My mind says that I should read Shakespeare, but my heart cringes and holds back. I know it is a left-over feeling from High School. I remember reading both Romeo and Juliet, and Macbeth. They were both so excruciatingly slow reading at the pace of class. It seems that we took weeks just to read one play. I remember falling asleep quite a bit.

Contrast that experience with today. Twelfth Night was a silly comedy. It was full of puns, dirty references, and disguised identities. I was able to read the play in one evening. Perhaps if I read a few more I can overcome my reticence to read Shakespeare.

Bu oyunda da komedi unsurları Shakespeare’in oyunlarında olduğu gibi, genelde yanlış anlaşılmalardan türüyor. Ülkemizde de İBB Şehir Tiyatroları kapsamında ilk temsili 21 Ekim 2015 günü yapılmış. Geçen aralık ayı itibari ile ise oyun tekrar sahnelenmeye başladı ve hiç vakit kaybetmeden önce İş Bankası Kültür Yayınları baskısından oyunun metnini alıp okudum; daha sonrasında ise bu yazıyı sıcağı sıcağına kaleme aldığım günden bir gün önce, yani 9 Ocak 2020 tarihinde oyunu izledim.

On İkinci Gece oyununun konusu oldukça karışık; gemi kazasından kurtulan Viola, aslında kurtulmuş olan ve kendisine çok benzeyen ağabeyi Sebastian’ın öldüğünü sanır ve onun kılığında, kurgusal bir dükalık olan Illyria Dükü Orsino’nun hizmetine girer ve ona âşık olur. Orsino ise kardeşinin ölümü için yasta olan Kontes Olivia’ya fena halde âşıktır ve hizmetine yeni girmiş olan Viola’yı – onu Cesario sanarak – Olivia’ya olan aşkını anlatması ve inandırması üzerine kontese yollar. Kontesin de erkek görünümündeki Viola’ya aşık olması ile elimizde karmakarışık, erkek kılığına girmiş bir kadın da içeren aşk üçgeni vardır artık.

One of my book resolutions this year is to read more classics, including some of Shakespeare's plays. Shockingly, I've only read a couple, but ironically I read Twelfth Night at the tender age of 14 as part of my year 9 English class. I wanted to see how much I remembered etc. Surprising, not much.

Basically Viola and her brother Sebastian are involved in a shipwreck, washing up on the shores of Illyria. Both think the other is dead, and Viola dresses up as a bloke to protect her honour or whatever. Hilarity ensures as there's a case of mistaken identity, and some bloke called Malvolio is tricked into thinking he's mental.

Sir Toby is awful. As is Antonio and Maria. Olivia is extremely gullible, and probably wishes by the end that she'd married Viola and not Sebastian. I know I would have, she's by far the best character of the bunch and has a way with words. As is The Fool, with his dry remarks and witty repartee.

Not my favourite, but it's alright. Props to this copy, which included a modern translation after the original text to help when I couldn't be bothered to think about what was being said. It stopped me from loosing track several times.

Twelfth night being the last comedy of William Shakespeare, is highly acclaimed and panned at equal measures. We come to peruse and praise his literary genius through his artistic handling of different themes packed in one play. On the surface, the play exhibits traces of mistaken identity, deception, Lovesickness, melancholy, desire and abundance, gender and sex, master and servant, but on the broader canvass, the colors are more vivid and glaring laden with undercurrent meanings of these themes.
Where, fools are philosophers and dukes are idiotic, where an effeminate pageboy of the duke is more appealing to countess than the duke himself, where drunken dumbheads are predators and sober generals forcefully proved crazy, and where woman when attired in men’s dress, are valued more. In such society, twelfth night is a penance to those who delight in it as comedy!!

2023 reread: Our cast is fantastic and I can't wait to get to work on this brilliant script. The pun on "understand" is still my favorite thing ever. Sir Toby and Maria are the embodiment of raucous fun, Feste has a razor wit, and Malvolio is overdramatic to the point of leaving us all sobbing from laughter. Viola is adorably earnest and Olivia so regal. Here I am four years later still shipping the hell out of Sebastian and Antonio.

Original review, January 2019: Excellent. And so punnily clever! I wasn't expecting that (not sure why - this is Shakespeare after all, he of the HILARIOUS Act I of Romeo & Juliet). I mean, he made a pun on the word "understand". Who does that?? Amazing.

The resolution in Act 5 was quickly and efficiently wrapped up. Sidenote: W Shakes seems to like resolving things with double weddings - didn't the same thing happen in Much Ado, among others?

And for being cast as the villain, I didn't see a whole lot of treachery in Malvolio. Guy just seemed to have different priorities than everyone else, which is clearly a reason to be made fun of tortured and shiz.

I definitely ship Sebastian/Antonio. Hopefully Olivia doesn't mind when Sebastian sneaks his boi into the house.

The Fool's wordplay and the wordplay in general were excellent. Good show, I say.

It's as if Shakespeare was so enamoured by Rosalind that he tried to create another version of her for this play. Viola too is a female who disguises herself as a man to achieve her ends. Gender disguise is a big part of the plot device as Shakespeare once again brings his wisdom to bear on sexual identity. There are other new versions of some his old characters here too. The drunkard Sir Tony Belch has a Falstaffian vibe. Antonio with his hopeless homoerotic yearnings mirrors Antonio in The Merchant of Venice. The fatuous self-admiring Count Orsino with his whiff of misogyny but eventual apotheosis is a familiar male peacock. The aspiring social climber Malvolio is a new character and the most complex. Shakespeare gets us to laugh at the sado-masochistic cruelty to which he is subjected. It's an uncomfortable experience as we're laughing at an act of bullying, discrimination, exclusion. Shakespeare turns us into a member of a mindless mob. Finally Feste is one of Shakespeare's best fools. This is a madcap play but rich in poetry and prophecy.

Shakespeare'in Hamlet, Machbet, Othello, Venedik Taciri, Romeo ve Juliet gibi eserlerini okuduktan sonra dilimize çevrilen diğer eserleri bence oldukça sönük kalıyor. Sanırım bundan sonra, okumadığım diğer eserlerini okumaya yeltenmeyeceğim. Zamanına göre evet çok değerli ve çığır açmış olabilir fakat günümüz için bence geçerli değil. 3. yıldızım da sadece Shakespeare olduğu için.

I read this all in one day, for school, and also because I was on a long car ride. Not to mention I really enjoy Shakespeare's plays, and this one was... just hilarious. Twins and the best love triangle I've ever read about (sort of like a love circle, to be honest). Definitely recommended!!!

The latest play from the little Litsy group I'm following - one act a week, so I tend to spend Sunday morning reading Shakespeare, a pleasant habit. This was good fun, and a lot of silliness. A comedy where Shakespeare pulled out humor in every which way, including endless innuendos, a brilliant and cruel practical joke, a lot of confusion with twins, eyes falling rapturously in love instantly (and then out of it), and a lot of very sharp wit from the fool and the ladies, one disguised as a man. The Fool explains the play best: "Look then to be well edified when the fool delivers the madman."

Shakespeare ve eserleri hakkında fazla söz söylemeye gerek yok sanırım. Belki ele aldığı çoğu konu farklı versiyonlarda defalarca karşımıza çıkarıldığından eserleri günümüz için fazla orijinal veya yaratıcı gelmiyor olabilir, ancak şimdiye kadarki (az sayıdaki) Sheakespeare okumalarımdan zevk aldım. Onikinci Gece'yi de aynı şekilde keyifle okudum. Eğlenceli bir oyun. Çeviriden şikayetim yok ancak orijinal dilinde okumak hoş bir deneyim olabilir.
