Unparalleled explanatory notes and introductory criticisms. It was worth risking a busted zipper from an overstuffed suitcase after a semester of study-abroad in London to take home.
Bought for a class my first year of university, and has since accompanied me all over the world. Wonderfully organised with all the bits you could possibly want included. The binding is coming off of mine but I think it's just a sign that it's well loved.
Yes, I actually read the WHOLE thing. I much prefer the comedies and tragedies to the histories. Some of the histories (e.g. King John) make for ROUGH reading. I guess they can't all be Henry the Fifth.
I bought this when I was taking a course with Stephen Greenblatt in college -- a course in which we were studying four of Shakespeare's plays in depth. This thing was, I don't know, $90 or something; buying each of the plays individually would have come to about $20 total; Greenblatt had just come out with this the previous year and wanted to sell copies; we all wound up buying the $90 version and lugging all 20 pounds of it to class each week. And he was so charmingly straightforward about the fact that his motivation was entirely monetary that you sort of forgot to be pissed and just grinned back at him. He was a cool guy.
I actually haven't read the entirety of this, but a good deal of the plays and sonnets. This is one of those books a fan of literature needs on their shelf. It's something you can always pick up and read a little something great.
I have marked this as "read." I wish there was a category called "mostly read" for anthologies like this. Anyhow, I "mostly read" it, and it's fantastic.
Although not identified as such in the Goodreads description, this is volume two of two volumes. It is one of the best editions of Shakespeare and is supplemented by a Digital Edition (the paperback provides a registration code for same).
