled away in a twist that, I hope leaves the nostalgia buttons flashing happily.

if I could I'd prolly give it a 4.5... but I reserve 5 for books that I frequently and uncontrollably quote to other people :)

Finally, the HHGG radio series is complete.  This story needs THIS cast and THIS medium to truly come to life (the movie can't hold a candle to this production).  The ending is more upbeat than the book, but is just the kind of finale the show needs after 30 years in the making.

Nachdem ich von den Radioscripts der Primary Phase und der Secondary Phase restlos begeistert war, stand ich diesem Buch zunächst skeptisch gegenüber. Der große Unterschied liegt darin, dass die Scripts im ersten Band die Originale sind: Sie sind Douglas Adams Drehbücher zu den Radiohörspielen, auf deren Grundlage er später die Bücher „The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" und „The Restaurant at the End of the Universe" geschrieben hat.
Die in diesem zweiten Buch enthaltenen drei Drehbücher wurden nicht nur lange nach den Büchern geschrieben, sondern auch nach Douglas Adams Tod.
Nun, in der Tertiary Phase gibt es sogar noch Passagen, die von Adams persönlich stammen. Dirk Maggs weist auf alle diese Passagen ausdrücklich in seinen „Fußnoten" hin!
Meine schlimmsten Befürchtungen stellten sich schnell als unbegründet heraus: Die Drehbücher stellen keine lieblos zusammengeraffte (am Originaltext klebende) Versionen von Adams Bücher dar. Klar, man hat versucht, nichts komplett Neues hinzuzuerfinden. Aber die Drehbücher sind teilweise mutig und überraschend. Und das meine ich im positiven Sinn, denn erst durch das Unerwartete lohnt es sich doch, auch dieses Buch zu lesen und ermöglicht es, erneut herzhaft über die Anhalter-Reihe lachen zu können! Was vom Original abweicht, wird stets in den Fußnoten begründet.
Die Fußnoten sind ohnehin ein Punkt, der allein den Kauf des Buches schon rechtfertigt. Man erfährt lustige Anekdoten, interessante Hintergründe und jede Menge Informationen über die Produktion. Wer hätte denn zum Beispiel geahnt, dass der verstorbene Douglas Adams in der Tertiary Phase selbst Agrajag (eine seiner Lieblingsfiguren) spricht? Wie das möglich ist, steht im Buch. Und all die Informationen werden sehr unterhaltsam präsentiert! Ich glaube kaum, dass es einen Anhalterfan gibt, der sich dabei nicht amüsiert. Und wie schon im ersten Band sind die Regieanweisungen der Drehbücher ein herzhafter Bonus, den man bei den Hörspielen nicht bekommt!
Auch die Vorworte von Simon Jones, Bruce Hyman, Dirk Maggs und kurze Statements von den Darstellern sind informativ, respektvoll gegenüber Douglas Adams und gleichzeitig witzig.
Zum Abschluss wird im Buch begründet, warum „Mostly Harmless" nicht das definitive Ende des Anhalters war, sondern dass Adams in seinen Romanen geschickt einige Fährten gelegt hat, um die Geschichte problemlos wieder aufnehmen zu können. Als Bonusmaterial gibt es gleich mehrere Varianten davon, wie eine Fortsetzung als Hörspiel beginnen könnte.
Man bekommt also jede Menge geboten. Aber nicht nur quantitativ. Selbst als Anhalter-Fan fand ich die Drehbücher niemals langweilig. Wenn in Kürze die komplette BBC-Hörspielreihe als Box-Set herauskommt, werde ich wahrscheinlich erneut zuschlagen müssen...

A must for any hitchhikers fan. The greatest SiFi radio show ever I just can't fault it

What can say other than fantastic. I heard the first broadcast of the The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy in 1978 on the radio.. and was hooked then.. Douglas Admas' observation on us human thingies and our stange and weird behaviours is probably more spot on and full of wisdom  than any religious, theological or philosophical treatise ever written or handed down!! I think I've been reprogrammed to be like Colin - oh so blissfully happy!! And 42  really is the answer to life the Universe and Everything.... but what was the question again??

It isn't as good as if Doug had written it, but then it is slightly better than nothing.  We miss you Doug.

Excellent finale to a great series! The fifth part of the trilogy ends one of the best stories ever written and the BBC have excelled themselves bringing it to radio and this series of CDs. If I have one small niggle it is that the voices of the actors playing Ford Prefect and Arthur Dent are very similar and I sometimes found it hard to distinguish which one of them was speaking.
