This was a pretty good book, but it didn't contain anything that I considered "new" material. It reminded me of the Peter Drucker books I read in the 1980s and 90s. If you are unfamiliar with business management literature, this can be a good intro. There are many things pointed out that are often overlooked in business and will certainly be of help if you are in a management (supervisory or planning) position in a medium to large company. For me, however, this was old hat.

I enjoyed this book as it was exactly what I needed right now. There wasn't anything terribly new -- much of it is just adding new language and a twist to some of the same old ideas. But I liked the spin on the old ideas. And the authors seem to adore Jack Welch. So, now I am inspired to read a book on Jack Welch.

Nice sumarisation of the ideal functioning of a company. The real life comes often in more shades of gray, than the book is talking about, but the book aims to deliver the ideal point of view.
Recommended for everyone working in corporation, but don't be disillusioned about the real life :-), which many times work as the negative examples from this book.

Not a great book.
All through the book read so far, I was searching for new concepts. There is nothing new said in this book. Success stories are like text book reading. E.g. Mr XYZ followed execution rule A and he succeed; Mr. ABC did not follow rules and he failed. What about situations where new rules need to be define? Most of Case studies are relevant for top level of operation.

I don't think I can read this book beyond half way mark.

It is easy to get lost in the weeds of this book if your expertise dose not fall in the context of managing a large US corporation. I had a hard time translating much of it into my field of work. Still, there were helpful nuggets, applicable to any leader in any context. These insights made it worth struggling through some of the more detailed and less relevant sections. There were growth areas in my leadership style exposed by this book.

Granular book on how to get the job done and deliver results. Very helpful for managers figuring how to implement a strategy. There is so much good in this book but really, really needs to be updated. So as long as you can put up with listening to your grandfather peppering the conversation with war stories, you can mine this resource for really good tips and wisdom, from how and why managing the people process is most important to how you can run an effective meeting (excellent business hygiene and checklist mentality).

My take always:
Needed: accountability, clear goals, accurate methods to measure performance and the right rewards for people who perform.

Core: Strategy people operations

Get to the heart of an issue through persistent and constructive probing.

Have a contingency plan for the unexpected.

Increase quality and flow of information.

Why is our industry so complicated? Does it have to be? How can we simplify it?

Have clear goals and strive for simplicity--FOLLOW THROUGH !

We don't think ourselves into a new way of acting, we act ourselves into a new way of thinking.

If people believe they are in a mature industry with no growth prospects they won't spend time and energy looking for growth opportunities.

If they believe others who do less get the same rewards it drains their energy.

If you're staying the same you're falling behind.

I agree with the title, "the Discipline of Getting Things Done", because even though the concepts were explained with surprisingly less jargon than I anticipated, it was still a challenging read for me to initially complete. However, because the various concepts were so clearly explained , I think it'll be a great career reference text for me.
