A good historical overview of not only The Oresteia but also theater in Ancient Greece.

همیشه دنبال چنین کتاب‌هایی درباره‌ی تراژدی‌های یونانی بودم و خب تا الان چیزی اون‌طور که دلم می‌خواست، جز در لکچر‌ها ندیده بودم و درباره‌ی اورستیا دقیقاً یکی از همون کتاب‌هاست. فصل اولش به ارتباط آتن دموکراتیک و تراژدی می‌پردازه. از پولیس، دیونیزیای بزرگ، تئاتر و دموکراسی آتنی می‌گه. تو فصل دوم، اورستیا به شکل موشکافانه و دقیقی بررسی ساختاری شده و واقعاً شگفت‌زده شده بودم از خوندن این فصل. سه تا ساختار روایی کلان تو اورستیا رو مطرح می‌کنه و از نحوه‌‌ای که آیسخولوس زبان رو به‌کار می‌گیره، با آوانوشت یونانی و ترجمه‌ی تکه‌هایی از متن حرف می‌زنه. و نهایتاً فصل سوم به تأثیر اورستیا بر متن‌ها و آدم‌های پس از خودش می‌پر‌دازه؛ مشخصاً الکترای سوفوکل و اوریپید، حلقه‌ی واگنر، حق مادری باخوفن و جنبش‌ زنان. در مجموع درخشان بود!

Solid introduction to the Oresteia. Goldhill provides a (very) little social context, and a nice run down of the plays' important themes. I think he could have provided more information on the background stories; there's not much here about what happens in the Iliad, or about Thyestes' Feast, or any of that stuff. But I guess, since you're reading a Goodreads review, you can use wikipedia to find out that stuff.

This is a study book about the Oresteia, about Aeschylus. It´s some kind of analysis of the Oresteia.
You will learn a lot about Gree culture of 5th century b.c.

I really liked it. Since I like to read and learn about anciennt Greece. It also helped me to undestand much better the beggining of tragedy.
