Sometimes words come together in ways that twist knives you didn't know you still had in your gut.
Proulx achieves this with a stark economy (tautology almost, but I wanted both words) that leaves you both breathless and on the verge of hyperventilation.
It's been long since I had such a visceral reaction to the written word.
I wanted it to last longer. And at the same time, I can't see how it could have.
Exquisite!

Brokeback Mountain is such a short read that you can read it in one sitting. Despite its length though and how quickly you can get through it, there were many flaws about this short story that hindered me from really enjoying it.

I couldn't stand the writing style. Far too many run-on sentences that I found so distracting and annoying. Scenes seem to begin and end so quickly that it is as if it didn't happen at all. Though the characters are somewhat interesting, there is no depth...the dialogue is way too forced and corny...it's hard for me to care about characters that are hardly given any life and personality. The love affair between Jack and Ennis i think was better portrayed in the movie...in the short story, I didn't find it believable, touching, or endearing at all.

The story overall has a hasty feel and tone to it. I could maybe blame it on the length, because it is under 60 pages, but honestly, I don't think the author is that great of a writer. The plot is original but the way it's executed is lackluster and boring to say the least.

This is one of those cases where the movie is far better than the book. At least it was a very quick read...so it's not as if you'd be wasting that much time reading it. Still, nonetheless, I'd rather stick with the movie instead.

I picked this up at the library last night because it was a tiny book, perfect for today's lunch time read.

I'm ashamed to say that I attempted to watch the film, but fell asleep about 45 minutes in. Now that I've read this story, I'm going to revisit the film.

This is the first time I've read Annie Proulx. It is amazing how much story she covers in so few pages. Her spare prose, concise style and quiet intensity really worked for me.

An absolutely beautiful, heartbreaking love story! Makes me want to crack open a bottle of whiskey and roll a joint.

The book is better than the movie, but the actors are super than the words.

Masterful storytelling that I never want to read again.

The phonetic dialogue tripped me up at the beginning, but I adjusted. Might have been better if it could have insulated me emotionally. I was sure that a 10K-word short couldn't possibly gut me as badly as the movie did.

I was wrong.

Late to the party but I when I did get there I sure as heck enjoyed myself

This book was given to me by a friend who said I cant believe you have never read this or at least seen the movie. Well I hadn't and at 60 pages this short novela has a lot to say and really does pack quite a punch.

Originally published in The New Yorker in 1997 for which it won the National Magazine Award for fiction 1998.

In 1963 two young men Ennis del Mar and Jack Twish are hired for the summer to look after sheep at a seasonal grazing range on the fictional Brokeback mountain in Wyoming where they form a relationship that emotionally attaches them for the rest of their lives.

Terrific storytelling in so few pages and the emotion I felt while reading it really did surprise me. The author's writing and understanding of the characters really makes this story what it is, strong and sympathic characters make for great stories and I really found a lot of emotion in this little novel. A timeless story that that made me think, great character development and writing.

The one thing I did realise when finishing the novel is I DONT want to see the movie as I think the book works very well and while the movie may be great I dont want it to spoil my first impressions on reading this novel as even the actors playing the books characters are way too cute for the characters described in the book.

I really think a book group would get a great discussion from this one.

This book was chosen for me in the 'pick it for me challenge' in the m/m romance group here on goodreads. It's a classic (or should be), I saw the movie years ago, and I was amazed how short the book is.

This is one of the most well written stories I have ever read. In places, it is more like a sketch than a painting. And yet it describes the main characters and their awful dilemma and, ultimately, suffering in such clear pictures that it broke my heart all over again.

This is one of the few "tragedies" that gets 5 stars from me. It is an amazing book which should be required reading for everyone.

"I goddamn hate it that you're goin a drive away in the mornin and I'm goin back to work. But if you can't fix it you gotta stand it...."

The story of Jack & Ennis who met and loved on Brokeback Mountain is unutterably raw. Though a quick read coming in at around 55 pages, it certainly packs a punch.

It's a sparse tale. Minimalist. Kind of like their time together. Over in a rush, never enough. Sometimes only seeing each other every few years, each having their own family. But always on each other's minds.

"One thing never changed: the brilliant charge of their infrequent couplings was darkened by a sense of time flying, never enough time, never enough."

"I wish I knew how to quit you."

My heart ached for Jack & Ennis. Who has the right to question anyone's love?

The end of this book... I felt sadness for a life half lived. The cruelty of having to live a lie. But the reality being that at that time, men in the area even suspected of being gay met their untimely end with the help of a tyre iron.

This is definitely a story that will stay in my find for some time. It's just one of those that resonate long after the book has been closed.

JV's review caught my eye. Reading it made me wonder why I'd never read the book before (though I'd seen the movie long ago). I figured it would be a good change of pace to the usual bookclub pick. Please have a look at JV's words, they're beautiful, as they come from the heart

A cowboy story with superfluous descriptions of gunslingers and traditional masculine bravado has always been and still is very stifling, repellent and misleading to me. Lingering on this thought I started the book and to my surprise I loved it! Two men falling deeply in love with each other doomed in this homophobic world typifies the suggestion that love can exist in any form, against all odds. Now, for me what remained stifling in this book was the society’s powerful indictment of male love, in fear of which Jack & Ennis sailed in two boats all their lives until one drowned.

Once in love with the book I immediately decided to watch the movie which I found equally commendable and now I was in love with the two male actors. The cinematography, the picturesque view, the acting and the kiss between the two protagonists! Male protagonist!! Marvelous! How many people have the nerves to give such cinematic kissing scenes? I read somewhere the script ran seven years from door to door in search of actors who would agree to do such scenes. Again exemplifies the social orthodoxy. The film magnified my experience of reading this book by giving an articulate form to my imaginations.

n  Brokeback Mountainn is a luminous yet melancholy story of love and the loneliness love brings as a result of conservatism/homophobia.It is a romantic epic and an unforgettable affair!!

This novel is surprisingly short . . . which makes it difficult to rate the book unbiasedly :-/ I found myself replaying the (exceptional) movie in my mind the entire time.

This was the perfect book in the "to short" categorie! Sure it did packed a punch and in the short amount of pages it's was both romantic and heart wrenching. But my ebook was 60 pages and I was afraid I had picked up an abridged version but after looking at goodreads and seen that it's just 55 pages long makes me think otherwise. A very good short story/book but I wanted so much of the characters and writing. I might need to watch the movie instead but I'm a terrible movie watcher. Books are more my thing of entertainment
