excellent book

Required reading if you want to do what the title says. Broad and deep and easy to follow through a complex technical and emotional topic. Thank you Bruce!

Whumpf: the official technical term for the sound of a weak layer in the snowpack shattering, and also kind of how reading this book makes you feel

(5 stars for good backcountry karma)

Great book! The bible of avalanche references. Practical knowledge to supplement your next backcountry winter travel or avalanche safety course.

The title describes the book. The graphics, charts & drawings are engaging, and it's an interesting read, but the 'science' of avalanches is far from a real science. It seems to lack deeper logical nor does it converge on fundamental truth. It reads as a series of general guidelines and conditioned truths, but makes you realize how much is still unknown about snow science.

Tremper perfectly balanced readability with dispensing life saving knowledge in essentially the most comprehensive book on navigating avalanche terrain. While it's not a substitute for Avalanche courses and experience in the field, it's a book I read at least every other year as a refresher on various snow tests, decision making and human factors.

Must read for all my avalanche adjacent friends out there and if you are just curious about snow science this might be an excellent read as well!

Such an informative book. Was a little dense to get through, but that's definitely intentional from the author. As I ski more and get a better understanding of Avalanche terrain, I will be returning to this book to read again.

This book has helped me to realize the backcountry can be a very dangerous place for the uninformed and naive. After a close-call I experienced in the slackcountry or sidecountry of Powder Mountain in UT, I decided it's imperative that I educate myself about the dangers of avalanches and exploring the mountains. Just the first 3 chapters of this book have already proven to be invaluable. I look forward to continuing my education on snow and avalanche safety by finishing this book.
